The Riverbend East Rotary Club recently recognized the February Service Above Self award winners from Roxana High School.
Haley Eads is a Senior at who has spent her high school career defining what it means to be a leader in every sense of the word. A dedicated athlete in Volleyball and Track, Haley also serves as a member of the National Honor Society and has been a cornerstone of the Student Council for all four years of her high school career.
To Haley, "Service Above Self" is a simple but profound commitment: providing others with whatever they need and placing those needs above her own.
Haley has served as the Vice President of the National Honor Society and has been a constant volunteer for "Kids Christmas," the Junior Olympics, and numerous fundraising drives. Her motivation is centered on a single goal: to help as many people as possible and make their lives just a little bit easier.
Her advice to younger students is to dive in headfirst: "Join as many organizations as you can that deal with community service; it gives you more opportunities to help more people.”

Landon Smith is a Senior whose presence is felt in nearly every corner of Roxana High School. Whether he is on the soccer field, leading in Student Council, performing with the Chamber Choir, or providing rhythm for the marching band, Landon is a student who leads by doing. Yet, for all his extracurricular achievements, it is his commitment to his community that defines his character.
To Landon, "Service Above Self" is an active pursuit of putting others first and encouraging those around him to reach their highest potential.
His volunteer resume is exhaustive: he has played music for residents at Stillwater Senior Home, rung bells for the Salvation Army, sorted clothes for the Family Resource Center, and served as a tech assistant for the junior high musical. Whether he is helping with Freshman Orientation or volunteering for the Hope Center, Landon sees these moments as evidence of the strength of our community. He is motivated by the tangible difference a group of dedicated people can make when they work together.
Landon's advice is simple: "Volunteer with things you enjoy. Enjoying what you do leads to greater joy with those you help."
