he is installed as President in July. We had 10 members and three
potential new members in attendance. The Rotary Room is a wonderful

New Logo and Theme

The new Rotary year began July 1st with Gordon McInally from Scotland as our new President.   He mas been married to his wife Heather for 42 years.   He retired as a dentist.   I encourage you to read more about Gord and his Rotary and family hisotry:  https://www.rotary.org/en/gordon-mcinally-turns-ethos-action.  Gordon's brother committed suicide so one of his focuses for Rotary this year is prioritizing mental health and the removal of the stigma associated with it.   Of course, we will continue our fight to END POLIO NOW.  Please follow this link to see all of the Presidential Initiatives: https://my.rotary.org/en/news-media/office-president/presidential-initiatives.

Campbell House Tour

We had a wonderful meeting at  Campbell House the Hospice facility in Collingwood. The house was busy with lots of visitors and activity.  We were escorted through the new addition which holds four new patient rooms.  We were filled with pride when we seen the Rotary Spa room and the dedication board with our club's name listed. We were informed of all the programs and support for the patients and families that takes place there. The kitchen smelled of delicious lasagna and the art work hanging from all the local artists beautified the halls, common areas and patient rooms. It truly is a home. This year we have named the Hospice Georgian Triangle once again one of our chosen charities from our Corvette Lottery.

Zach makes Tracks!

Last nights meeting was nothing short of inspirational!.
Zach Holfer is the boy from Barrie that had a big dream. With the love and support of his family Zach , rode his bike, walked, scootered  and ran from Barrie Rvh all the way to the parliament buildings to meet Prime Minister Trudeau.  To date Zach has raised over 108 000.00 for the children's mental health program at RVH hospital. We had over 30 people attend which was exciting but the "whip cream on top of the cupcake" was that we had 7 children attend our meeting all ranging from 11 to 13 years old. Exposing these kids to Rotary was a real highlight for me. Look for more coverage of the evening on facebook and Collingwood today.

What a huge turnout on Monday night.
I am pleased to say that we had many alumni HHART members , new guests and Rotarians attend.
After 50 , I stopped counting! It was heart warming to hear testimonials from the members who just came back from the villages of Dominican. The projects that were covered were the new Montessori style school for 3-8 years,( which was partly funded by foundation dollars) . The cementing of one of the main streets, painting the outside of some homes, the ongoing dental and medical triage programs and a new roof for one of the main buildings that house 20 plus families! No more sleeping under tarps for them. I loved hearing the stories and seeing the before and after pictures of some of the people that have had their lives changed from our friends at Hhart. Here is a great article that was written in the online Collingwood today news , please have a look. https://www.collingwoodtoday.ca/local-news/wasaga-rotarians-part-of-11th-mission-to-dominican-9-photos-850443 Thank you to everyone that was able to attend, it truly was a great night!

Rotary Town Clock Dedication

story thumbnail
On September 13th our club had the honour of unveiling the first Rotary Town clock in the Town of Wasaga Beach.
On hand for the special ceremony was District Governor Brian Menton and his wife Dorothy, Assistant Governor Kim Giffen, our MP Dr. Kellie Leitch,  Mayor Cal Paterson and more than a hundred residents who were excited to see the towns' newest landmark unveiled. As the above photo shows, she's a beauty!!
Many thanks to Ehab Masad, Danielle Blanchard & Holly Haire-Ellis from the clock committee as well as the entire Rotary club of Wasaga Beach & Area for supporting this initiative.  If you haven't yet purchased a plaque, I suggest you do as its a great place to recognize your business, a loved one, or to record the memory of one no longer here.

We had a busy meeting today with guest speaker Twyla Nicolson and her Assistant from the Town making a great presentation on “How to Vote” in the upcoming municipal election.  Times are changing and we are moving to internet and phone based voting.  The most important thing you can do today is make sure you are on the voters list.  You can contact Town Hall at 705-429-3844 or visit the website at www.wasagabeach.com.  Last election only 27% voted – Twyla is shooting for 75%.
Our newest Rotarian was inducted.  Cathy Johnson took the oath while her sister Rotarian and sponsor  Marilyn Ruttan stood by her side.  We welcome Cathy to our club.  She has already been quite involved in our club since her retirement in the Spring.
50/50 was drawn and guest Rotaractor Alex got the ticket but now the blue ball – the pot continues to grow.  Next week there is no lunch meeting but a Club Assembly at 7:00 p.m.
A reminder that a very special guest Bryn Styles will be attending our August 25th meeting.  We will also celebrate 30 years as a Rotary Club.

Today we had a great meeting with guest speaker Dr. Kelly Volmers and her son Ben to speak about their experience on the HHART5 mission.  Kelly brought slides and explained to us the connection she made with the AAASosua.  She spade and performed surgery on many dogs at a clinic.  She also travelled to the villages and looked at the various sick dogs and prescribed medications which will be followed up by the folks at the clinic.  Kelly was encouraged to do a distribution while she was there and gave out milk to a long line of children.  Ben is now 13 and he enjoyed his trip and helped with various tasks.  Dr. Volmers has already committed to going back on HHART6!  She and her son provided a wonderful new perspective on the aid we are providing in the DR.
Great new that Bryn Styles will be a Guest Speaker at our meeting on August 25th to talk about the restoration of the Paul Harris House.

Elizabeth de Groot proposed a general motion to the membership to vote on which was seconded by Peter Wilson.
Motion:  The Rotary Club of Wasaga Beach will provide 20 bar shifts for Blues fest September 12, 13 and 14 in exchange for 20 smart serve trainings done in a group.  The date is to be determined.  We will also receive a gold sponsorship which includes our logos on posters, ad in the program and recognition at the event.  They will also allow us to sell PopCorn for Polio.  PASSED.

50/50 - Elizabeth got the winning ticket but the white marble.

Reminder of Gala meeting tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. at Jennifer Levesque's house.

CORVETTE - only 193 tickets left to sell.

SAA - no singing today but had a great round of fines and happy bucks!

July 21 2014 Meeting Summary

Today was a business meeting where all the chairs of various committees gave their reports.  We sang a good "$10.00" version of Happy Birthday to Rotarian Lorrie Good.  Good round of Happy Bucks and fines.  Our Rotary Exchange Student Jennifer is back from her month long tour of Canada and looking forward to the BBQ on Wednesday to say Good-Bye before she returns to Taiwan.  Rotarian Angela Piercey gave a very personal and powerful message for her 3 minutes of Rotary.  She summarized a trip she had made with many fellow travel agents and they announced if any Rotarians were in the crowd to go outside and say the "4 way test" and share stories.  It was then that Angela felt the power of Rotary and knew she wanted to make a difference and work hard in our club.  Corvette tickets are going well at 910 sold but crucial that Elvis and Kempenfest get good weather so hoping for some personal sales to put us over the top.  The clock is in and Danielle reported that the town is working on building the platform.  Todd is looking for some help of the membership committee to meet with potential members to explain "what Rotary is".  Please contact directly.  First meeting with 2 Collingwood clubs and Rotaract will take place to plan Rotary Day on Monday July 28 at 8 a.m.  Please contact Sylvia if you want to be part of this planning. 2 years in Rotary for Angela Piercey and 1 year for Holly Haire - Congratulations.  50/50 draw was WON by Patrice McCammon.

Great meeting today as Maurisa Doreleyers shared pictures and highlights of her Rotary Exchange trip to New Zealand.  She has many great adventures with her fellow Rotary Exchange students including white water rafting, site seeing, and a 4 day hike on Melford Trek which was 53.5 km.  One of the highlights was seeing dolphins close up in the Ocean.   She says that the trip has made her more independent and she thanked the club for sponsoring the trip.  Peter and Todd updated on Corvette.  We have ½ the tickets sold but need to rally as a club to make sure we sell out.  Reach out and sell some tickets if you can.  Evelyn’s granddaughter was with us today as well as Jacqueline Wallace and Lisa Doreleyers.  Good round of Happy Bucks and Fines.  A reminder to sign up for the BBQ for Jennifer’s going away party at the de Groot’s.

Sylvia conducted her first meeting of the year as President and informed us about theme for this year “Light Up Rotary”.   Good attendance with 26 people attending including some little ones.  Holly brought her two young ones and Abigail brought Isaac.  They were all very well behaved!  We sang a horrible version of Happy Birthday to George Watson for $5 in the pot!   Cathy Johnson was introduced as Marilyn’s guest and also her intention to join our club.  Our new SAA Danielle had everyone stand and dig in their pocket for change to all pay a happy buck to welcome Sylvia as our new President.  Peter Wilson gave a Corvette update and we are just over 700 tickets sold to date.   Marcel was congratulated on his 6th anniversary with our Rotary Club.  Elizabeth did 3 minutes on Rotary and talked about attendance.  It is Sylvia’s hope that each person can strive for 100% attendance and Elizabeth explained all the various makeups.  You can do a Corvette shift; attend a Board meeting or committee meeting.   You can also go to another club.  Elizabeth will be tracking attendance and makeups to help Val and Sylvia with the administrative load.

Jennifer L was inducted as President-Elect as she was not able to attend changeover.

Sylvia met with the two Rotary Clubs and the Rotaract club and we are looking to have a Rotary Day in the Fall to showcase our work.  Anyone interested should contact Sylvia.  Cathy Johnson got the 50/50 ticket correct, but failed to pull the blue marble.   The Gala meeting set for tomorrow was cancelled and Elizabeth will send e-mails to reschedule.  Next week Marisa D. will tell us all about her Rotary Youth Exchange trip to New Zealand.  Reminder for Jennifer’s Farewell party at the de Groot’s on July 23rd. July

What a great time we had at Rogers TV this morning with Catherine Thompson who interviewed Marcel and I about our incredible Easter Hamper project. It was a lot of fun to brag about the great things our club does and to highlight how the proceeds from our Corvette Lottery go back into our town with this hands-on project where we work with Foodland to buy the groceries, pick them up and deliver them to the food bank where a team of Rotarians then sorts them into 330 hampers which we help to hand-out and even deliver (where theres a need) the following day!!  What a great Rotary project, so proud to be a Rotarian!

A great big thank you to our club was received by Adrianna and Robert who attended the Rotary Youth Leadership Academy at Geneva Park in Orillia April 20-22, 2012. Both students confirmed the highlight of the weekend was the outdoor team building activities but also had lots of stories of all the great things they learnt. They came home tired but happy to have been able to have taken part.  Once the school year is over, they have offered to come and speak at a club meeting and share a few more details. A big thank to Rotarian Patrice who drove to Orillia on Friday morning.  What a nice surprise it was to bump into past club member Erin who volunteered at the RYLA weekend when I picked the kids up on Sunday. I truly believe RYLA is an awesome opportunity that Rotary provides and I have volunteered to join the district committee to ensure this program continues.

Feb 6th Meeting - Worlsey Elementary School Band Performs

Posted by Elizabeth de Groot on Feb 05, 2012

Great to have the Worsley School Band to perform at our meeting.  George Watson was on hand to introduce the band a give a brief history of Rotary involvement in the band.  The history is listed below.

HISTORY OF THE WORLSEY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL BAND

In the early 1990s, Brian Hamlin, music teacher for Worsley Elem. School, was advised that the School Board had cut the music programme & his attempt to form a school band was not going to happen. Brian approached George as a parent and Rotarian to see if Rotary would be interested in becoming a sponsor of some sort. At that time, our youngest children were in that school and were to be part of the band. Rotary agreed, a committee was formed with Brian, other school parents & George as the Rotary liaison. The music programme first operated out of what was then Byrnes Ave School, which held grades 6-8.

The band was originally called the Wasaga Rotary Youth Band, and Rotary bought the original instruments for the students, adding a few each year. The students would lease or rent those instruments from the school & eventually through that process. the band became and still is self-sufficient. The last request for funding from Rotary was to sound-proof the music room when grades 6-8 were moved back to the 39th St location. That was done & a plaque put outside the room giving Rotary the credit for the creation of the band.

The students performed at several events over the early years, including Rotary meetings. They still participate in local parades as well various school concerts.

An update on our outbound Sammy Tripp

more to follow

Can you tell by these photos that she can't wait to get home!?

Me neither!
We have booked Sam's return ticket ... she will be back in Canada on Monday July 16th 2012. It's hard to believe that less than a year ago this week we didn't even know she would have the opportunity to take a Rotary exchange. What a difference a year makes in one's life ... in all of our lives.
I have attached some photos from her south island tour (18 days), her holidays in Australia and her Christmas in New Zealand. Hmmmm ... I remember when I went down under, it is the one other place on earth that I truly felt I could happily call home. If only it weren't so far to fly! Sam tells me we can expects LOTS and LOTS of visitors to our home in the coming years - we can't wait!

"The residents of North Simcoe and Muskoka, north of Toronto in Ontario, have Rotary clubs to thank for the beautiful "Rotary House" , an overnight lodge for patients travelling for cancer treatment from parts of Rotary district 7010 and 7070. When planning began for new Cancer centre in Barrie's Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre, Rotarians were at the centre of the planning and fundraising with local Rotarians sitting on both the hospital board and the foundation board and the chair of the " I Believe " fundraising campaign.

Today, club presidents attended the unveiling of recognition signage within Rotary Place which lists all the participating clubs and included a tour of Rotary House which has now been operational for 8 months and has hosted more than 500 overnight stays of much appreciated accommodation for cancer patients and their family members.

Rotary Place is a four story building which includes "Rotary House". the home away from home for cancer patients, the Family Medicine Teach Unit and health center administrative offices freeing up space within the health center.

Rotary clubs in the area, 13 clubs, were successful in raising $1.55 Million Dollars to build Rotary Place. Rotary house includes 40 rooms and 80 beds to accommodate cancer patients and their family members.

Rotary Club of Wasaga beach was recognized by being fourth on the recognition sign measured by amount of contribution, representing the Rotary club of wasaga Beach Mr.Todd Young and Ehab Masad .

A record of 7 teams of 4 players showed up to golf on a beautiful Friday September afternoon.  Each team had one female captain and she carefully directed her golfers.  The last foursome out was lead by Lisa Doreleyers – all that Wednesday golf paid off and she was able to have her 3 men, James Koehle, Glen Godovitz and Jeff Ahonen, pull off the victory.  A huge BBQ was held back at the de Groot’s house that included well over 40 folks.  The food was “over the top” and the desserts to die for.  A great day and evening enjoyed by all.   We thank Roger for his kindness in allowing Sammy to golf for free and give him clubs.  Wasaga Sands was a great host.

Sammy Tripp arrived safely in New Zeland

We just got off the phone with Sam - she sounded like she was around the corner. The daughter that met her in Auckland was TRACEY PARKE - she was our very first Rotary exchange student that we hosted in 2005! Sam arrived safe and sound in Napier and is with her counsellor and his family. She will spend the next week or so getting organized before moving in with her first HOST family. The weather is cold there, they had snow yesterday. Sam said it's really not very cold - oh to be Canadian eh?!
Sam starts school on Monday ... will organize her uniform this week and then get registered and pick classes etc next.
They have plans to show her around this week and meet some of her school mates. She has a rotary orientation day on Saturday where she will meet the other INBOUND students from all over the world, also living in New Zealand for this year. Sunday they have arranged for dinner with two of her other host families ....
Her adventure has truly begun now - stay tuned ... I will try to share her stories, photos, etc over the coming weeks/months/year
