INTERNATIONAL PROJECT

Posted by Wendell Ross on Jun 25, 2014
(The following is a note from club project coordinator Wendell Ross providing a July 2016 update from the 2014 project. Additional photos have been added to the international project photo album on the right.)
Recently  I visited the hospital where the Crilap Foundation that the East
Alton Rotary Club and Barranquilla Oriente Rotary Club cosponsored was
located. I found out that it had moved to a location in the annex of a new
hospital called Puertoazul in February.  So the wife and I took a taxi to
it.  The sad news is that the director I first met had past this last
January. Her then assistant Katia Mendoza is now Executive Director.  And
now the Crilap foundation is called Fabrica de Sonrisas Foundation.
Website www.fabricadesonrisas.co.  There is a page where you can make
private donations.
When I entered the office and mentioned East Alton Rotary Club you should
have seen their faces light up. It was very heart warming. We talked about
the project.  Our clubs project helped 15 children's lives change.  There
were  surgeries this day for 2 more  happening.  Also the foundation had
35 applicants for  surgeries.  So as in many places in the world this is a
continuing need.  I was glad to be a part of helping so many children in
need via using Rotary International.
On the offices walls were 5 pictures/photos of
some of the children that they helped.  4 of the 5 pictures/photos are of
the children that were helped from our Clubs project.

(What follows is the timeline and reflections of the cleft palate international project coordinator Wendell Ross. A photo album titled "international project" can be found in the right side of our home page.)
It is interesting how things in life turn out.  I went to Barranquilla Colombia for some cold business calls in Sept. of 2010. At the hotel I was staying at there was a photographer taking some pictures. I started talking to him  to try and get some business leads and also to get some ideas of the culture of the country. I mentioned Rotary. He told me there were 3 Rotary Clubs in Barranquilla. We got talking about Rotary International projects an he mentioned about a school in the Pueblo that his aunt ran that was having problems with the building.

So now East Alton Rotary is looking for other Rotary Clubs to partner with to complete this project. So if your club is interested in this international project please contact Wendell Ross via email:redd@newssor.com  More information about the project can be found by LINKING HERE

CHRISTCHURCH RELIEF EFFORT

Posted by Rick Hooks on Mar 02, 2011
Rotarians in New Zealand are doing what they can to assist victims of the devastating earthquake 22 February in Christchurch, where more than 100 people have been killed and at least 200 are still missing.
As efforts move from search-and-rescue to recovery, responses from Rotarians offering assistance have been pouring in. Authorities are requesting that donations in kind or noncash items not be sent to Christchurch, as the government, local agencies, and NGOs have sufficient emergency and second phase supplies for the ongoing needs of the community.

DISTRICT GOVERNOR VISIT

Posted by Rick Hooks
ImageRotary District 6460 Governor Gordon Jumper made his annual pilgrimage to the East Alton club on September 1st. He praised the great work that the club is doing and suggested that we could do even more if we continue to grow our membership. We were reminded that the only reason Bill Gates was not a Rotarian was becase he wasn't asked. Gordon told us that we were quite close to reaching the $200 million match for the Gates Foundation grant to help eradicate polio. Through June of 2011 there were only 200 cases of polio reported worldwide.

A NEW AVENUE OF SERVICE

Representatives at the 2010 Council on Legislation approved an enactment 28 April to add a fifth Avenue of Service: New Generations.

After adopting an amendment to change the name from Youth Service, as originally proposed, to New Generations, the Council narrowly supported the addition to article 5 of the Standard Rotary Club Constitution. The 263-250 vote was received by surprised gasps and applause after a short debate.

ROTARY PRAYER

Posted by Rick Hooks
We invoke a blessing upon this meeting
and on people of goodwill everywhere.
May we prove ourselves worthy citizens,
Devoted to truth, sincere in fellowship,
given to service, and steadfast in faith.
May we be faithful to these ideals.
May we stand firm when the fight is hard.
May we have strength sufficient for this day.
May we be as big as our problems and bigger
than our responsibilities.
May we live up to our capabilities.
