May 3rd is Heavy Equipment Day!

Heavy Equipment Day!

Heavy Equipment Day is back, and will be held Sunday, May 3, 2015 from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM, at Grant’s Plaza (Western Auto-Marine parking lot.) Children will be allowed to climb aboard pieces of heavy equipment, such as dump trucks, excavators and bulldozers, accompanied by professional operators, and get to operate the gears themselves.

The Juneau Rotary Club, with assistance from the Mendenhall Flying Lions Club and the International Union of Operating Engineers, are bringing back Heavy Equipment Day after a ten-year hiatus. The event costs $5 for a ride on three pieces of moving equipment. Additionally, there will be several pieces of stationary equipment for kids to explore, and a dirt pile stocked with digging toys, that will be free.

The last Heavy Equipment Day was in 2003. Leading this year’s effort is Sarah Griffith. Griffith is a member of the Family Action Committee of the Juneau Rotary Club, and works at Elgee Rehfeld Mertz. She has been receiving valuable guidance from Rob Rehfeld, the event’s original visionary.

This event is made possible thanks in part to the generous donations of local organizations, including the International Union of Operating Engineers and Western Auto Marine.

2014 Vocational Award Winners

For more than 100 years, Rotary International’s guiding principles have been to encourage and foster service and ethics through fellowship, high ethical standards, and the worthiness of all useful occupations – with each being an opportunity to serve society locally and globally. All of these ideals are applied to each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life.

Every year in October, Vocational Service month, the Rotary Club of Juneau, through its Vocational Service Awards, recognizes others in the community who exemplify these basic tenets. Garnered from nominations by club members, the annual awards are presented to individuals, non-profits and businesses who demonstrate Rotary’s high ethical standards and standards of conduct.

Meeting About Satellite Rotary Club

Posted by Brenda Hewitt
As you know we’ve been working on starting a satellite Rotary club for people who need more flexibility in their schedule but want to be a part of Rotary. At this point we are not sure exactly what this club will look like. Many of you have heard from me and my vision for this club, but this is not just for me or about me it’s about “us” and what we want. We need you and your input to mold this into what we feel is best suited for the majority.
