Three rooms refurbished at Munjuwa CentreWe are really proud to have been instrumental in getting these three rooms refurbished for Munjuwa Aboriginal Corporation in Queanbeyan, working in partnership with Monaro Police, Kids in Care ACT and the Rotary Club of Bungendore. These welcoming, light-filled rooms will be used as meeting spaces and by community members, including families and children, seeking support. Turning words into actions, this was a practical initiative for our club under Rotary’s ‘Say NO to domestic and family violence. Say YES to respectful relationships’ campaign which launched late last year. We acknowledge and thank all involved in delivering this great outcome. It was fantastic to celebrate the official re-opening of these rooms last Friday morning with Aunty Dr Matilda House, Aunty Linda and Kaya from Munjuwa, Officer in Charge Inspector Joshua Beaumont and Sergeant Cherie Knox from Monaro Police District, Deputy Mayor Esma Livermore, Dennis Ogden from Kids in Care ACT, representatives from the Rotary Club of Bungendore and of course, some of our own club members.

Full Moon Walk On Feb 11th members of the Rotary Club of Jerra and friends enjoyed an athletic social outing. Eleven outdoor loving friends met at the base of Mt. Jerrabomberra to walk the 2.5km to the lookout at the summit. In the middle is Liz Miller wearing her Australian Rotary Health workout shirt to help build awareness for physical and mental health. Help promote health by becoming an ARHsport champion at ahrsport.com. 
At the top we treated ourselves with cheese, biscuits, fresh fruit, and a toast to good friends and good times as we enjoyed the full moon rising.

Jerrabomberra Bush Walk
On Sunday, July 31st 25 members of the community met to celebrate national tree day with a walk through the bush around Jerrabomberra.
Queanbeyan Landcare, Molonglo Catchment Group, Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council (QPRC) and local landowners organised the walk as part of the Stringybark to Environ Revegetation project funded by the NSW Environment Trust. The walk took in recent native plantings on the ridges and explored the local vegetarian. National Tree day is an opportunity for all of us to give back to the environment.

Clean up Australia Day
On the morning of March 6 members of the community met on the shores of beautiful Lake Jerrabomberra. The goal was to collect as much trash from in and around the lake. During our clean up Australia day campaign we removed enough trash to fill 7 large trash bags. What a great way to spend a Sunday morning. Hanging out with friends, enjoying the nice weather and making our community beautiful for the enjoyment of all.

Keeping in touch
Elizabeth Perez graduation from Uni
Elizabeth Perez was our clubs second international exchange student arriving in January 2007. She came from Mazatlan, Mexico.
Elly attended Karabar High during her time with us and made many friends at school as well as other exchange students in district 9710.
We have kept in touch with Elly via Facebook and it was was with great pleasure to see her graduate from University.
Elly moved from her home town to Playa del Carmen in 2013, which is located along the Caribbean Sea in the state of Quintana Roo in Mexico, to complete her degree. This is a popular tourist area in eastern Mexico and very appropriate as her degree is in Administration and Tourism so she is living in the best city in Mexico to use her qualifications.
Hosting exchange students is one of the most rewarding experiences Rotary has to offer. The exchange student becomes part of the family and when they succeed in life the host parents are proud.

A Night @ the Haunted Penitentiary
A fund raising event for the
Treehouse - Queanbeyan Special Needs Group Inc

Over the course of its long and colourful past, Queanbeyan's had it's share of convicts, bushrangers, prison escapees – and many a reputedly haunted location linked to crime and mayhem.
In a unique regional event, the public will have the chance to explore this mysterious and darker side when they enter the 'Twilight Zone' to spend a Night @ the Haunted Penitentiary.
The evening will be hosted by Queanbeyan's Mistress of Mystery, Nichole Overall, creator of the popular Mysterious Queanbeyan by Moonlight Tours and the successful Ghost Train of the Limestone Plains, who says the night will be the creepiest of experiences.
'Participants will be able to walk through 330m2 of deserted corridors, silent rooms, restricted areas and empty cells – although, perhaps not so empty. It's a place where your worst nightmares come together behind the barred windows.'
The historic record also notes that many a factual misfortune has occurred in the area.
'The now abandoned building at the heart of this stands on ground which has witnessed much. If a pre-requisite of a haunting is a particularly intense tragedy or emotion, there's been no shortage of them here,' comments Nichole, who's spent almost a decade unearthing Queanbeyan's secrets.
So, does Judge Callan, killed when a horse he'd just purchased pinned him against a fence, continue to hold court over the area? Is there a Sister from the nearby Convent still keeping watch on her charges? And what of all those who tragically met their end in the watery depths of the nearby Queanbeyan River – do any remain behind?'
Nichole says that people will need to come along and decide for themselves during this one-night only event where the darkest and most terrifying elements of the city's history and mystery intertwine.
'This will be the only chance to explore what lies within as we also raise much-needed funds for another local entity, the Queanbeyan Children's Special Needs Group.'
'To paraphrase the most famous of those to walk amongst the shadows, Dracula, we welcome you to our dominion, but we make no promises - you can go in, but will you come out?'
This is a one-night only event not to be missed! The evening includes a terrifying journey inside an abandoned building transformed for the occasion, music and a BBQ when all the screaming is done.

With the return of our 15 volunteers on the 7 October from another successful trip to Tonga carrying out refurbish and renovation works on the school buildings and ablutions blocks at a local primary school in the village of Lapaha which is a 40 minutes drive from the Capital Nuku'alofa, singled the end of a 5 year association and the end of the 3 staged Rotary International Matching Grant and RAWCS project. 2010 - First trip and lodgment of a matching Grant with Rotary International. 2013 - Stage 1 local contractors carried out the works associated with the matching grant reinstating fresh water to the school and refurbish the boys toilet block2014 & 2015 - Stage 2 & 3 were RAWCS Projects both with 15 Volunteers who carried out extensive refurbishment to the original school building and security & pest control meshing to the main building and the other buildings. As part of Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children (ROMAC) program, Jerra' Rotary Club is sponsoring baby Fitz and Mum Freda from the Solomon Islands. Baby Fitz is in Canberra for a life-changing, indeed a life-saving operation to remove a tumor that is attached to his vertebrae. Mum and Bub arrived on 8th June and have settled into one of our member's homes, where they will be supported by the Club over the next 6-8 weeks. All is progressing well, albeit slowly, and Mum & Bub are just starting to adjust to the Canberra winter.
There has been good coverage of the story by WIN TV, who hope to produce a documentary story, and Margie Abbott, Patron of ROMAC and wife of our Prime Minister, recently visited Freda and Fitz at the Canberra hospital.
All part of the good work Rotary, and the Jerra' Rotary Club, does both locally and internationally.

Over the weekend of 2-3 May Jerrabomberra Rotary members
were out in force once again in support of the annual MS 24 Hour
Swim. President Paul, who has been on the event organising
committee for the past 6 years said “This is a great event that
Jerrabomberra Rotary proudly support through both event
planning and the all-important operational delivery over the swim
weekend”. “Over 7 events the annual swim has raised over
$700,000 and per capita the Canberra event bats well above its
weight compared to other larger state capitals”.
As with past years Rotarians manned the event registration desk
throughout the 24 hours, coordinated the announcements and
spot prizes, and provided an afternoon/early evening and
breakfast BBQ for the hungry swimmers.

Our Jolly Band of VolunteersThe Rotary Club of Jerrabomberra, and friends, recently traveled to Nuku'alofa, Tonga, to refurbish the Lapaha General Public School. Situated about 25 km from the capital of Tonga, the school has about 280 students and eight teachers and serves the surrounding rural area. The school's, facilities were extremely run down and in drastic need of refurbishment. As part of a matching grant between Rotary International and our club, fifteen volunteers from the Rotary Cub of Jerra', along with other Rotarians and friends from southern NSW and the ACT, carried out a program of refurbishment works that enhanced the teaching facilities, upgraded classrooms and toilet facilities, removed pigeon access points to classroom and storage areas, mended broken drainage and sanitary fittings, and provided the school with reliable potable water. To assist the local community even further, additional works were conducted by local contractors in 2012. Further works are now being planned for another visit in 2016. Just another example of Rotary in action. Even the kids helped out

The Rotary Club of Jerrabomberra is looking for volounteers from Rotarians & friends that wish to be included in our trip to Tonga to help refurbish a local primary school that is in dire need of some basic repairs. The school is in Nuku’alofa, Tonga, with the team planning to leave Sydney on 22 September, returning the 7 October 2014. Accommodation will be in Toni’s Guest House approximately 20 km from the school and 4 km into the city centre. We will be using two Mini Buses supplied with drivers to get around. A program of social activities is also being arranged, so it is not all work and no play. Jerra Rotary is renoun for its fun-loving spirit. Rotary Backyard Blitz at Queanbeyan HospitalIn our latest project the Rotary Clubs of Jerrabomberra, Queanbeyan and Queanbeyan West joined forces to undertake a ‘backyard blitz’ type project at the Queanbeyan Hospital's Renal Unit. Since its opening the hospital's Renal Unit has had a fairly large backyard garden area which was unable to be used by either patents or staff due to its slope and lack of landscaping. As a result the area had become neglected and a source of mud and water pooling in heavy rain. The area bordered by large trees had the potential to become a nice shaded rest and the management of the Renal Unit welcomed an approach to help from the three Rotary Clubs. A plan was hatched to excavate and level a 50 Square metre area which would be edged by a retaining wall to provide a large retained garden bed and a good sized and well drained courtyard area for use and enjoyment by the Renal Unit staff, patients and families. In early December 2013, the work started with the excavations (using some “big boys toys”), followed by an army of Rotary volunteers descending on the unit to lay the drainage, build the retaining walls and lay the pavers. To keep the army of volunteers well fuelled, the Queanbeyan Country Women’s Association provided much needed lunches and morning and afternoon teas. Final finishing touches were completed before Christmas. When asked how the yard looks now, the Renal Unit manager answered, "We are over the moon about it. Our utmost appreciation for the effort and hard work afforded by all; a truly inspiring and humbling experience to see everyone come together like that. … Thank you all for such a wonderful gift.”

Supporting Primary School in TongaThe Rotary Club of Jerrabomberra is supporting projects at the Lapaha General Public School, which is about 25 km from the capital of Tonga, Nuku'alofa. The school has about 280 students and eight teachers and serves the surrounding rural area, but its facilities are run down and in drastic need of refurbishment.
Rotary is providing the school with reliable potable water, upgraded toilet facilities, enhanced teaching facilities and is refurbishing the school classrooms. To assist the local community even further, the work is being conducted by local contractors. Another example of Rotary in action.

Rotary's Epic Mower Ride Across AustraliaThe Rotary Club of Armadale in Western Australia is driving a Hustler Super Z ride-on lawn mower around Australia to benefit charity. They have already been from Perth to Kalgoorlie and across to Adelaide, all in benefit of Australian Rotary Health's Mental Illness Research Program and the EJ Whitten Foundation for prostate cancer awareness and research. When we say we're riding to get to 'the other side', we're not just talking about geography. We're riding this lawn mower to help people in need get to where the grass is greener. On Thursday, 3 October, one of the riders will speak to the Rotary Club of Jerrabomberra about the Why and the What of the Ride. Come along and learn more about some of Rotary's interesting fund raising activities.
