 Susanville Sunrise Rotary learned about the Lassen County Prevention and Education Program from Lisa Bernard. She said the Lifeskills Program teaches children and young adults resistance techniques to stop abuse of alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana, as well as skills for coping with anger and anxiety, and assertiveness skills. She noted that the training has been a turning point for many youth in the community. Excellent presentation - thanks so much, Lisa Bernard!

 Susanville Sunrise Rotary learned what the Lassen County Arts Council offers the community: Step-by-step instructions on how to paint a rooster as part of the council fundraiser or how to paint a Father's Day fish, summer art programs for 6-12 year olds and for 13-18 year-olds, and an Adult Coloring Club. Denise Larimer from the Council also noted that artists can display and sell their work at Lassen County Arts Council. Great presentation!

 Susanville Sunrise Rotary's presenter this morning, Robert Talley, IT Director at Lassen County Office of Education, noted the change in student use of technology. He said that high school students now use their phones in class to fact check and research what they're learning. He also noted that an elementary student who found a mistake in a Wikipedia article and notified Wikipedia was surprised to find that his information was later inserted to replace the incorrect material.  Susanville Sunrise Rotary member Doug Smith, LMUD General Manager, gave a presentation about Lassen Municipal Utility District at the meeting today. He noted that LMUD, formed in 1986, serves mostly residential users at a cost of .05 cents to .07 cents per KWH. About 40% of local cost goes to PGE for service over unreliable lines. He explained that solar users store excess energy with LMUD, but LMUD cannot charge. He identified recently completed projects: Standish line rebuild, and the building of Richmond and Lambert substations. Future projects include a Westwood substation upgrade, Eagle Lake automated metering, and Viewland/NV energy interconnection. Thanks for an excellent and informative presentation, Doug!

 Susanville Sunrise Rotary members welcomed Dr. Marlon Hall, Lassen College President/Superintendent, to the meeting today. Dr. Hall said we are fortunate to have a college with an array of grant-funded programs that meet community needs. 21st Century Skills training and Short Term Certificate programs with multiple entry/exit points, for example, prepare individuals for employment.  Pastor Ben Moore of Valley Christian Center gave a presentation on his community project "Loads of Loves" which provides laundry service for the homeless. He noted that lack of clean clothes is a major problem for the homeless, and the cost of laundry for a family of four is beyond reach for many who are homeless. His congregation has provided 230 loads of clean laundry for approximately 68 homeless families in Susanville. Excellent presentation!

 Susanville Symphony Director Ben Wade (of "Survivor" fame) gave a presentation he recently delivered at the most recent TED conference, saying that Susanville is a very special place because of its attention to the arts. A small rural town, Susanville has a top-rate symphony with outstanding visiting singers and musicians from Reno and elsewhere.

 Susanville Sunrise Rotary organized the first stage of the annual Rotary Music Contest. Susanville Music Contest Winners were the harpist at left, who won first place, and two piano players who won second (center) and third place prizes. The first-place winner moves on to the Area 1 contest, and the winner at that level will perform at the District 5190 contest in May. Congratulations to all of you for your outstanding performances!

PREPARING FOR THE NEW ROTARY YEAR
Club Leadership Assembly
Here we are in March and we are already preparing for the upcoming Rotary year which begins July 1, 2016. Such is the Rotary cycle, which gives each club, and our organization as a whole, the opportunity for new leadership each year.
Coming up first is the CLUB LEADERSHIP ASSEMBLY that it is all about the CLUBS! This is the chance for the Club Leadership Team for the year beginning July 1, 2016, future leaders, and other interested Rotarians to attend, along with their President Elect, to gain information, share ideas and to start the process of planning and goal setting.
We have revamped the session offerings to capture what your Club Leadership Team would like to know. In addition to traditional offerings for Presidents-Elect, Secretaries and Treasurers, we will offer 25 focused sessions. Topics will include: Engaging Emerging Leaders--developing your Club's toolbox; How to Use Rotary's Voice and Visual Image to benefit your Club; New Youth Programs--Most Improved Student; Girls Who Code and Club Learning Chair--putting the new Club position into Action.

 Susanville Sunrise Rotary heard about the Blue Star Moms' Honor Flights for veterans from Christine Boyd (left) and Bill Knox at the meeting this morning. Christine Boyd noted the WWII vets have priority for flights to Washington, D.C. to see various monuments honoring America's veterans and receive closure for their war experience with this one last mission. Bill Knox said he saw Navy planes he flew, as well as the Blackbird SR71, the fastest plane ever built, and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. He also noted how much he appreciated the airport reception upon his return and the gift of a quilt of honor. Thank you, Christine Boyd and Bill Knox for an excellent presentation.

Susanville Sunrise Rotary celebrated its 13th annual Foundation Dinner and Recognition Ceremony on February 25. Paul Harris Fellow Awards were given to Alan Goldberg, Greg Boomer, and Oliver Grosz. President Karen Grosz presented special Paul Harris Fellow Awards to community members Tony Jonas and Tim Purdy for their work to make Lassen County's History alive for everyone to appreciate.
 Past District Governor Wyn Spiller delivered the keynote speech emphasizing The Rotary Foundation's work to eradicate polio around the world. She also noted that our club currently leads all other clubs in the district in Foundation contributions.

Susanville Sunrise Rotary received an update on city economic development from City Manager Jared Hancock, who thanked the club for its generous donation to the Roop's Fort project. He said the city has undertaken an aggressive outreach campaign, streamlining the economic development process, which is now about 5 times faster than other communities. The city is now seeing a shift to housing, largely because of the good reputation of the high school, hospital, and technical infrastructure. The city has secured significant funding from state and federal agencies, allowing for attention to projects that have needed attention. Excellent presentation - thank you, Jared Hancock!

Susanville Sunrise welcomed Lassen College President/Superintendent, Dr. Marlon Hall, who said it is the college aim to bring the community to the college and the college to the community, making Susanville a cultural and education leader. The club received an invitation to the upcoming Louis Price (former singer with The Temptations) and Ken Polson concert at Lassen College next Friday, Feb 19. Cost is $30.

Susanville Sunrise presenter Bill McCabe, Superintendent of Lassen Union High School District spoke of successes, challenges, needs, and opportunities at today's meeting. He said test scores were up last year, FBLA was named a regional program and students went to the national speech contest and placed, FFA was named a regional program and an LHS teacher of excellence was recognized, the district was in the top 20% in a new state testing structure, and the district has added a mental health counselor and plans to undertake random drug testing. Susanville Sunrise Rotary had a presentation from Depot 6 representatives Christi Choo and Shelly Miller. Members of the Depot 6 group patrol the area surrounding the Susanville Depot, residents know each other and meet to share information such as installing motion lights and security cameras on their property. Susanville Sunrise Rotary enjoyed an informative presentation from Joanne Darlington, WorkAbility and TPP Coordinator at Lassen County Office of Education. She noted that several of our club members now have her former students at their work sites. Billington Ace Hardware is one success story of several, with a former WorkAbility student having successfully worked in Susanville before joining the military. Other club employers with WorkAbility students include Tractor Supply, Morning Glory Dairy, and Plumas Bank. Thank you for a great presentation, Joanne Darlington!

Susanville Sunrise Rotary is participating in a Reno Rotary Global Grant project to refurbish a building and establish an orphanage for disabed children in Colon, Panama. Halls are being prepped and painted, roof tiles being placed; a new elevator has been acquired and ready to be installed.

Susanville Sunrise Rotary heard today from Colton Keith about his Eagle Scout Project. A member of Troop 405, Colton plans to provide 10 Little Free Libraries for surrounding communities that have no public library and cannot use Susanville's library. He has plans for construction of the little libraries, placing them in public spaces in communities such as Doyle, Westwood, Janesville, selecting woodworkers to participate in construction, and acquiring permits. His target deadline: before school starts in August. Well done, Colton! We look forward to seeing your project develop.

Susanville Sunrise Rotary learned today from Lisa Bernard of the Chamber of Commerce that Susanville and the rest of Lassen County will benefit from being among 50 communities selected as a quarterfinalist for America's Best Communities. The community will receive $50,000 and its proposal will advance to the next level. The goal of the competition is to re-vitalize small towns. Each town had to submit an economic development proposal, and Susanville was the only town in California selected as quarterfinalist. Thanks, Lisa, for an informative and exciting presentation!

Susanville Sunrise Rotary presenter Stan Bales, Bureau of Land Management Outdoor Recreation Planner, noted that there are 65+ miles of trails in the Susanville area. Susanville Ranch Park's 1,000 acres are owned and managed by Lassen County and BLM as a shared-use recreation area. Future plans include loop trails surrounding Bald Mountain and 23 miles of paths that will link Fredonyer to the Bizz Johnson Trail. Susanville Sunrise Rotary heard the history of the Susanville Symphony from Ben Wade, symphony conductor, who balanced his daughter Lena on his arm. Community support for the symphony has been strong from the outset, with over 900 people attending performances. Next year the symphony will hold concerts on the green, inviting attendees to bring wine and picnic baskets. One feature of every performance is a history of the music being performed. Well done, Ben Wade!

Susanville Sunrise Rotary welcomed Vicki Reinsel (left) and Mary Morphis (right) of the Lassen Humane Society to the meeting this morning. While the Humane Society is separate from the local Animal Shelter, the two work closely to promote adoption of dogs and cats. Eight years ago Mary Morphis started Pups on Parole, a program that identifies dogs for placement with minimum custody inmates, who then wash, feed, and train the dogs, making the dogs more adoptable. One inmate grew so attached that he adopted the dog upon release and is now a veterinarian; the pup he trained changed his life. Thanks Vicki Reinsel and Mary Morphis for a great presentation and a fabulous program!

Susanville Sunrise Rotary welcomed the Blue Star Moms Jennifer Uruburu, Darla Brown, Berva Treat, and Michele Passwaters to the meeting this morning. President Darla Brown identified a number of projects such as care packages, Main Street banners of soldiers, Honor Flights for older vets to visit Washington, D.C. and see memorials honoring them, and cell phones for soldiers. She said all funds raised go to the veterans. One Blue Star Mom is now considering adopting a veteran horse that served in Afghanistan.

Susanville Sunrise Rotary heard from Kim Keith about outstanding services provided by the Alliance for Workforce Development Youth Program. Individuals 17-21 years old who participate can receive certification and employment. With the best GED program in Lassen County, the Alliance works with businesses to identify skills for hire, and then trains youth to qualify for jobs available. Those in the program work hard for the jobs they obtain. Excellent program from Kim Keith, a Paul Harris Fellow who does exceptional work for the young people in our community - thanks, Kim!

Susanville Sunrise Rotary heard from Sheriff Dean Growden about changes resulting from the Safe Neighborhoods and Schools Act passed by voters. He noted that former drug and burglary felonies are now misdemeanors, and law enforcement responses are radically changed as a result of reduced sentences for new offenders and releases for those in jail for those offenses. Lassen County recently had 42% in jail on narcotics offenses, and now has 0%. Sheriff Growden also spoke about a grant recently awarded for $220,000/year to address good decision-making among school children. Thanks, Sheriff Growden, for an excellent presentation!

Great Food and Fellowship at the 2013 Paul Harris Dinner. This year DG Sam Wilbanks presented new Paul Harris Fellow awards to members Arlin Billington, Cheryl Holmes, Oliver Grosz, and Gary Felt. And special Paul Harris Fellow awards went to Kerri Cobb and Caleb Hubbard. Paul Harris Fellow awards go to members who have contributed $1000 to the Rotary Foundation. We can be proud that in the 10 years of Susanville Sunrise's existence, we have collectively given over $110,000.
