Rotarian Larry McGuinness presents 30 X $25 gift cards from the Otter Co-Op and 30 X $25 gift cards from the Save-On Foods to Mary Van Zuuk, Manager Aldergrove Food Bank and volunteer Tannis Percival.
As part of our efforts to help people in need during the COVIT-19 pandemic crisis, we are happy to be able to partner with the Aldergrove Food Bank to provide grocery gift cards to local families experiencing additional hardships during this challenging time.
The dollar value of these cards, $1,500.00, represents a portion of a donation that The Rotary Club of Aldergrove is making to the Aldergrove Food Bank. The rest will be available in a few weeks.
These cards are part of a matching grant that we applied for and were granted from the Rotary International District 5050 Special Fund.

RibFest 2020 Cancelled

It was with regret that the RibFest Langley Organizing Committee voted to cancel RibFest 2020 due to concerns related to the COVID-19        pandemic. Stating that it was inappropriate at this time to ask RibFest sponsors to confirm their financial support, Jeff Morfitt, who chaired the  successful entry-free family event for its first two years, said the other consideration for cancellation was the uncertainty that guests would feel  comfortable attending the crowded venue at this time.
In spite of the loss of anticipated revenue from RibFest 2020 , (last year RibFest raised $150,000 to support local projects,) RibFest's continued support in local communities this year includes providing financial assistance to help keep the Starfish Backpack programs operational, donating to the new Langley Hospice, and giving 3,400 pairs of latex gloves to Inclusion Langley and Fraser Health.
Organizers have reached out to sponsors, suppliers, entertainers, ribbers and volunteers with this unfortunate news, offering thanks for their past involvement and best wishes that they continue to be safe.  Jeff Morfitt confirmed that RibFest Langley 2021 is on the drawing boards, tentatively set for August 13-15, 2021, and said he is looking forward to re-kindling RibFest's partnerships with so many excellent organizations and people.

Starfish Continues

In spite of the fact that the schools are closed and Aldergrove Starfish students can't pick up their backpacks of nutritious food for the weekend every Friday, the Program continues -- just in a different way.  The Aldergrove Rotary Club has donated $8,000. to the Langley School District Foundation, whose executive director Susan Cairns is coordinating a gift card program to address the ongoing need.  Starfish families will receive $50 in gift cards to Save-On Foods and Otter Co-op each week until the end of school closure, possibly til the end of the school year.
"We are grateful to the many donors who have supported this Program over the past five years and whose generous donations have made it possible for us to continue helping the Starfish families during the many challenges brought about by COVID-19," said Charlie Fox, the club's Starfish coordinator.  Donations can be made online at starfishpack.com by clicking the "donate" button and selecting "Aldergrove."

Dental hygiene packages from Dr. Vohra’s Aldergrove Family and Cosmetic Dentistry office are now being included in the Starfish Backpacks provided to Aldergrove students.

Fifty backpacks currently provide weekend food for hungry kids in three Aldergrove schools: Parkside and Shortreed elementary schools and Betty Gilbert middle school.

The Starfish program is supported by donors who provide funds and goods to the Aldergrove Rotary Club.

Aldergrove Rotarians founded it two years ago, and continue to operate and organize teams of volunteers for the Starfish Backpacks.

This program will be expanded to North Otter Elementary School this year. An additional ten Starfish Backpacks are being funded, with help from the Jazz Airline Pilots Association.

Starfish Pasta Party a Great Success

Starfish Pasta Party a Great Success
On November 28, 2015 the Aldergrove Rotary Club’s Starfish Pasta Party celebrated the generosity of local individuals and businesses who have supported the Aldergrove Starfish Backpack Program to date.  Thanks to their donations, the Aldergrove Starfish Backpack Program is able to provide food for 50 hungry kids in three local schools with weekend food for the current September-to- June school year. At the Pasta Party over 100 people paid $20.00 each for a delicious Italian meal that was generously provided and prepared by Carlo Bonetti, owner of Bonetti Meats. Along with even more individual donations, silent and live auction activities added to the evening’s proceeds (and fun). At time of writing, the total income from the pasta party is $6,000.00 and climbing.  Proceeds will be used to support hungry kids during the 2016-2017 school year. The cost to provide a Starfish Backpack full of weekend food for one child for one school year is $525.00. For more information on the Starfish Backpack Program and for details on how you can help feed hungry kids on weekends, visit www.aldergrovestarfish.ca
