Shred Day Fundraising Event
Rotary Club of Lindsay Annual Shred Day
The Rotary Club of Lindsay held it’s annual shred, “E” waste and scrap metal disposal day on Saturday September 23rd. It ran from 10:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. and was held at Waste-Logix at 2829 Hwy 35 south across from Carmax Hyundai. The public started to arrive about the 9:15 A.M. mark and the last vehicle left at 3:15 P.M. The Rotary members and guests shredded 11 tons (10,000 KG) of confidential paper documents which will all go back into recycled paper. They also gathered approximately 4000 pounds (1850 KG) of “E” waste and 1000 pounds (455 KG) of scrap metal. The Rotary Club picked up documents to be shredded and stored them in a secure facility located at Waste-Logix until the big shred day. Donations of “E” waste were also picked up and stored until the same day. The Club charged $7.00 per bankers box to be shredded and the “E” waste and scrap metal were accepted on a no charge basis. Other participants in this project besides Waste-Logix were Miller Waste Systems and Lindsay Iron and metal located on Halter Road. It was a perfect day for this event and lunch was donated by Charlie and Amy McDonald who own the Grand Experience Restaurant in Lindsay. Although the exact financial information is not yet available, it is estimated that this project will add to the Club’s fundraising by $10,000.00. The funds will be used for Community projects around Town like the Wilson Field washroom project which should be completed by the end of October and their sights are now on a new splash pad for Elgin Park located on Angeline Street North. The Rotary Club would very much like to thank all the participants who took part in this project with them and the public who supported this project.

Pirates of the Caribbean Sea Rotanza ProjectOur annual Rotary Rotanza Fund Raiser was held again this year on Friday May 12th at the fairgrounds in the commonwell building. There were about 800 attendees who were served tasty samples of cuisine from approximately 20 different restaurateurs. On top of that marvelous event, there was a silent auction along with a live auction with auctioneer Patty O'Reilly. There was also a live band, called the A-List, led by Sandy Murphy and six other fantastic musicians who are working very hard through University, plus our Rotary bar. This was complimented by 30 draws of $150.00 each through out the night. All the tickets went back into the drum in order that all participants would be on equal footings for the big grand finally draw of a new Ford Mustang vehicle or $25,000.00 in cash. The evening was a huge success for all attendees and a great time was had by all. The final numbers are not here as of this writing, but it is expected that this could possibly raise in the area of $20,000.00 to go into our community service. Rotary Supports Local AgenciesThe Rotary Club of Lindsay presented two cheques recently to Kawartha Lakes Boy's and Girl's Club and A Place Called Home. The first cheque was to support families who needed an extra subsidy in order for their children to participate in Club activities. The second was to complete an addition to the back building of A Place Called Home to house staff. Both cheques were received with great happiness. Our Club was very proud to have made these contributions.

Rotary Supports Five Countie's Children CenterThe Rotary Club of Lindsay continues to support Five Counties' children and have been since 1978! WOW!! They have donated more than $350,000 since then and helped A LOT of children along the way. Recently, our 2016 Ambassador family, made a presentation to the Lindsay Rotary Club at the Lindsay Golf & Country Club. Wilson Field Washroom Project Going AheadIt was recently announced by the City Of Kawartha Lakes Lindsay legacy C.H.E.S.T. Fund 2017 program that our Rotary Club has been successful with their application for funding. The letter was received on February 8, 2017 from the City that our Rotary Club will be awarded $144,389.67 to be used for the Wilson Field project. This project has been ongoing for the last few years and got stalled for a little while. It is now back up and running and will benefit all users of these wonderful facilities located in the Wilson Field complex located on Colborne Street West at St. Joseph Road. It is expected that this project will be completed and in use by August 31, 2017 or earlier if possible. Along with this grant, our Rotary Club has also been successful in obtaining approximately $7000.00 from the 50/50 grant fund and our Rotary Club will also be contributing a substantial amount of money to complete the funding challenge. This project when completed will allow all organizations using these facilities to expand their usage and also bring in weekend tournaments which they currently are unable to do.

Rotary Serves AgainAt the end of November, our Rotary club recently collected 8 cases of medical supplies from a variety of locations, packed them into boxes and transported them to a Mennonite church located in Wallenstein Ontario. There they will be repackaged and shipped to a location in a third world country in Europe where the Mennonites in that area of the world will distribute them to needy people and also to Doctors without borders for their very good work. Along with these supplies a variety of equipment was also sent such as Walkers, wheelchair, canes and crutches. Our club also supported the United Way of Kawartha Lakes with a donation of $5000.00 which will go a long way assisting the several agencies that depend on this support.

Our Remembrance Day Service On Nov. 7thOur Club honoured our Veterans of our community with our Remembrance Day Service conducted by Police Chief John Hagarty. The number of Veterans that were in attendance was impressive. They were piped in by Piper Brian Gowan and sat with the members throughout the hall. Representatives from the Royal Canadian legion, Sir Sam Hughes Branch #67 were in attendance along with their colour party. The guest speaker was Belinda Wilson, Zone F-4 Commander. Belinda was selected to attend the 2013 legion Pilgrimage of Remembrance and has used her talents as a writer, photographer, graphic artist and songwriter to put together a tremendous presentation that gives a unique perspective on Canadian Military history during the first and second world wars.

Donated Wheelchair To Someone Who Could Not AffordOur Rotary Club received a wheelchair from a donor who wanted it to go to someone in our community who could not afford to purchase one. We are very happy to say that on October 18th, this piece of equipment found a new owner through Five Counties Children's Centre in Lindsay. Our Thanks goes out to the donor and we are very happy to have had this opportunity to assist another person within our Community

Lincoln Test Drive Fund Rasing ProjectWith the co operation and thoughtfulness of Polito Ford and Lincoln Sales, located on Kent Street West in Lindsay, our Club held a Test drive A Lincoln vehicle project at Wilson Fields in Lindsay. The purpose of this project was to get the public to test drive a vehicle and when they did that enjoyable exercise, our Club received a $50.00 donation from the Lincoln Motor Car Company. There was a limit on the number of test drives which was 150 and if that number was reached, our club would receive $7500.00. In reality we did a total of 93 test drives which gave our club $4650.00. These funds will be directed towards our Wilson Field Washroom project. Thanks to everyone who participated in this project with us. Your support is greatly appreciated.

Rotary Club Assists Trent University With Nursing SuppliesThe Rotary Club of Lindsay receives unneeded medical supplies through out the year. Most of these items are sent to third world countries through the Mennonite community located in Wallenstein Ontario, (St. Jacobs area) Some of these supplies become out dated and Drs. Without Borders and other organizations can not use them. They used be disposed of without having any further use. We have discovered that the nursing program at Trent University can use them in the teaching of the nursing students and we now take the outdated supplies to the University located in Peterborough Ontario for their use. So far this year, we have taken 18 cases of supplies to them for their use.

Club Donates Wheelchair To Someone Who Can Not AffordOur Rotary Club had a reclining wheelchair donated to the Club last week. As is our custom, we put out a notice to all Therapists and Social Workers within our Area to see if there was someone who they were aware of who could use such equipment. It had been measured for sizes, type and all accessories that were on this piece of equipment. We are extremely pleased that through Five Counties Lindsay office there was such a person who did arise. The chair was received by this needy person last week. We certainly hope that this will improve this persons quality of life. For obvious reasons, their name and other personal information can and will not be revealed. The important message is that someone who needed this equipment doesn't need it any more.

Additional "Rotanza" DrawAdditional "Rotanza" Draw
During the "ROTANZA" event held on May 6th, there was an additional draw where tickets were sold for $5.00 each. The prizes were a top of the line patio set consisting of a patio table, umbrella and a set of very nice chairs, a top line Bar B Q and also a $300.00 gift certificate for Canadian Tire Stores redeemable at any C.T.C. store in Canada. There was a total of 874 tickets sold for this draw and the winners are listed below.

Rotary Welcomes New MemberBrodie McMorrow was inducted into Rotary on Monday January 25, 2016. Brodie is an alternate with Cooperator's Insurance. Brodie is now a 3rd Generation Rotarian. Brodie's Grandfather was Ray Price.

Our Annual Burger DayThe Rotary Club of Lindsay held it's annual Burger Day Project in Victoria Park on Tuesday September 8th. The set up crew were on the job about 8:00 A.M. and we were serving hamburgers and hot dogs by 11:00 A.M.. Right on schedule. We served about 700 orders during the day. Entertainment was provided by Mr. Bob May who did a great job. Public information was provided by City of kawartha Lakes Fire Service, EMS., Police Service and the local O.P.P. There was tons of fellowship and laughs to go around. The winner of our 50/50 draw was Mark Mitchell of our own Kawartha Lakes Police Service and Mark graciously donated the proceeds back to our Club for use within our Community. The rain was a no show and everyone had a great time.
Our "THANKS" go out to all who participated and helped to make this fundraiser a success and as with all our fundraisers, the proceeds from this event will go towards Community Service.

Shelter Box ProjectDuring the month of May, our Board of Directors approved a sum of money for the purchase of a Shelter Box. These boxes are used for immediate relief during disasters anywhere around the world. The latest one would be the Nepal disaster. This organization's head office is located in Cornwall U.K. and the Canadian operation is based at 159 Jane Street, Toronto Ontario and their number is 1.855.875.4661

Road Cleanup ProjectOn Wednesday evening June 3, 2015, a few Rotarians gathered together at the Golf Club and proceeded to pick up the trash along the section or road from the Logie Street bridge south to Highway #7. They picked up several garbage bags of trash along with a variety of other objects. This project happens twice a year, spring and fall, and it is a serious effort to try to keep this area clean of trash buildup. Rotarians involved were John Bennett, Bernie Nickerson, Marcus Tully, Jim Mackey, John Hunter, Christine Paradoski, Derek Denson, Linda Denson, Al Goard,
A very special mention is also in order for Derek Denson and his partner Linda who have for several years, cleaned up the trash along the Rotary Trail.They spend approximately 8 hours over a four day span with just the two of them to accomplish this task. "THANK YOU" Derek and Linda. Great job.

It is with great sadness that we pass along the information that Peter Milner of our Club has passed away. Peter was born June 22, 1923 and was 91 years old. He joined our club on May 4, 1968 and became President on July 1, 1976 until June 30, 1977. He served on several committees, chaired several committees and worked on several projects. Peter also became a Benefactor and a Paul Harris fellow during his time in the Rotary Club. He also worked on our club history book and information along with Rotarian John Coxon which he saw to it's conclusion. He retired a few years ago to look after his wife Brenda, at which time he became an Honorary Rotarian and has been in that capacity since. Our thoughts and Prayers go out to Peter's family. There will be a private family service tomorrow, June 16th and a memorial service at The Mackey Funeral Home on June 29th at 1:30 P.M.
