Shawnee Rotary Hosts BBQ to End Polio
SHAWNEE, KS – Taking advantage of a matching opportunity, the Rotary Club of Shawnee is hosting a BBQ to raise funds to end the spread of polio around the world.
Rotary International recently announced a partnership with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation that would allow every dollar raised by local clubs to be matched, in an effort to fully eradicate the disease.
“When our members heard about the matching funds from the Gates Foundation, we felt it was the perfect opportunity to further contribute to this critically important work,” said Pete Heaven, Shawnee Rotary Club President.
Rotary International began its work to eliminate polio in 1979, with a project to immunize six million children in the Philippines. By 2012, only three countries remain polio-endemic—down from 125 in 1988.
Tickets for the event are $25.00, and include BBQ and drinks. Sponsorship opportunities, ranging from $250 to $1000, are available. Contact Patrick Hammond, Past President at doc@hammondchiro.com, to purchase tickets or become a sponsor.
