The Rotary Club of Twinsburg remembers Pearl Harbor

Posted on Dec. 07, 2022
Today marks the 81st anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.  We remember the men and women to set aside their own lives in defense of their country.  Please take some time to reflect on dangers that we ask our members in the military to endure to keep our country safe and free.  Do not be shy to tell a veteran or active duty service or safety force member what their service to our country and community means to you.  Thank you to the members of the armed forces, safety forces and veterans corp for your service to our great land.

Responding to the Crisis in Ukraine

From Rotary International: Help for those displaced by the war in Ukraine

As one of the world’s largest humanitarian organizations, Rotary has made peace the cornerstone of our global mission. We are deeply concerned about the Ukraine crisis and need your help.

Rotary is made up of people of action, especially in difficult times. In response to the deepening refugee crisis, The Rotary Foundation Trustees have decided to prioritize contributions made to the Disaster Response Fund until 30 April 2022 to support disaster response grants for districts affected by these events. These expedited disaster response grants can be used to supply water, food, medicine, shelter, and clothing.

Half a million people have fled Ukraine and are in dire need of emergency aid. The United Nations estimates that number of refugees could grow to as many as 5 million people displaced. Rotary clubs in Europe and around the world have stepped up their relief work, some working on the ground to help displaced families.

With your donation to our Disaster Response Fund, we can support communities and help rebuild lives during this tragic time.

Samuel Bissell School Earns Blue Ribbon Award

Posted on Oct. 05, 2016
The Samuel Bissell School in Twinsburg was recognized as a Blue Ribbon School by the US Department of Education.  Only 329 schools in the USA, 6 in Ohio, earned this recognition.  Club President Philip Weiss issued a proclamation from the Rotary Club of Twinsburg congratulating the administration, staff, students and parents of the school.  This is another indication of the caliber of the school system that we have in Twinsburg.  Again, congratulations to all who were instrumental in earning this recognition.

Rotary International Theme for 2016-17

Rotary’s founder, Paul Harris, believed that serving humanity is “the most worthwhile thing a person can do,” RI President-elect John F. Germ said, and that being a part of Rotary is a “great opportunity” to make that happen.

Germ unveiled the 2016-17 presidential theme, Rotary Serving Humanity, to incoming district governors on 18 January at the International Assembly in San Diego, California, USA.

“I believe everyone recognizes the opportunity to serve Rotary for what it truly is: not a small opportunity, but a great one; an opportunity of a lifetime to change the world for the better, forever through Rotary’s service to humanity,” said Germ.

May is ...

Posted on Apr. 30, 2015
story thumbnail

May does not have a designated theme in the Rotary calendar.  We should therefore focus our attention to Club Service this month.

Club service is vital to a club's existence and effectiveness.  If you have not performed club service recently, please consider helping in one of the committees or project/event teams.  Many of the tasks are not that time consuming, but are valuable to our clubs mission and programs.  Ask any of the club officers or committee chairs if there is something you can do to help.  The more people that help in the operations of our club, the less work it is on each individual.

Participate in the club's programs.  You could talk about your vocation and some of the issues that are being faced in it.  There could be some vocational, business, legal or financial issues the would be of interest to the club.  Maybe there is a client and customer that you work with that would be willing to share their story.  If there is a topic about Rotary that we have not heard about for a while that you are knowledgeable about, give a talk on it to the club.  Give your subject or contact information to the Program Chair, so it can be put on the speaker calendar.

The Rotarian - May 2015

The Rotarian Conversation: Jeff Bridges & Billy Shore

Thirty years ago, Billy Shore sat in bumper-to-bumper traffic in Washington, D.C., honking his horn. Shore, a young political operative, was in a hurry to save, or at least improve, the world. He hoped to help his boss, the idealistic Colorado senator Gary Hart, become the next president. His mission would fizzle when the press caught Hart monkeying around extramaritally, but that traffic jam helped improve the world anyway.

While stuck on the road, Shore glanced at that day’s Washington Post. A front-page story told of a famine in Africa and how it had inspired Band Aid, a supergroup of pop stars, to record “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” Eventually, that song would raise $24 million for famine relief and the stars would move on, taking the world’s spotlight with them. By the time Shore finished the article, however, he would be dedicated to blowing the horn on hunger.

Rotary International Theme for 2015-16

Posted by Philip Weiss on Jan. 28, 2015
story thumbnail
Rotary International President-elect K.R. “Ravi” Ravindran asked Rotary members to use their talents, expertise, and leadership to transform the lives of others when he announced his theme for the 2015-16 year, Be a Gift to the World, during the International Assembly in San Diego, California, USA.

Rotary is a way to bring out the best part of ourselves, and let it guide our lives. Too often, we spend our days in pursuit of the goals that should matter least. We focus our attention on our own achievements and our own gain; we devote endless energy to the accumulation of material things. Yet at the end of our lives, no one will remember us for the cars we drove, the clothes we wore, the titles we carried, or the offices we sat in. We will not be admired for the efforts we poured into making our own lives richer or our own status higher. In the end, our worth will be measured not by how much we acquired, but by how much we gave away. Will we avert our eyes from suffering, or will we alleviate it? Will we speak words of compassion, or will we act on them? Will we be content only to take from the world — or will we give to it?

In the 2015-16 Rotary year, our theme will be
Be a Gift to the World.

October is Vocational Service Month

Vocational Service focuses on:

  • Adherence to and promotion of the highest ethical standards in all occupations, including fair treatment of employers, employees, associates, competitors, and the public.
  • The recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, not just those that are pursued by Rotarians.
  • The contribution of your vocational talents to solving the problems of society and meeting the needs of the community.

During October, Rotarians are encouraged to focus on this important avenue of Rotary service. Discussions on vocational service can lead to projects that not only develop the ethical consciousness and vocational skills of Rotarians but also the talents within their communities. Vocational Service Month is an opportunity to begin year-long vocational service activities, ranging from Rotary discussions to awards to community projects.  The recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, not just those that are pursued by Rotarians.  The contribution of your vocational talents to solving the problems of society and meeting the needs of the community.

The Children of the Dumps Project

Posted by Philip Weiss on Jun. 15, 2014

Children of the Dump - Chinandega, Nicaragua

Education, meals, clean water, medical care, vocational training, housing & sustained development

In 1997, D5890 Rotarians found 800 children were eating food from the city dump in Chinandega, Nicaragua. These children & their displaced families were economic victims from not only a change in national government but also from the devastation of a hurricane. A small school was built, & 90 children attended & received one meal a day. Thanks to Rotary, there are elementary schools, a secondary school, and high school. Over 1700 children attend the school & receive nourishing meals and medical care. Rotarians in many Rotary Districts across the United States have adopted the "Children of the Dump" as their club’s international project. TRF grants have helped build: Betania Trade School (vocational training); San Martin Hospital; Refugio Belen (shelter for pregnant women); Santa Lucia School for the Blind; 500 homes with micro-farms to grow crops for their family and to sell at the market. The "cycle of poverty" is being broken.

The Rotary Club of Twinsburg supports this project by collecting funds for the Shoebox Project.  For $25, you can purchase a shoebox filled with school supplies, t-shirts, sandals, underwear, toys, soap, toothbrushes, etc., to encourage the children in this dump to attend school and break the poverty cycle.  Cindy Leonard is collecting donations for this project and will be send the donation to the project on our club's behalf.  Please be as generous as you can to help these children out of a bad situation.

On Wednesday, February 27, 2013, the Rotary Club of Twinsburg held its annual 4-Way Test Speech Contest.  Four students arrived to complete for the cash prizes and the chance to compete at the district level.  Four students came to deliver speeches on current issues and applying the Rotary 4-Way Test to determine it's ethical credibility.  Subjects included bullying in school, school shootings, polio eradication in the world and education reform.  The speeches were very interesting and thought provoking.  At the end of the evening, the judges rated Bob Liu's speech the best of the four speeches.

Bob Liu is a senior at Twinsburg High School.  Bob is also Senior captain of football team, Class president, Founder of the iLead student leadership group, and Member of National Honor Society.  Bob plans on attending Washington University in St. Louis, MO majoring in Finance and playing on the football team.

On Saturday, March 23, at Aurora High School, Bob will be representing Twinsburg at the District 6630 4-Way Speech Contest.  Bob will be competing against winners from Northeast Ohio to win the top prize at the district level.  The District 6630 contest offers the largest prizes than most district level contests.

Let's support Bob at the district contest by attending the contest.  You will hear some superb speeches.
