Our speaker next week is a Rotarian and Past President of the Dunedin North Club,
she has been a member for eighteen years
Janet Hewson a Canadian, is a retired nurse who has done at least two trips to Vanuatu with ROMAC.
This is a volunteer programme which qualified medical people undertake some amazing treatments for children who often would have very little future without treatment.
The tin which we hand round the tables each week will be counted up and you will be surprised at the sum of what's in that tin but is has been quite heavy. We should hold a sweep stake as to who can guess nearest the amount and the nearest/winner may like to round it up to a significant and generous donation to ROMAC.
Right now, around 88 million people around the world have been made homeless by natural disaster and conflict and this provides perfect conditions for Covid-19 (amongst other disease) to spread rapidly. Why do they still need our support? Because Shelter is more than just a roof – it is a home, It is the foundation for life, for families, for communities, for peace. ShelterBox responds 365 days a year.
As a Rotary Club we can continue to help make it possible for Shelterbox to ensure that no family is left without shelter. It was a major Mosgiel Club project for many years.
DG Visit
It was a pleasure to have Dylan Murray visit and talk to us about the possible future for Rotary. I liked his idea about using ZOOM or Skype to communicate with other people of similar interest. Guest speakers could talk to us from all parts of the world. The highlight must go to the awarding of PHF+2 to Merv and a PHF+1 to Jill Clearwater for their outstanding work for District.
Rotary Club of Oamaru
On Saturday Gay and I travelled up to Oamaru for the day, exploring different parts of the community. Yes, I found a great place for a coffee - The Roost! We loved the Heritage Centre. While having a coffee at The Fishwife café at Moeraki Village I googled to find out what Rotary clubs are in Oamaru and what are they famous for. The Rotary Club of Oamaru is one of the oldest clubs in New Zealand - chartered in 1925. Next thing I learnt was the club is involved with helping the Waitaki Community Garden to make Oamaru the capital city of New Zealand for the Monarch butterfly. They are helping to plant over 1000 swan plants and nectar plants.
I wish the Oamaru Cub all the best for their project.
