DICTIONARIES FOR 3rd GRADERS

Posted by Karl Isaac on Apr 29, 2012
"I believe strongly about strenghthening and supporting the community which we live and work in. There are so many amazing opportunities to get involved with doing just that here in the Turks & Caicos – and my choice for the past 4 years has been to work with the AMAZING team at the Rotary Club of Providenciales.
On a small island, every little bit helps, and the smallest of efforts has BIG and swift impact to many. One of my projects each year is the ‘dictionary project’ where we Oseta Jolly Primary School 3rd graderspurchase these really cool dictionaries each year from an organization called ‘The Dictionary Project‘ and distribute them across the country to Grade 3′s. Students really look forward to getting them, and they cherish them and hold on to them throughout many of their years.

This year’s project was a great success, the many smiles you see when handing them out makes all the effort worthwhile, and I’m already looking forward to start getting things organized for next year’s handouts. Get more information on the Rotary Club of Providenciales by visiting http://www.rotary.tc"

SAME TIME, ANOTHER PLACE

Posted by Karl Isaac on Oct 06, 2011

wh-kYes, we have moved to a new meeting home.  On October 6, Middle Caicos Cafe located at Windsor Plaza on Leeward Highway became our third meeting venue for this year.

It has been our challenge since the start of this Rotary year obtaining a venue that is right size, affordable and beneficial to our members and viable to the vendor.  We trust we will be at the Cafe through the remainder of the year.  It just shows the adaptability of our members; once we have a place to meet and fellowship, we are good to go!  A beer or wine anyone?

Eye Testing in Middle and North

Posted by Mike Sottak on Feb 05, 2011

The Rotary Club of  Providenciales, in conjunction with the Rotary Community Corps of North and Middle Caicos, recently completed an eye testing program for children attending  elementary schools on North and  Middle Caicos. The clubs worked with the  gracious support of Dr Julian Petrucci of Menzies Optometry who conducted eye tests for 53 students and identified 11 that are in need of prescriptive  glasses to see clearly. The Rotary Clubs will provide the glasses at no charge  to those in need. The program builds on a similar program conducted by Rotary  each year in Providenciales.

“Vision issues are a key  obstacle to better learning so we are happy to give all students who need this  kind of assistance a hand in improving their school experience," said Wilbert  Forbes, president of the North/Middle Rotary Community Corps. “Dr. Julian has  been a long time supporter of this Rotary program and we are grateful that he  could come to North and Middle this year.  Without his assistance it would  not be possible. This type of cooperation is a great sign of the active  community spirit that is alive and well in the TCI.”

Many thanks to Rotarians Mary, Charles Val and John who assisted with this proejct, as well as the RCC in North under Wilbert's leadership!

A merry band of Rotarians helped spruce up our signature roundabout on Leeward Highway this weekend, adding some holiday color and cheer to get residents in the Christmas spririt. Rotarians Val, John, Karen and Micky - as well as the always helpful Lawson crew - decorated the roundabout in holiday glitter and gave it a good cleaning as well. PP John even got to practice his Santa Claus entry, braving the heights to reach the tippy top of the roundaabout's main tree. Well done, all you elves!

Rotarians and Rotaractors will be out in force during the holidays this year, collecting food and other goods in our annual Christamas Food Drive program. Teams will be stationed at the major grocery stores throughout Provo on weekends in December, soliciting a can or two from exiting shoppers. All items and funds collected will go toward supplying the elderly of TCI with needed donations just before the holidays.

The Christmas Food drive is a great 'hands' on' project that only takes a few hours of your time, and is a fun way to connect with our community.

Contact Rotarian Karl, pictured here with a big haul from Quality Supermarket (thanks Owen!), for more information on how to help.

Her first use of the money - a $500 donation to Rotary! Well done, Tricia! She said she may even look into becoming a Rotarian herself.

The annual fundraiser netted about $5000 for the RCOP.

Thanks to all Rotarians who pounded the pavement and sold tickest to help make this another way we can fund important comunity projects.

The RCOP hosted the annual DG visit this past week, welcoming DG Diana White and husband Roger to our club and island.

It was a busy week for our District's leader, with visits to North Caicos and Grand Turk as well as lots of activity on Provo. The DG presided over meetings with our club and the Board. Rotarian Nell also hosted a social night at her house for the DG and Rotarians and Rotaractors (thanks Nell, thanks Blonie).

The club did its annual dictionary handout to the local elementary schools while the DG was here and she and Roger were a great help.

Finally, the DG did the honors in picking the winning ticket for the $10,000 Pot of Gold drawer held at the Conch Festival.

Bingo - we have a winner!

A record jackpot drew record crowds to our weekly Bingo game this past month and the streak which began in July finally ended last night, Januaury 31. Socito Del la Cruz covered all his spots in the jackpot game with just 53 balls, and took home a whopping $28,000. Close to 1,000 players jammed the Tropicana for their chance to win the big money, and even the preliminary games awarded record-level prizes. The real winner is Rotary of course as we will use the proceeds we earn as part of the Bingo fundraiser to support projects here in TCI and around the world. With the dramatic need for aid in Haiti, we will undoubtedly be able to use the extra revenue generated by this round of Bingo.
A big thanks to the Bingo Committee and all the other Rotarian volunteers who turned out in force over the past month when things were getting really crazy at the 'Trop. Many hands make light work and the games went extremely smoothly thanks to that 'all hands on deck' approach.
Bingo will take a few weeks off and look for an announcement for a new start up date, as well as a final report on this round, soon.

JULY 9, 2009 - The four kids we sponsored to attend the annual World Affairs seminar in Wisconsin paid our club a visit this week. They reported in great detail and excitement about their experiences at this outstanding event. The theme of this year's event was hunger and the high schoolers learned a great bit about the challenges our world faces in this regard. Plus, they had a chance to meet other kids from all over the world and share their culture and learn about how their peers live. They delivered excellent reports to the club and are obviously fine representatives of TCI (and hopefully, future Rotarians!) Special thanks to RoY Joy for chaperoning the kids and for Yvette for heading up this project.

Rotary club of Providenciales teams up with partner club in North Carolina to supply critical goods, vehicle to Provo Children's Home

JUNE 18, 2009 – The Rotary Club of Providenciales is nearing completion of a donation of a wide variety of essential goods and a vehicle to the Provo Children's Home (PCH) this week. The items were initially part of a support program for the original PCH, but became even more important when the old home was destroyed in last fall's hurricanes. The goods have been provided to the children and care givers in their temporary locations being used by the PCH. The donation was made possible through the local Rotary Club's partnership with the Rotary Club of High Point, North Carolina (USA), which together raised funds totaling almost $25,000 for the purchase of much needed goods and a vehicle to transport children to school and other activities.

MAY 15, 2009 - The Rotary Clubs of Providenciales and Grand Turk combined efforts on a tree planting project to spruce up Grand Turk. Thanks to the kind donation of trees from Sunshine Nursery, the barge transportation services of CBMS, and the nursery facilities of Mr Murray in Grand Turk, the trees were used to beautify several locations around the capital, including the Onid Glinton Primary School. Special thanks to our Grand Turk clean up partners Projectech for their assistance in making the planting happen!

The dictionary project hit the road this week and ventured to North Caicos and Middle Caicos where we visited 3 primary schools. We handed out close to 150 of the very popular dictionaries. We were met with enthusiastic and grateful students and teachers who loved the handy reference books and all the cool stuff they found in their new lifelong learning friend. PP John got stumped by some of the 5th graders on a few tricky words, but all in all, it was a very successful trip!

The RCOP made history this weekend by hosting its first ever Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) training session. RLI is a comprehensive program to help educate Rotarians on various aspects of Rotary. The course is implemented in 3 parts, and we hosted a session for Part 1. In total 19 Rotarians attended, including representatives from Grand Turk and Cat Island (Bahamas) clubs.

Big thanks to Haresh Ramchandani of Montego Bay, Jamaica, who led the session, along with discussion leaders Felix and Carla Stubbs from Nassau, and our own PP John Lawson, who made his debut as a RLI discussion leader at the session.

Stephen Stubbs shows off his new computer

Stephen Stubbs, a blind Turks and Caicos resident, is the proud recipient of a new computer and software that allows him to 'read' printed material, sort his music, and generally be a more productive person. Michelle Alway (left), his instructor from the H. Ross MacDonald School for the Blind in Ontario, helps Stephen at a recent RCOP Meeting.

Michelle trained Stephen on the new technology during an intensive week-long session at Beaches. The computer and software, along with Michelle's trip to TCI, was made possible through our friends at One World and was a cooperative effort among The Rotary Clubs of Watertown, New York (USA), Provo and Grand Turk, along with Beaches and the Social Services Department of TCIG.

Stephen is living on Grand Turk and will be starting a part time job with Radio Turks and Caicos as he pursues his dream of being a DJ.

DG Errol Visits Provo

The RCOP hosted DG Errol Alberga and his wife Leonie from August 17-21 as part of the annual trip to the Turks and Caicos that the leader of District 7020 makes. He visited both our club and Grand Turk (where he helped charter a new Rotaract Club!), and promoted the 2010 District Conference in his hometown of Kingston, Jamaica.

DG Errol attended a board meeting and our regular club meeting, toured the island, saw various projects we have done, and was guest of honor at a cocktail reception. He even managed to attend Sunday night Bingo. All in all, he came away impressed and re-iterated that the Provo Club remains one of the strongest in the District!

Together they raised funds which provided specialized equipment for the Miskal Centre, a local educational centre for children with learning disabilities. The centre treats children from ages three to twelve in areas such as didactic testing, emotional counseling as well as occupational therapy and speech therapy.
