The Rotary Club of Kenora’s annual Paul Harris Evening was held virtually last night, and it was an opportunity for the club to honour members of our community for their outstanding contributions to Kenora and beyond.
This year’s recipients of Honourary Paul Harris Fellowship Awards were:
Garry Socholotuk - Special Olympics
Vicki Hawkins - Special Olympics
Olivia Whiddon - Arts;
Diane Pochailo -Lake of the Woods Regional Community Foundation, Hospital Foundation, and Dragon Tamers.
The Honourary Fellowship is Rotary’s most prestigious honour and is awarded in appreciation for service that exemplifies the humanitarian and educational objectives of Rotary International.
Paul Harris founded Rotary with three business associates in Chicago in 1905. The fellowship program was established in 1957 to honour Harris and donors to the Rotary Foundation are recognized, when their cumulative contributions reach a total of $1,000 American. These donors are awarded the Paul Harris Fellowship in recognition of their significant commitment to the work of Rotary International.
Since 1990, the Rotary Club of Kenora has chosen to honour individual citizens in Kenora, who have made a significant contribution in our club and in our local and global community in the spirit of Rotary — “Service Above Self” — with the award.
Eight Rotarians and a Rotary spouse were also presented their new Paul Harris Fellowship or a Multiple Paul Harris Fellowship on Monday by club president Steve Walker and District 5550 Governor Gailmarie Anderson.
Rotary Foundation Chair Gord LeMaistre said, “The Rotary Club of Kenora is honoured and proud to recognize citizens in our community for their significant humanitarian efforts in making Kenora a better place to live for all citizens.”
Jennifer Jones of Windsor will become the first woman nominee for Rotary International President, and she said, “In order to live in a world you would like, you have to help build it.”
This is going to be a lot of laughs! Everyone deserves that after the last year--and this is a way to have a fundraiser to make sure those in need in our community continue to be supported! Invite your friends...let's make this a sellout!
The Rotary Club of Kenora, in partnership with the City of Kenora and the MMIWGT2S Memorial Committee, will develop the Rotary Peace Park along First Avenue South. The park, which is still in the planning stages, will include a beautiful granite monument to honour MMIWGT2S, a peace pole with the words "May Peace Prevail on Earth" engraved in several different languages on it, and a flag pole. Other inclusions are being discussed at this time.
It is the hope that this park will be a quiet resting place for visitors to pause and reflect.
•There are more than 250,000 peace poles around the world in every country in the world – the closest one to Kenora is at St. Vital Park, installed by the Rotary Club of St. Boniface-St. Vital.
•Planting a Peace Pole is a way of bringing people together to inspire, awaken and uplift the human consciousness the world over.
• Peace Poles are now recognized as the most prominent international symbol and monument to peace. They remind us to think, speak and act in the spirit of peace and harmony. Stand as a silent visual for peace to prevail on earth.
NEWS RELEASE: “World Polio Day to be marked with Virtual Walk”
Rotary has been working to eradicate polio for more than 30 years. Our goal of ridding the world of this disease is one step closer to this World Polio Day.
The Rotary Club of Kenora is planning a Virtual Walk on World Polio Day, Saturday, Oct. 24, to raise funds and awareness of the service organization’s top priority for more than 30 years. Rotary members have contributed more than $2.1 billion and countless volunteer hours toward eradicating polio worldwide and helped immunize more than 2.5 billion children in 122 countries from this paralyzing disease. Because of the efforts of Rotary and its partners, nearly 19 million people who would otherwise have been paralyzed are walking, and more than 1.5 million people are alive who would otherwise have died. Today, polio remains endemic only in Afghanistan and Pakistan. But it’s crucial to continue working to keep other countries polio-free. If all eradication efforts stopped today, within 10 years, polio could paralyze as many as 200,000 children each year.
“We are almost there!! We must continue the effort to fulfill a promise to all children for a polio-free world.”
The Nutrition on Weekends Program (N.O.W.) is receiving incredible support!
It has been a busy spring for Kenora Rotary and facilitating the Nutrition on Weekends (N.O.W.) Kenora program during the COVID-19 pandemic. We were able to increase our assistance to those who rely on school nutrition programs when school programs are not accessible. The Rotary Club of Kenora in partnership with the Northwestern Health Unit and local schools, the N.O.W. Program increased the number of bags being delivered (as many as 350 a week) and the size of those bags (5-7 days worth of breakfasts, snacks, and lunches).
Thanks to all those who volunteered to assist with the program. A version of the program will continue this summer with the health unit handling all finances, Rotarian Stacey Szajewski has volunteered to continue shopping and organizing volunteers for packing, and schools are continuing distribution.
Rotarians from across the District (Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Northwestern Ontario) will meet on-line to listen to top-notch speakers and get updates on Rotary.
The in-person meetings scheduled for Kenora have been cancelled for this conference due to the coronavirus, but we've come up with a solution that should work, and give our district a chance to come together to share ideas and learn from some excellent guest speakers!
There are ways to support the Nutrition on Weekends (NOW) Kenora program during the unprecedented situation due to the coronavirus pandemic. The N.O.W. Program has been managed by Rotary for the past 2 school years and will continue, with assistance from the Northwestern Health Unit and local schools.
Donations to the COVID-19 Community Response Fund from the Kenora Lake of the Woods Community Foundation (www.klwcf.ca) may be directed to the NOW Program. All funds donated will stay here in the region and are being distributed on April 17. Please indicate in the Message section that your donation is to be allocated specifically to NOW. A tax-deductible receipt will be issued.
The Northwestern Health Unit is also accepting donations for NOW and will issue a charitable receipt. Your cheque should be made to the Northwestern Health Unit and indicate on the Memo line that it is for NOW Kenora. The address is 210 First Street North, P9N 2K4. Please address it to the attention of Chelsea Socholotuk.
Our Rotary Club appreciates all the support received from our community.
The Rotary Club of Kenora is fundraising to help alleviate child poverty in our community! The N.O.W. Program has been managed by Rotary for the past 2 school years and will continue, with assistance from the Northwestern Health Unit and local schools.

Rotary Club of Kenora’s Nutrition on Weekends (NOW)
The Rotary Club of Kenora’s Nutrition on Weekends (NOW) Kenora pilot project is officially underway.
After a couple of weeks of grocery shopping and stocking our pantry, a group of Rotarians and friends gathered Thursday afternoon, March 21, to package the first weekend’s bag for each of the 17 participating children at King George VI School.
Each child receives two breakfasts, two lunches and two snacks each weekend. The challenge is to provide as healthy a food choice as possible, accessible (easy to open for example) and at reasonable cost. The first bag included a cold cereal, a hot cereal (instant oatmeal) and two fruit choices (apple sauce and two mini mandarin oranges) for breakfast, a beef vegetable soup, chicken salad and crackers kit, can of ham, soda crackers, cereal sticks, carrot sticks for lunch options, and a granola bar and cheese and breadsticks for snack options. There were dips and peanut butter packets included to utilize with different options.
Rotarian Carolyn Hudson provides an emotional thank you to Gord & Deb LeMaistre for the update provided to the Club on their recent trip to Guatemala to oversee Ripple Effect projects. Help the Rotary Club of Kenora create an Urban Forest in the City of Kenora, Canada! Canada is celebrating 150th Anniversary, Rotary in Kenora is soon to celebrate 100 years of serving our community and beyond. To celebrate, we'd like to plant a forest and raise some funds to continue doing good in the world!
For a donation of $10, you can be a part of making our dream a reality, and have a tree seedling planted in your honour!
Red Pine trees grow quite quickly in our Northern climate, and are disease resistant. The Rotary Club of Kenora's President, Gord LeMaistre is a Registered Professional Forester with 40 years experience in the forest industry. He has planted thousands of trees and will ensure that the seedlings are planted correctly in a location conducive to the success of the forest.
Our Rotary Club works hard to improve living conditions for people around the world and an urban forest in our city would be a way for us to thank our community for all the support they have given over the past nearly 100 years so that we may help the less fortunate.
First planting will take place Sunday May 28, 2017. Only 200 seedlings are available for purchase.
Thank you for supporting our efforts to make our world a better place for everyone!

The Rotary Goodwill Geyser has been refurbished by the Rotary Club of Kenora!
The old rotting platform has been replaced with a new one, constructed by Dock's 'n Lifts, and a new shroud has been installed around the spigot. The shroud has cutouts of the City of Kenora's "Boating Capital of Canada" logo, alternating with the Rotary International Wheel logo. All the chains and weights holding the platform in place were also replaced with new ones, so now the geyser shoots straight up, as it was meant to!
Great work by our Rotarian volunteers! Showing again that we have a wealth of talent and skill in our club!!

The South Pacific Island nation of Fiji was hit by the devastating Category 5 storm, Cyclone
Winston, on Feb. 20 & 21. With winds of 320 kms/hr and storm surges up to12 meters high, it cut a path of destruction through the central islands of the Fijian archipelago. Close to 350,000 people (1/3 of the population) were negatively affected and 42 killed.
It has been logistically challenging to reach the remote islands of Fiji, which consist of some 330 islands spread across 120,000 sq. kms of the South Pacific. Based in the capital city of Suva, our ShelterBox response has so far concentrated on the Eastern and Northern Division Islands. We have delivered our aid to the widely dispersed islands working with the Fijian Military, the New Zealand military and Sea Mercy ( a Pacific Ocean aid organization), who provided air and sea transport for us.
Because of the dispersed nature and large numbers of islands affected, we split our ShelterBox Response Teams into small groups in order to reach more islands. My ShelterBox Response Team, consisting of Mark van Alphen (The Netherlands) and myself, traveledapproximately 350 kms on board the New Zealand naval vessel, the Canterbury, to the remote island of Vanua Balavu to deliver our shelterboxes to families who had lost their homes. We lived on board the Canterbury for a week while it was anchored off Vanua Balavu, traveled each day with the boxes by landing craft to the island and distributed our aid in vehicles provided by the Fiji government with assistance from the Fiji military.

Here is the Norman Park Plan as presented by Scatliff+Miller+Murray. The Kenora Rotary Splash Park is #12 on the list, and is the blue area just in front and left of the washrooms and behind the main beach area.
The Rotary Splash Park Committee has been looking at ways to raise funds for Rotary's Centennial Project, the Kenora Rotary Splash Park. The park will be built in Norman Park, and construction will begin as soon as the funds have been raised.
The Buy-a-Brick Program offers the opportunity for persons or businesses to honour a loved one, advertise their business or make a statement and support the splash park through a tax deductible donation.
I have attached the order form with more information. We are asking you to please support our fundraising efforts by purchasing a brick and also by sharing this form with your contacts.
Thanks for your support of this great Rotary Club of Kenora project!
