Honorary Member Charles GoslinCharles Goslin, sculptor, artist, friend and Honorary Shawnee Rotary Member, died on January 22, 2023. In 2003 when the Shawnee Rotary Club was deciding on a project to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of Rotary International, a committee was formed and commissioned Charles Goslin to create a bronze sculpture that could be placed in a Shawnee park. The result was the "Lend a Hand" sculpture that is located in Listowel Park at 71st and Quivira. The sculpture was dedicated in September of 2004, five months before Rotary International's Centennial. Charlie's legacy of Shawnee art can be found throughout Shawnee in the form of sculptures, murals and paintings. On June 9, 2021, on behalf of the Shawnee Rotary Club, President Robb Garr, Linda Leeper and Joni Pflumm visited Charlie and his wife, Elizabeth, in their home and presented him with a Paul Harris Fellow and made him an official Honorary Shawnee Rotary Member. In a video that was taken from that visit, Charlie explained how he came up with the idea of a sculpture that would ultimately be an outstretched hand holding up the world. The last sculpture that Charlie sculpted was installed on Tuesday, January 24, 2023. It is named "Wild Bill Hickok" at Trail Scout Park, located east of Commerce Bank on Shawnee Mission Parkway. Funeral arrangements are as follows: Visitation; Friday, January 27, 2023 from 6:00-8:00 pm Amos Family Funeral Home Funeral: Saturday, January 28, 2023 at 11:00 am Shawnee United Methodist Church Burial: Johnson County Memorial Gardens

Veterans DayWhy is Veterans Day always on November 11th? These memorial gestures all took place on November 11, giving universal recognition to the celebrated ending of World War I fighting at 11 a.m. on November 11, 1918 (the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month). The day became known as "Armistice Day." In 1954, the holiday's name was changed to Veterans Day, to honor the veterans of all wars the United States has fought. To all Veterans, thank you for your time, bravery, and sacrifice for this country. We are forever grateful for what you've done to maintain America's freedom. Thank you for your service!

A Taste of ShawneeEven better second year
The crowds came out Saturday, April 16, for the Shawnee Rotary Club's second annual Taste of Shawnee.
Folks turned out Saturday, April 16, for the Shawnee Rotary Club’s second annual Taste of Shawnee. Comments from vendors, sponsors and attendees showed the event was even more successful than last year.
“It's always great to see the community come together for a good time, but it's even more rewarding knowing that all funds raised by the event will have a positive impact on several great charitable causes for years to come,” said Rob Moser, club president.
Final totals for this year’s event won’t be available for a few days, as some sponsorship funds are still outstanding. With matching contributions, last year’s event raised almost $28,000 for various charities. Benefactors from this year’s event include the Circle of Hope Foundation, Sunflower House, Rotary International’s Polio Plus effort and various charities supported by the Rotary Club of Shawnee Foundation.
The event was made possible by many generous sponsors. Presenting sponsor was Overland Park Regional Medical Center ER of Shawnee, a unit of HCA Midwest Health.
Platinum sponsor was Curtis and Pam Cooper’s UPS Store. Gold sponsors were Coca-Cola, Lathrop & Gage, P.A., and Johnson Controls.
Silver sponsors were Amos Family Funeral Home, the City of Shawnee, Rodrock Development, Old Shawnee Pizza and Milburn GFY Golfers.

SHAWNEE ROTARY CLUB HOSTS BBQ TO RAISE FUNDS TO END POLIO
SHAWNEE, KS – Taking advantage of a matching opportunity, the Rotary Club of Shawnee is hosting a BBQ to raise funds to end the spread of polio around the world. Rotary International recently announced a partnership with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation that would allow every dollar raised by local clubs to be matched, in an effort to fully eradicate the disease. “When our members heard about the matching funds from the Gates Foundation, we felt it was the perfect opportunity to further contribute to this critically important work,” said Pete Heaven, Shawnee Rotary Club President. Rotary International began its work to eliminate polio in 1979, with a project to immunize six million children in the Philippines. By 2012, only three countries remain polio-endemic—down from 125 in 1988. Tickets for the event are $25.00, and include BBQ and drinks. Sponsorship opportunities, ranging from $250 to $1000, are available. Contact Patrick Hammond, Past President at doc@hammondchiro.com, to purchase tickets or become a sponsor.
