Program - Bonnie Kaunisto visited our club to talk about the Princess and Pirates event. The event will be held at the Cisler Center on May 7th from 2-4 pm. Tickets are $5 in advance or $7 at the door. The welcome princes and pirates of all ages! Proceeds go towards supporting the fight against violence and suicide.

Speaker:

Brent Osterhout introduced our speaker, Officer Robert Brown, on behalf of the Community Improvement Committee. He has identified some properties with violations. Over 8 years he has worked with over 100 properities of individuals who could not afford repairs. Brent is organizing a Rotary committee to improve one property this summer.

20th Annual Graver Auction - March 5, 2016

Our Annual Rotary Graver Auction is celebrating its 20th year this year! Our Club has raised over $244,000 from the Graver Auction in the previous 19 years, which the Club has distributed as donations to local youth and community programs and events, and also used to support international worldwide Rotary projects. Tune in this year on AM 1230 WSOO radio and Charter Cable channel 189, or witness the auction live from Sault Ste. Marie City Hall on Saturday, March 5, 2016 from 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

February 8, 2016 Meeting Notes

- Debbie handed out pledge cards to all Rotarians to participate in Rotary Foundation giving. Every Rotarian needs to fill out and return the pledge card to Debbie, regardless of whether or not you elect to donate. She simply needs to get an election from everyone so you will no longer be asked.

- $500 given to HOSA students

- $100 to the morning club Art display event

- The board approved the purchase of a community stage

- Kindergarten Round Up Books signup went around at today's meeting. The cost is $5 per book to sponsor.

the Volunteer Center Coordinator for EUP United Way spoke about the different programs she help with for UW. Specifically, she spoke of the Thanksgiving basket distribution which fed 70 families in SSM. She is looking to triple this number next year.

She raised some questions; does our club want to get to the goal of $100 donation per Rotarian every year?; does our club want to try to qualify for grants next year?; Is anyone willing to volunteer for a grants committee?

Richard Crawfton was the guest of Dan Dasho. Richard is the Soo Evening News publisher and is interested in joining our club.

Announcements:

Board Meeting last Friday:
- Rotary 101 to be schedule soon for Red Badge members
- Auction planned for March 5, 2016. 1st planning meeting at the Antler's on Oct 22
- Game Show committee meeting 10/6 at Smith & Co.
- Dick Guysbert approved for membership pending club name on the table. He also just came out of a successful bypass surgery in Marquette
- Haunted Depot Haunted House Friday and Saturday 5:30-8pm last two weekends of October
- Phil Becker is retiring this winter and will be stepping down from Membership Chair to allow more time for traveling in retirement. He will continue to be very active with our club in other ways. Any interested person in being membership chair please contact Jocelyn or Phil

Program:

Jocelyn presented Jimmy Hobaugh's wife, Virginia, with the 2015-2015 Rotarian of the Year Award for Jimmie Hobaugh. Jimmied was a long time, valued member of our club. The board voted to give this award to Jimmie in his year of passing to commemorate his service to our club, his perfect attendance, and over all achievements in and outside of Rotary.

Merit Fry with the Mali Rising Foundation presented today on the organization. The foundation believes that all children in rural Mali should have a good quality Middel School education in walking distance. They chose Mali, 1 of the 10 poorest countries in the world for these reasons:

1. Stable country

2. With democracy under threat

3. and a long history of education passion

4. with people tha believe in the power of education

Thus far, the foundation has been able to build 18 schools, with the 19th under construction, which 11,000 children have gone through.

Ruth O’Gawa – Lake Superior Watershed Conservancy

The LSWC is an international non-profit organization dedicated to ensuring the long-term sustainable health of the Lake Superior watershed through basin-wide communication, education, scientific study, preservation and conservation of Lake Superior and its ecosystems.Ruth shared the group views the lake and region as a whole vs. individual communities/regions.They currently are working on a Lake Superior Water Trail from Sault Ste. Marie to Thunder Bay.The trail highlights water, land, and communities along that path.Signage, safety info, docking sites, etc. will be developed at various sites along the trail.Ruth asked the group to spread the word about the group and the offerings on and around the beautiful Lake Superior shore.Tax deductible donations by businesses, estates, or private donations are gladly accepted.

A couple funding requests were approved at the board meeting last week:
- 2nd and 4th grade Rudyard classes funding for the IXL program.
- 4th grade Rudyard class funding for busing to a project they do with senior citizens
The board also approved an appropriation of all the funds raised from 50/50 and fines for fiscal year 14-15 to be contributed to the endowment fund for the Strahl Scholarship. This total was roughly $1,700.

Stephen P. Youngs: Our club had the great honor to present Dave Weir with the Stephen P. Young's award for this past year. This award is given annually to the Rotarian in our club that best exemplifies the Rotary motto "Service Above Self". Dave has been an outstanding member of our club for 36 years and continues to hold himself up to this motto. Not only does Dave continue to support our club in the various fundraising and charitable activities, but in recent years has started to bring his grandchildren as well. By doing so, he is creating a lasting legacy with our Rotary club, which cannot be rewarded enough. We are ever so grateful to have Dave Weir as a member of our club and appreciate his long lasting commitment to Rotary.

Paul Harris Fellow: Barb Hampton, of Smith and Company Real Estate, and wife of Rotarian, Jon Hampton, received a great honor from our club today. Barb was rewarded by our club with a Paul Harris Fellow. The Paul Harris Fellow recognition, given in the name of the founder of Rotary, Paul Harris, acknowledges individuals who contribute, or have contributions made in their name, of $1,000 to the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International. Our club chose Barb Hampton for her unprecedented leadership in the founding of the Rotary Betsy Game Show Extravaganza. For the 2nd year running, the game show has been a great success and has raised over $25,000 since its creation. These funds have been used to help fund the Betsy Demaray endowment fund for local scholarships and will help provide improvements to Project Playground. Betsy Demaray played an integral part in the creation of Project Playground and it seems only fitting for the game show, in memory of Betsy, to continue to support the projects that were so special to her. We especially congratulate Barb for her hard work and commitment to Rotary, but it is also very important that we say thank you to all the Game Show Committee members, which include Andrea Osborn, Craig Flickinger, Jon Hampton, Brent Osterhout, and Linda Basista. Thank you!

Meeting Program:

Oliver Turner, City Manager, presented on city updates. He highlighted the Master Plan which is to be updated every 5 years. The Master Plan tells us how development should occur within a community. Public meetings will be held at City Commission Chambers to cover specific topics on August 11, 12, 26, and 27 at 5:30 pm. A few points from a long list of city happenings include: improving side walks, supporting LSSU enrollment and creating a more student friendly community, outdoor ice rink, power canal walk way. Also, the city thanks our club for the addition of 8 new grills at Rotary Park. Also, at this time, there are not definitive plans for a new movie theater once the current one is taken down by incoming Meijer's Store.

Jesse Beckett from Tapawingo Farms shared details about the local farm & 501©3 organization.Founded in 2011 the farm seeks to provide a positive impact on at risk youth through the use of farm animals and recreational activities.The farm has horses, alpacas, goats, and more.Tapawingo is a native term meaning “place of joy” or “place of peace”.The farm has several programs to reach youth such as:

More than 1,000 children visited Tapawingo from May to October last year.No child is turned away for inability to pay.Many volunteers assist the organization from serving on the board of directors to cleaning out animal stalls.Ms. Beckett mentioned several opportunities to assist Tapawingo in meeting their mission.Such as:expansion into year round programming with an indoor riding facility in the future, completion of a picnic and sensory garden area for visitors, a new stock trailer and a second well.

Program:

Dana Sanderson joined our meeting today to speak about the Girls on the Run program. Cindy Merkel is the executive director for the program. Girls on the Run was established in Sault Ste. Marie, MI 7 years ago and has grown to a total of 110 girls in the most recent season. The program targets young girls age 8-13 but mainly grades 3-5. The girls meet weekly to discuss many topics, including bullying, nutrition, gratitude. They also have games and activitis all centered around confidence building and wellness. While doing this, the girls are working on building towards a 5K run. At the end of the 10 week program a celebration 5K run is held for the girls and their family. Volunteers are needed and appreciated to help with the 5K event. Also, if you are interested in being a coach pleae contact Dana at Leitz Sports Center. The total cost of the season for 1 girl is $90 although there is a sliding fee scale for lower income familes. Also, Barish's offers a fantastic discount for the girls to purchase running shoes. If a family is not able to pay for their daughter to participate in the program, other options may be available. You may find more information about Girls on the Run on their facebook page.

Program:

Michele Gilbert, director of the SHYP program in Sault Ste. Marie, presented the program. Michele works with homeless youth in our area and provides housing and educational services to them. Michele works with youth in the 16-21 age range, and indicated that the age of youth requiring assistance has been trending downward with 17 being more and more common now. Michele gets referrals from the schools and DHS for homeless children. Michele indicated that her program defines homeless as “lacking a fixed and adequate nighttime residence.” This includes youth that are in abusive or neglectful homes or youth that have been “couch surfing” for a period of time (staying with friends, etc.). Once a young person requiring assistance is identified, Michele tries to place them into one of four apartments downtown. The youth can stay in the apartments for up to 18 months, during which time Michele is working with them weekly to set goals and go through an education process with them to set up a stable, independent life after the 18 month period. Michele’s program is funded through State contracts, which have three year terms and typically are not renewed. As such, Michele has been losing funding and is in need of support to continue providing services to the homeless youth. Michele is looking for a means to obtain supplies to stock the apartments for the youth. At the request of several Rotary members, Michele will be creating a list of needed items and submitting a grant application to Rotary for assistance.

Program:

Bob Sweeney from the Mackinac Bridge Authority was the program. Bob came to talk about the history of the Mackinac Bridge and some of the Bridge’s ongoing maintenance and upcoming improvements. Bob was born in and lives in St. Ignace.

Bob started by telling some of the history of the Bridge. The proposal for the Bridge was made in the 1920’s, and in 1950 the Mackinac Bridge Authority was created and commissioned to test the feasibility of constructing a bridge. Raising the large amount of capital was the primary issue, but other issues that the group faced were dealing with geology, ice pressure, and aerodynamics of a proposed bridge. Construction of the bridge started in 1954, and the bridge opened on 11/1/1957 with a toll cost of $3.25.

Bob then discussed the bridge as it operates today. Bob indicated that the Bridge received constant ongoing maintenance and inspections. The piers, beams, and cables are continuously inspected along the full spectrum of the Bridge. The Bridge employs a 45-man maintenance crew. 20 joints of the Bridge are replaced each year, as well as 6-20 grading sections. The Bridge currently has a painting project underway that is schedule to be completed by 12/31/15. The Bridge hosts around 15 special events each year, including a biking event, a bridge race, and the annual bridge walk that attracts about 60,000 walkers. The bridge expects to take in about $24.5 million in revenue this year, some of which will be deployed into an upcoming $200 million bridge deck replacement project. Bob indicated that the replacement cost of the Bridge today would be $1 Billion.

Business Professionals of America (BPA) students presented about their trip to the national convention.Students compete in competitions related to business marketing, communications, business administration, finance, entrepreneurship, etc.18 students qualified to compete at nationals in Anaheim, CA.12 students were recognized on stage for their work in competitions.The club has 111 student members.8 students were also recognized at the national level as Torch Pillars for their involvement beyond the classroom, such as in community service.The students thanked Rotary for the donation to their fundraising effort.

Rob Laitinen from the Chippewa County Road Commission joined us today to speak about the Proposal 1 on the May 5th ballot. The proposal is to remove sales tax on fuel and increase MI sales/use tax to 7%. This will allow many other laws to go into effect, re-appropriate funds, and increase the budget for roads in our cities, villages, and counties. It's recommended by Rob, the Chippewa County Road Commission Manager, and Linda Basista, the Sault Ste. Marie City Engineer to vote in favor or this proposal.

The administrator for the Rudyard Pool, Alicia Lawlor, spoke today about the pool and grant request. They recently submitted a request for money to puchase new touch pads for the pools to be used to keep time for swim meets. The pads cost roughly $800 each and our club approced a request for $300 at a recent board meeting. The Consolidated Community School Services managers the pool and keeps a facebook page and link on their website with pool hours and classes, etc. There is family open swim on Sundays from 3-7 pm

Dan Voss spoke today about the exciting new changed coming to the local Salvation Army. They are moving to the building Soo Co-op Grocery Store used to be located in. Expected opening is mid-April. Under phase 2 of these changes, over a 2 year implementation, all operations will be moved to the new location, including the chapel and soup kitchen. There is a large need for donated food items. They are considering 3 new programs to take place at the current location once all other operations are moved to the new location. These three ideas are: 1. Teen/young adult coffee house ministry, 2. Air rifle shooting sports lessons, and 3. Laundry. A facebook page will be out soon to let us know what donations they need and/or are accepted at the new location.

Auction day is coming fast – Saturday, March 21^st.The Graver Auction began back on March 8, 1997, named after Rotarian Charlie Graver, who was active with the youth programs of Rotary.The auction has raised over $227,000.00 to date.It’s the club’s largest fundraiser and takes all club member’s help to be successful.Some examples of youth programs funded by auction proceeds: BPA, 4-H, Salvation Army, Robotics Club, Homeless initiatives/programs, FCCLA-Pickford, Soo Township Schools, wrestling tournaments, Project Backpack, Strahl Scholarship, and more.

This year’s donations total value currently at $11,000.00.Keep the donations coming in.Items must be dropped off to Craig’s office by Tuesday, March 17, in order to be included in the Sault Evening News insert.Items can be dropped off up until Thursday by 5pm, but will not be advertised.Last minute items may be dropped off at city hall (upstairs commission chambers) after 1pm also.

Dave Jahn introduced Teresa Dwyer-Armstrong to her 3^rd Rotary meeting as a guest, and she will be up for nomination next week

Announcements:

President Dasho announced that FERC agreed with Cloverland that costs from the Presque Isle power plant should be distributed to those who benefit from it, which is promising news for Eastern U.P. residents
Tim Hall gave announcements for Sault High girl’s basketball districts beginning tonight and for Sault High hockey playing in Cheboygan. Dr. Hall discussed enrollment drops occurring all across the state of Michigan are leading to budget issues that will be discussed in the coming weeks. Finally, Dr. Hall discussed the guidelines for shutting down the schools to dispel myths and rumors. Dr. Hall reiterated that there is considerable effort among area officials that take into account current conditions and the weather forecasts at various times of the day to determine if school should be closed. Generally, 30 to 40 degrees below zero, either by air or wind chill, for sustained periods of time in the morning are benchmarks to consider closing schools. Schools are mandated to have 1098 hours and 175 days of instruction by State law.
Tracey Laitinen announced that large Rotary Auction ads will run in The Evening News on 3/8/15 and 3/15/15, with smaller ads being run on 3/13, 3/15, 3/17, and 3/19. The auction currently has 129 items, and time slots are still open for volunteers.

Program:

Tracy Menard, a teacher at Sault High and wife of Varsity football coach Scott Menard, came to give a presentation on Challenge Day. This is a new initiative that Tracy has brought to Sault High that gathers 100 middle or high school students and at least 25 adults from the community to participate in an event that promotes communication and acceptance of social issues that are often not discussed. This event features two facilitators from California that come and lead activities and games designed to promote openness regarding issues such as racial diversity, abuse of various types, and other types of conflict that individuals tend to internalize. Two such activities are called “If You Really Knew Me” and “Crossing the Line” which promote sharing and discussion about feelings and personalities.

Tracy brought two students who recently participated in the Challenge Day this past year to share their experience. Both students echoed the typical thoughts of students that this is a hugging and crying event that most students shy away from. They indicated that they thought the same things going in, but that the event was so immersive and engaging with the activities that they did not even realize they were opening up and sharing as much about the issues being discussed, and that the day was life-changing.

Tracy shared statistics regarding the event such as that 97% of adults recommend the event, 90% of participants feel the skills learned will help them in their life, and 90% felt they became more away of social issues and the impact of certain actions and bullying. This is the second time they have held a Challenge Day, with the first being 4 years ago. Tracy hopes to get enough support to have one every 2-3 years going forward.

Cindy Ockenfels from the Chippewa County Health Department spoke at our meeting today about the current issues of vaccinations. Michigan recently passed a new Waiver Law that denies people to waiver child vaccinations for school attendance for religious/philosophical reason unless they go directly to the Health Department. They must listen to an information lecture, provide a valid reason, then get stamped and signed off. After the lecture, vaccinations will be available instantly if they change their mind. Cindy also answered questions about vaccinations recommended for certain age groups. She explained that the Shingles vaccine is available at the health department for age 60 and over or at your pharmacy for age 50 and over. If you have any questions regarding your/your families vaccinations or to make an appointment, don’t hesitate to contact the Chippewa County Health Department.

Our program today was Kris Dunbar, the LSSU athletic director. Kris gave us an update of the LSSU athletics programs, including the new JV teams they were able to offer students this year. The college boasts 15 Varsity Sports. The golf team is 3^rd in the region and 398^th in the country! Also, the college owns a new golf simulator that the students are able to use year round. The simulator is also available to the general public. Men’s basketball is having a fantastic year, and current 21 & 4.

Bob Selke volunteered to be our program today for a 2^nd installment of his life/career as a military pilot. He picked up is story in 1970 after he returned from SE Asia. He went to B52 training school. He was stationed in Kincheloe January 1971 – June 1973. In 1973 he moved to New York to a professor at Fordham University. He spoke of his experiences during flight school and teaching. He then opened up discussion of any world topic.

Presentation of Checks:

A check for $3,500 was presented today to the LSSU Foundation in memory of Betsy Demaray. This donation represents funds raised by the Rotary Game Show night. The check was presented by Jon and Barb Hampton to Ken Demaray and Tina Nason along with Tom Cotes from LSSU. Tina gave a brief explanation that the funds from this donation are to be used to fund a scholarship for LSSU “non-traditional” students majoring in Business with a 3.0+ GPA. This was a scholarship opportunity that was originally influenced by Betsy, as she was a non-traditional LSSU student herself.

A check for $3,500 was also presented today to the Chippewa County Community Foundation in memory of Betsy Demaray to be applied toward the Strahl Scholarship. This donation also represents funds raised by the Rotary Game Show night. The check was presented, again, by Jon and Barb Hampton to Ken, Tina, and Debbie Jones with the CCCF. Ken read an excerpt from a timeless speech given by Morris Strahl many years ago.

Rotarian of the Year Award: Jon Hampton

This year’s Rotarian of the Year award was presented to Jon Hampton. Jon was nominated by members of the club and voted for during a board meeting due to his exemplary service to our club for many years, especially this past. Jon, along with his wife Barb, put forth great effort this past year to create and facilitate the Rotary Game Show night which earned over $7,000. During accepting his award, Jon also gave recognition to Craig Flickinger and Jennifer Dunton as major contributors to the event. He also offered that this award truly belongs to his wife, as the event would not have been made possible without her. Thank you, Jon, for your continued service to our club!

Stephen P. Youngs Award: Craig Flickinger

This year’s Stephen P. Youngs award was presented to Craig Flickinger as the Rotarian that best exemplifies the motto “Service Above Self”. It goes without saying that if there is a Rotary event taking place, you will most likely find Craig there. He has contributed countless volunteer hours to our club either through lending a helping hand or coordinating the event itself. Craig played a large role in facilitating the Rotary Game Show night in addition to coordinating all of the Music in the Park popcorn/water sales, as well as many other Rotary events. Craig has had perfect meeting attendance for the last 4 consecutive years and has attended more Rotary events/fundraisers in the past Rotary Year than any other Rotarian. We truly appreciate Craig’s service above self to our club and thank him for his continued leadership!

Presentation to Incoming/Outgoing President:

Dan Dasho presented David Jahn with a president 2013-2014 plaque with gavel and Past-President pin. Dan thanked David for his leadership this past year and his dedication and service to our club.

David Jahn presented Dan Dasho as incoming president with the ceremonious transfer of the Turning Leaf bottle of wine. Dan accepted the bottle of wine for “safe-keeping” and shared with the club that he is looking forward to another great year of carrying out the Rotary mission of providing great leadership in our community.

As his first act as President, Dan Dasho closed the meeting with the Four Way Test.

Sault Area Schools Homeless Liaison-Carol McKay

Carol McKay is the (volunteer) Homeless Liaison for the district. The McKinney-Vento Act provides funding to purchase academic materials for school children identified as homeless. The district cannot use these funds to provide personal hygiene items (towels, toothpaste/brushes, deodorant, skin lotion, etc.) and seeks support from local businesses and organizations to provide these much needed items. Carol can be reached at Lincoln Elementary School at 635-6626.
