This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about Ambassadorial Scholarships.

Former Ambassadorial Scholar and Youth Exchange student Ryan Carrier says: "You can go on a trip somewhere, but that‘s not the same thing as living in a place and getting to know the people, seeing their perspectives, and gaining their trust and really being welcomed in a deeper way. It gave me a lot more confidence to do something bigger with my life. If I hadn‘t had both of those helping hands along the way from Rotary — the exchange program and the Ambassadorial Scholarship — I wouldn‘t have had the opportunities that I have now." Carrier is now working as a legal officer for the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia.

Object of Rotary

In some areas of the world, weekly Rotary club meetings begin with all members standing and reciting the Object of Rotary. This statement, which comes from the constitution of Rotary, is frequently seen on a wall plaque in Rotarians’ offices or places of business.

The Object of Rotary is “to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise.” The statement then lists four areas by which this “ideal of service” is fostered: through the development of acquaintance as the opportunity for service; the promotion of high ethical standards in business and professions; through service in one’s personal, business, and community life; and the advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace.

Object of Rotary has not always been expressed in this manner. The original constitution of 1906 had three objects: promotion of business interests, promotion of good fellowship, and the advancement of the best interests of the community. By 1910, Rotary had five objects as increased emphasis was given to expanding Rotary. By 1915, there were six objects. In 1918, the objects were rewritten again and reduced to four. Four years later, they had again grown to six and were revised again in 1927.

Finally, at the 1935 Mexico City convention, the six objects were restated and reduced to four. The last major change came in 1951 when the objects were streamlined and changed to a single object, which has four parts.

Attracting Members to Rotary

One of the most common goals amongst Rotary clubs around the world have been related to increasing membership, attracting younger members and promoting the Rotary brand to members of the community.

No doubt this is a difficult task. How do we promote Rotary to the younger generation and get them interested in the work our club does when in fact, the majority of our younger generation is not even slightly aware of what Rotary is. While a lot has to do with publicity, the fact of the matter is that there a lot of changes that clubs can implement to develop interest levels among the youth.

1) Partner with a local Rotaract Club
2) Cater to your Target Market
3) Web Presence
4) Network

Rotary was approached by Jacque Thompson who is the coordinator of Market on the Square and we were asked if we would like to partner on Saturday, Sept. 9 from 10:00am-4:00pm for the Market on the Square and help collect items for donation to send to Houston after hurricane Harvey devastated Texas.

Jacque and her group will take care of all the shipping, we were just asked to help the day of to collect items. Kathy and I agreed that is a great cause for Rotary to be involved in. There is no cost, just volunteer time. We will have a Rotary tent set up on the 9th to help collect items. Please let Kathy or Abby know if you would like to help volunteer.

In 2017-18, we’ll answer the question “What is Rotary?” with RI President-elect Ian H.S. Riseley’s theme, Rotary: Making a Difference. “Whether we’re building a new playground or a new school, improving medical care or sanitation, training conflict mediators or midwives, we know that the work we do will change people’s lives — in ways large and small — for the better.”

The Samuel Bissell School in Twinsburg was recognized as a Blue Ribbon School by the US Department of Education.  Only 329 schools in the USA, 6 in Ohio, earned this recognition.  Club President Philip Weiss issued a proclamation from the Rotary Club of Twinsburg congratulating the administration, staff, students and parents of the school.  This is another indication of the caliber of the school system that we have in Twinsburg.  Again, congratulations to all who were instrumental in earning this recognition.

Rotary’s founder, Paul Harris, believed that serving humanity is “the most worthwhile thing a person can do,” RI President-elect John F. Germ said, and that being a part of Rotary is a “great opportunity” to make that happen.

Germ unveiled the 2016-17 presidential theme, Rotary Serving Humanity, to incoming district governors on 18 January at the International Assembly in San Diego, California, USA.

“I believe everyone recognizes the opportunity to serve Rotary for what it truly is: not a small opportunity, but a great one; an opportunity of a lifetime to change the world for the better, forever through Rotary’s service to humanity,” said Germ.

May does not have a designated theme in the Rotary calendar.  We should therefore focus our attention to Club Service this month.

Club service is vital to a club's existence and effectiveness.  If you have not performed club service recently, please consider helping in one of the committees or project/event teams.  Many of the tasks are not that time consuming, but are valuable to our clubs mission and programs.  Ask any of the club officers or committee chairs if there is something you can do to help.  The more people that help in the operations of our club, the less work it is on each individual.

Participate in the club's programs.  You could talk about your vocation and some of the issues that are being faced in it.  There could be some vocational, business, legal or financial issues the would be of interest to the club.  Maybe there is a client and customer that you work with that would be willing to share their story.  If there is a topic about Rotary that we have not heard about for a while that you are knowledgeable about, give a talk on it to the club.  Give your subject or contact information to the Program Chair, so it can be put on the speaker calendar.

The Rotarian Conversation: Jeff Bridges & Billy Shore

Thirty years ago, Billy Shore sat in bumper-to-bumper traffic in Washington, D.C., honking his horn. Shore, a young political operative, was in a hurry to save, or at least improve, the world. He hoped to help his boss, the idealistic Colorado senator Gary Hart, become the next president. His mission would fizzle when the press caught Hart monkeying around extramaritally, but that traffic jam helped improve the world anyway.

While stuck on the road, Shore glanced at that day’s Washington Post. A front-page story told of a famine in Africa and how it had inspired Band Aid, a supergroup of pop stars, to record “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” Eventually, that song would raise $24 million for famine relief and the stars would move on, taking the world’s spotlight with them. By the time Shore finished the article, however, he would be dedicated to blowing the horn on hunger.

Rotary International President-elect K.R. “Ravi” Ravindran asked Rotary members to use their talents, expertise, and leadership to transform the lives of others when he announced his theme for the 2015-16 year, Be a Gift to the World, during the International Assembly in San Diego, California, USA.

Rotary is a way to bring out the best part of ourselves, and let it guide our lives. Too often, we spend our days in pursuit of the goals that should matter least. We focus our attention on our own achievements and our own gain; we devote endless energy to the accumulation of material things. Yet at the end of our lives, no one will remember us for the cars we drove, the clothes we wore, the titles we carried, or the offices we sat in. We will not be admired for the efforts we poured into making our own lives richer or our own status higher. In the end, our worth will be measured not by how much we acquired, but by how much we gave away. Will we avert our eyes from suffering, or will we alleviate it? Will we speak words of compassion, or will we act on them? Will we be content only to take from the world — or will we give to it?

In the 2015-16 Rotary year, our theme will be
Be a Gift to the World.

Celebrate Rotary Awareness Month by training members on Rotary history, programs, or how to raise awareness of your club’s projects among your community. Every Rotarian has a Rotary story that can be educational and inspiring. Vocational Service focuses on:

  • Adherence to and promotion of the highest ethical standards in all occupations, including fair treatment of employers, employees, associates, competitors, and the public.
  • The recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, not just those that are pursued by Rotarians.
  • The contribution of your vocational talents to solving the problems of society and meeting the needs of the community.

During October, Rotarians are encouraged to focus on this important avenue of Rotary service. Discussions on vocational service can lead to projects that not only develop the ethical consciousness and vocational skills of Rotarians but also the talents within their communities. Vocational Service Month is an opportunity to begin year-long vocational service activities, ranging from Rotary discussions to awards to community projects.  The recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, not just those that are pursued by Rotarians.  The contribution of your vocational talents to solving the problems of society and meeting the needs of the community.

Children of the Dump - Chinandega, Nicaragua

Education, meals, clean water, medical care, vocational training, housing & sustained development

In 1997, D5890 Rotarians found 800 children were eating food from the city dump in Chinandega, Nicaragua. These children & their displaced families were economic victims from not only a change in national government but also from the devastation of a hurricane. A small school was built, & 90 children attended & received one meal a day. Thanks to Rotary, there are elementary schools, a secondary school, and high school. Over 1700 children attend the school & receive nourishing meals and medical care. Rotarians in many Rotary Districts across the United States have adopted the "Children of the Dump" as their club’s international project. TRF grants have helped build: Betania Trade School (vocational training); San Martin Hospital; Refugio Belen (shelter for pregnant women); Santa Lucia School for the Blind; 500 homes with micro-farms to grow crops for their family and to sell at the market. The "cycle of poverty" is being broken.

The Rotary Club of Twinsburg supports this project by collecting funds for the Shoebox Project.  For $25, you can purchase a shoebox filled with school supplies, t-shirts, sandals, underwear, toys, soap, toothbrushes, etc., to encourage the children in this dump to attend school and break the poverty cycle.  Cindy Leonard is collecting donations for this project and will be send the donation to the project on our club's behalf.  Please be as generous as you can to help these children out of a bad situation.

On Wednesday, February 27, 2013, the Rotary Club of Twinsburg held its annual 4-Way Test Speech Contest.  Four students arrived to complete for the cash prizes and the chance to compete at the district level.  Four students came to deliver speeches on current issues and applying the Rotary 4-Way Test to determine it's ethical credibility.  Subjects included bullying in school, school shootings, polio eradication in the world and education reform.  The speeches were very interesting and thought provoking.  At the end of the evening, the judges rated Bob Liu's speech the best of the four speeches.

Bob Liu is a senior at Twinsburg High School.  Bob is also Senior captain of football team, Class president, Founder of the iLead student leadership group, and Member of National Honor Society.  Bob plans on attending Washington University in St. Louis, MO majoring in Finance and playing on the football team.

On Saturday, March 23, at Aurora High School, Bob will be representing Twinsburg at the District 6630 4-Way Speech Contest.  Bob will be competing against winners from Northeast Ohio to win the top prize at the district level.  The District 6630 contest offers the largest prizes than most district level contests.

Let's support Bob at the district contest by attending the contest.  You will hear some superb speeches.

To: 2012-13 district committee chairs and executive secretaries; club president, secretary, executive secretary, treasurer, foundation chair, and membership chair

December 2012

Dear 2012-13 district/club leader,

Since Rotary Club Central was launched in July, thousands of clubs have used it to track their goals. New features and enhanced functionality have now been added!

Service Project and Activities Goal
Within the Service tab, club leaders can now set a goal and track achievements for the projects and activities the club plans to do over the course of the year. Clubs can include details about each project and activity to improve planning for the future.

Public Relations Goal
Within the Your Club tab, club leaders can now set a goal and track achievements for the public relations efforts their club plans to do over the course of the year.

Club Group View
This view allows assistant governors to see a summary of the goals and achievements for the clubs they are assigned. Club groups are created and assigned by district governors.

Club Snapshot
In the coming weeks, the Rotary Club Central home page will provide each club member with an overview of the club. It will show club information, such as meeting location and number of members, as well as the club’s progress toward its goals for the year, all at a glance.

We encourage you to continue giving us feedback on your experience with Rotary Club Central. Your responses will help us improve the tool for Rotarians worldwide.
If you have questions, email us or contact your Club and District Support representative.

Regards,

John Hewko

Not only was this a GSE Visit, but also a cluster event.  All of the clubs in our cluster were represented at this meeting.  Thank you to all the members of our cluster who participated.  Be on the lookout for more cluster events in the future.  It's a great way to meet old and new Rotary friends and build a network for future service projects.

A joint meeting with RC Nordonia was held on Tuesday, Oct 5 at 12 pm.  Members of the RC Nordonia Hills and RC Twinsburg meet for an hour of food and fellowship.  We heard from Sondra Miller from the Cleveland Rape Crisis Center on some of the options that rape survivors have to overcome their ordeal and move on in life.  Sondra had a unique way of taking an unpleasant subject and making it understandable and informative.  We had a great opportunity to exchange ideas and ways of doing things, and look forward to more joint efforts with RC Nordonia Hills.

On September 15, 2010, Gary Sorace was inducted into the Rotary Club of Twinsburg.  The meeting was well attended including our AG Marj Ginther, some prosective members and some guests.  Gary will make a fine asset to our membership.  We look forward to Gary working with us on our many service projects and fund raisers as we do the work of Rotary.  Congratulations, Gary, on joining our club.

Throught member donations and a 50% match by the club, a donation of $525 was sent to the Shoeboxes for the Children of the Dump project.  That was enough for at least 17 shoeboxes filled with flip flops, school supplies and a few toys.  Seventeen children of the dump will receive this opportunity to break out of a unending spiral in poverty.

The last Rock the Park Concert was an enormous success.  Thank you to all the Rotarians and volunteers who helped us.  We succeeded in beating the goal we set for the 4 concerts by about 65%.
