Shots For PolioA fun evening was had and $500 raised to support the District 7010 End Polio Now at a recent Shots for Polio event. Club members and friends played different games, taking ‘shots’ at everything from dart boards to card games. Polio is still a concern in our world and Rotary has worked since 1984 to eradicate this terrible disease. We are 99% of the way there, but Polio anywhere means that it is a concern everywhere. Rotary will continue the fight to rid the world of Polio.

Tree Planting with Friends of Nancy IslandGathering with the Friends of Nancy Island and families who were dedicating trees in memory of loved ones, Rotary was proud to be a partner in this project on a sunny afternoon at Beach 4. Marilyn Beacroft told how the Friends first put 30 benches along the beach for those who walk, like a rest, or need a spot to watch an awesome sunset. Today, with trees affected by Beatle Bugs and the Emerald Ash Borer, the focus has turned to planting indigenous species to provide shade and homes for birds.

Zach makes Tracks!Last nights meeting was nothing short of inspirational!. Zach Holfer is the boy from Barrie that had a big dream. With the love and support of his family Zach , rode his bike, walked, scootered and ran from Barrie Rvh all the way to the parliament buildings to meet Prime Minister Trudeau. To date Zach has raised over 108 000.00 for the children's mental health program at RVH hospital. We had over 30 people attend which was exciting but the "whip cream on top of the cupcake" was that we had 7 children attend our meeting all ranging from 11 to 13 years old. Exposing these kids to Rotary was a real highlight for me. Look for more coverage of the evening on facebook and Collingwood today. |

It was all about HHART!What a huge turnout on Monday night. I am pleased to say that we had many alumni HHART members , new guests and Rotarians attend. After 50 , I stopped counting! It was heart warming to hear testimonials from the members who just came back from the villages of Dominican. The projects that were covered were the new Montessori style school for 3-8 years,( which was partly funded by foundation dollars) . The cementing of one of the main streets, painting the outside of some homes, the ongoing dental and medical triage programs and a new roof for one of the main buildings that house 20 plus families! No more sleeping under tarps for them. I loved hearing the stories and seeing the before and after pictures of some of the people that have had their lives changed from our friends at Hhart. Here is a great article that was written in the online Collingwood today news , please have a look. https://www.collingwoodtoday.ca/local-news/wasaga-rotarians-part-of-11th-mission-to-dominican-9-photos-850443 Thank you to everyone that was able to attend, it truly was a great night!

Kelly brought slides and explained to us the connection she made with the AAASosua. She spade and performed surgery on many dogs at a clinic. She also travelled to the villages and looked at the various sick dogs and prescribed medications which will be followed up by the folks at the clinic. Kelly was encouraged to do a distribution while she was there and gave out milk to a long line of children. Ben is now 13 and he enjoyed his trip and helped with various tasks. Dr. Volmers has already committed to going back on HHART6! She and her son provided a wonderful new perspective on the aid we are providing in the DR.

Good round of Happy Bucks and fines. Our Rotary Exchange Student Jennifer is back from her month long tour of Canada and looking forward to the BBQ on Wednesday to say Good-Bye before she returns to Taiwan. Rotarian Angela Piercey gave a very personal and powerful message for her 3 minutes of Rotary. She summarized a trip she had made with many fellow travel agents and they announced if any Rotarians were in the crowd to go outside and say the "4 way test" and share stories. It was then that Angela felt the power of Rotary and knew she wanted to make a difference and work hard in our club. Corvette tickets are going well at 910 sold but crucial that Elvis and Kempenfest get good weather so hoping for some personal sales to put us over the top. First meeting with 2 Collingwood clubs and Rotaract will take place to plan Rotary Day on Monday July 28 at 8 a.m. Please contact Sylvia if you want to be part of this planning. 2 years in Rotary for Angela Piercey and 1 year for Holly Haire - Congratulations. 50/50 draw was WON by Patrice McCammon.

RYLA 2012 - Thank You!
A great big thank you to our club was received by Adrianna and Robert who attended the Rotary Youth Leadership Academy at Geneva Park in Orillia April 20-22, 2012. Both students confirmed the highlight of the weekend was the outdoor team building activities but also had lots of stories of all the great things they learnt. They came home tired but happy to have been able to have taken part. Once the school year is over, they have offered to come and speak at a club meeting and share a few more details. A big thank to Rotarian Patrice who drove to Orillia on Friday morning. What a nice surprise it was to bump into past club member Erin who volunteered at the RYLA weekend when I picked the kids up on Sunday. I truly believe RYLA is an awesome opportunity that Rotary provides and I have volunteered to join the district committee to ensure this program continues.

Feb 6th Meeting - Worlsey Elementary School Band PerformsGreat to have the Worsley School Band to perform at our meeting. George Watson was on hand to introduce the band a give a brief history of Rotary involvement in the band. The history is listed below. In the early 1990s, Brian Hamlin, music teacher for Worsley Elem. School, was advised that the School Board had cut the music programme & his attempt to form a school band was not going to happen. Brian approached George as a parent and Rotarian to see if Rotary would be interested in becoming a sponsor of some sort. At that time, our youngest children were in that school and were to be part of the band. Rotary agreed, a committee was formed with Brian, other school parents & George as the Rotary liaison. The music programme first operated out of what was then Byrnes Ave School, which held grades 6-8. The band was originally called the Wasaga Rotary Youth Band, and Rotary bought the original instruments for the students, adding a few each year. The students would lease or rent those instruments from the school & eventually through that process. the band became and still is self-sufficient. The last request for funding from Rotary was to sound-proof the music room when grades 6-8 were moved back to the 39th St location. That was done & a plaque put outside the room giving Rotary the credit for the creation of the band. The students performed at several events over the early years, including Rotary meetings. They still participate in local parades as well various school concerts. |

Half way point Sammy TrippAn update on our outbound Sammy Tripp more to follow
Can you tell by these photos that she can't wait to get home!? Me neither! We have booked Sam's return ticket ... she will be back in Canada on Monday July 16th 2012. It's hard to believe that less than a year ago this week we didn't even know she would have the opportunity to take a Rotary exchange. What a difference a year makes in one's life ... in all of our lives. I have attached some photos from her south island tour (18 days), her holidays in Australia and her Christmas in New Zealand. Hmmmm ... I remember when I went down under, it is the one other place on earth that I truly felt I could happily call home. If only it weren't so far to fly! Sam tells me we can expects LOTS and LOTS of visitors to our home in the coming years - we can't wait!

Annual Golf Tourney - September 9 2011A record of 7 teams of 4 players showed up to golf on a beautiful Friday September afternoon. Each team had one female captain and she carefully directed her golfers. The last foursome out was lead by Lisa Doreleyers – all that Wednesday golf paid off and she was able to have her 3 men, James Koehle, Glen Godovitz and Jeff Ahonen, pull off the victory. A huge BBQ was held back at the de Groot’s house that included well over 40 folks. The food was “over the top” and the desserts to die for. A great day and evening enjoyed by all. We thank Roger for his kindness in allowing Sammy to golf for free and give him clubs. Wasaga Sands was a great host. |

Sam arrived safe and sound in Napier and is with her counsellor and his family. She will spend the next week or so getting organized before moving in with her first HOST family. The weather is cold there, they had snow yesterday. Sam said it's really not very cold - oh to be Canadian eh?! |
