Thanks to Dr. Lana Vohra - Aldergrove Smiles, students receiving the first Starfish Backpack of the new school year went home with gift bags of new toothbrushes and toothpaste. The hairdressing students from Aldergrove Secondary School were back on the job in September, volunteering to fill the 70 backpacks needed by Aldergrove families in need this school year.

Rotary's First Woman President Elected

Rotary International Elects Canadian Rotarian Jennifer Jones
First Woman President in History!

Jennifer is the Founder and President of Media Street Productions Inc., a 25-year-old, award-winning media company in Windsor, Ontario. She is a proud member of the Rotary Club of Windsor-Roseland.

Her talents have strengthened Rotary reach and impact, through many roles including as Trustee of the Rotary Foundation, RI Vice President, and co-chair of the End Polio Now: Make History Today campaign, raising funds alongside Bill and Melinda Gates and their Foundation.

Jennifer is a leader in cultivating “experiential fundraising” opportunities such as Rotary’s Polio Golf Day with Jack Nicklaus in Jupiter, Florida, USA, which raised over $5.25 million for polio eradication in one day, and the innovative, virtual COVID-19 #RotaryResponds event that raised money for COVID-19 relief projects and showcased Rotary’s response across the globe.

Working alongside political figures, celebrities and global leaders, she uses her voice to raise awareness and hundreds of millions of dollars to eradicate disease, support peace and provide clean water and sanitation in developing areas of the world. Her skill as an expert storyteller inspires hope and promise and motivates people to take action.

She has received many honors and recognitions including Rotary’s Service above Self Award and the Citation for Meritorious Service, the YMCA Peace Medallion, the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal, and Wayne State University’s Peacemaker of the Year Award – a first for a Canadian.

Jennifer is married to Rotarian Nick Krayacich, a local family physician. They share a love for many activities including travel, cycling, golf and relaxing at their family cottage; and they share a thirst for adventure, which has included cresting the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa.

Garden Boxes for Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels is over the moon at the prospect of being able to harvest fresh home-grown veggies right at their new location, the site of the former Milsean Shoppe on 272nd Street. Members of Aldergrove Rotary Club arranged the work parties that saw Meals on Wheels’ front entrance transformed into an array of garden boxes designed to add delicious fresh produce to the meals their kitchen prepares.

Rushing to get planted in time for this summer’s season, Rotary volunteers pitched in to make this happen. First, the site was prepared with the expertise of Jason Froese’s prowess at the controls of his mini-excavator, and Robby Robinson who contributed a load of crushed gravel to level the area.

Three SASSY Winners Visit

SASSY (Service Above Self Student Youth) is a Program that recognizes and celebrates the incredible Youth in the Langley community. SASSY seeks to reward Langley students who have excelled in demonstrating outstanding leadership skills in school and/or the community. A joint venture of the four Rotary Clubs in Langley, the SASSY Program has awarded $87,000.00 in bursaries to deserving Langley students since its inception six years ago. This year, 37 exceptional young people applied for the honour of being SASSY recipients.

On Friday May 27th, the club welcomed three of this year's SASSY Award Winners who described their SASSY experience, telling us of their leadership activities in the community and in their schools. Our guest speakers (L-R) were: Cassidy Buchanan, an Aldergrove resident attending the Brookswoods Soccer Academy;  Evan Dyce also an Aldergrove resident, who is attending ACSS, and  Daniel Lee from Walnut Grove

It was a pleasure to meet three such accomplished young people with such promising futures.

Again this year, a few keen honorary and club members gathered early on a Sunday morning to install then remove the festive Christmas lights that brighten up Aldergrove's main street every December.

A real team effort, our thanks go to the Township of Langley Fire Department for the traffic control, Asplundh’s Tree Service who provide the bucket truck, and Gus for his pick up and trailer. Oh yes - and JD Farms for storing the lights.

Gold Medal Olympian Speaks to Rotary

Gold Medal Olympian Lisa Roman,  a member of Team Canada's Women's Eight Rowing team at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, charmed and delighted Aldergrove Rotary members with her 50-minute address describing her eleven year run up to the Gold Medal podium moment at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. No stranger to competition, Lisa, who stands just under six feet tall has always had to overcome the fact that she was relatively short to be a rower. But she hasn’t let that deter her from her Olympic dream that was sparked when she made the national U23 team and won gold with the eight at the 2011 U23 World Championships.

RibFest 2020 Cancelled

It was with regret that the RibFest Langley Organizing Committee voted to cancel RibFest 2020 due to concerns related to the COVID-19        pandemic. Stating that it was inappropriate at this time to ask RibFest sponsors to confirm their financial support, Jeff Morfitt, who chaired the  successful entry-free family event for its first two years, said the other consideration for cancellation was the uncertainty that guests would feel  comfortable attending the crowded venue at this time.
In spite of the loss of anticipated revenue from RibFest 2020 , (last year RibFest raised $150,000 to support local projects,) RibFest's continued support in local communities this year includes providing financial assistance to help keep the Starfish Backpack programs operational, donating to the new Langley Hospice, and giving 3,400 pairs of latex gloves to Inclusion Langley and Fraser Health.

Organizers have reached out to sponsors, suppliers, entertainers, ribbers and volunteers with this unfortunate news, offering thanks for their past involvement and best wishes that they continue to be safe.  Jeff Morfitt confirmed that RibFest Langley 2021 is on the drawing boards, tentatively set for August 13-15, 2021, and said he is looking forward to re-kindling RibFest's partnerships with so many excellent organizations and people.

Starfish Continues

In spite of the fact that the schools are closed and Aldergrove Starfish students can't pick up their backpacks of nutritious food for the weekend every Friday, the Program continues -- just in a different way.  The Aldergrove Rotary Club has donated $8,000. to the Langley School District Foundation, whose executive director Susan Cairns is coordinating a gift card program to address the ongoing need.  Starfish families will receive $50 in gift cards to Save-On Foods and Otter Co-op each week until the end of school closure, possibly til the end of the school year.
"We are grateful to the many donors who have supported this Program over the past five years and whose generous donations have made it possible for us to continue helping the Starfish families during the many challenges brought about by COVID-19," said Charlie Fox, the club's Starfish coordinator.  Donations can be made online at starfishpack.com by clicking the "donate" button and selecting "Aldergrove."

Starfish Pasta Party a Great Success

Starfish Pasta Party a Great Success

On November 28, 2015 the Aldergrove Rotary Club’s Starfish Pasta Party celebrated the generosity of local individuals and businesses who have supported the Aldergrove Starfish Backpack Program to date.  Thanks to their donations, the Aldergrove Starfish Backpack Program is able to provide food for 50 hungry kids in three local schools with weekend food for the current September-to- June school year. At the Pasta Party over 100 people paid $20.00 each for a delicious Italian meal that was generously provided and prepared by Carlo Bonetti, owner of Bonetti Meats. Along with even more individual donations, silent and live auction activities added to the evening’s proceeds (and fun). At time of writing, the total income from the pasta party is $6,000.00 and climbing.  Proceeds will be used to support hungry kids during the 2016-2017 school year. The cost to provide a Starfish Backpack full of weekend food for one child for one school year is $525.00.
