Once again Rotarians gathered to support the annual Big Brothers/Big Sisters Bowl-a-thon!
Be sure to read Rotarian Walters entertaining summary of this very successful event!

A wonderful summary from Rotarian Walter  (event Chair)

I would like to thank all those involved in the event, either as active participants or as sponsors.  We had seven bowlers turn out for this annual event and I am sure I speak for everyone when I say, a good time was had by all.

Special thanks to President Elizabeth who juggled her calendar in order to be part of our team again this year.  Elizabeth brought a whole new game with her this year and started off like the proverbial house on fire.  We areunsure if she peaked early or if she then just backed off a bit to let the rest of us get in the game.  Once again this year Elizabeth was our leading fundraiser and we really appreciate her efforts.

Sylvia is looking more and more like she knows this game better than she lets on.  She made a comment early on about trying to make herself more comfortable by visualizing the pins as upside down ice cream cones and the balls as large scoops of chocolate ice cream.  It worked well as she pressed for the lead in total pin fall all night.

Kelly, just back from a ski trip, had minor difficulty adjusting from his ski boots to his bowling shoes in the early going.  He overcame that quickly and soon showed he did know his way around a bowling alley as well as he does hurtling down a double diamond run.  Unfortunately, like the Leafs, Kelly hit a few goalposts along the way, the bowling equivalent is left a few corner pins.  He did have a strong finish, thanks for joining us Kelly.

We were delighted to have Sylvia’s son Robert join us again this year.  Robert looks like a bowler and the evening finished just a little too soon for him.  After struggling a bit midway through the second game Robert said enough is enough, I need a better finish.  He promptly put together two strikes in a row and blew through the 150 mark just as our night came to an end.

What can I say about Sammy?  One thing for sure, Sammy’s game for anything.  Once we convinced him he shouldn’t go down and set up in front of the pins and attempt to block our shots like the goalkeeper he is, we turned him into a forward and he started to score.  Sammy’s last comment was, I think I could do better if we played full body contact bowling.

That left Roger and Walter.  They really didn’t have the slow start everybody thought they were having.  It was just that they had played almost nine holes (frames) before they realized that unlike golf, the object of the game was to finish with as high a number as possible instead of trying to go low.  The good news is that neither of them lost any balls along the way like they do in that other game.  The night finished with the two of them arguing about handicaps and how to apply equitable stroke control to bowling   :-)

Thanks once again to our bowlers and to to our members, families and friends who provided sponsorship along the way.  The really good news is that we surpassed our self imposed target and raised just overone thousand dollars for this great cause!  Well done Rotarians!
