Provo Rotary Sponsors Debate Team

The Rotary Club of Provo sponsored a team of four Clement High School students and their English teacher, Ms. Euleeta Powell at the 12th annual Model United Nations Session (MUNS) Debate (sponsored by the Rotary Clubs of The Bahamas in Nassau).The team, accompanied by Betty Maclean and Yvette Marcelin of our club, competed at the event on April 27, 2009.

The debating team consisted of Deangelo Rigby, Demaggio Rigby, Delray Lightbourne and Phildreka Mayham.

The MUNS serves to simulate the work of the UN and brings together students of 18 high schools from The Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands to discuss timely topics impacting their respective communities.

The goal of the MUNS is to challenge students to showcase accurately the policies, ideals and culture of their communities. The MUNS comprises two segments: a morning session, during which the students debated the question: "At the international level, do you agree that small states are disadvantaged based on their size, vulnerability, lack of influence, power and have the ability to obtain benefits in multinational fora like the UN?"

During the second session, students debated the question: "How should the UN respond to the many different challenges that climate change poses, particularly with respect to the most vulnerable countries, including small island states?"

The Clement Howell High School team, which won the Annual HIV/AIDS High School debate that was held in November 2008, as a part of the activities to mark World AIDS Day under the theme "Take the Lead! Stop AIDS! Empower and Deliver," represented the  Ukraine and competed admirably for TCI.
