Checking in with Cops for Kids with CancerWe were honored to have Bob Faherty from Cops for Kids with Cancer remind us why his organization touches our hearts each year. He and Officer Green from the Hull Police Department showed us many pictures of local recipients of the $5,000 check they have been awarded. Most are very young, deserving children who should be concentrating on childhood activities rather than doctor and hospital visits. Our club was very happy to give Bob a check for $5,000 from our annual car show. We are looking forward to giving another check to a family next year! A special thanks to Officer Green and the entire Hull Police Department. Without them the car show would not be possible as they volunteer their time year after year for this worthy event. |

Razia spreads her sunshine!
Razia with our club at the Scituate Rotary Club meeting in Scituate, MA. Tonight we saw Razia Jan, a favorite speaker of our club. She is the principal fundraiser, mother, educator and trusted confidant of girls and young women at her school in Afghanistan. Razia is a fervent supporter of the US military and has helped them gain the trust of people in small villages in Afghanistan. We saw a video of the girls in their school, using the computer, playing with others and being educated, a task that previously seemed impossible for them. It was great to see the same gentleman that she showed us three years ago, who didn't want her to teach girls, talking about how wonderful it is that their daughters can read as they don't have to go to the local mullah anymore to read their mail. The girls face many perils for wanting an education in Afghanistan and it was wonderful to see them so happy. We were able to raise $1500 for her efforts which will help 5 girls be educated for a year. Razia expects to graduate her first class in 2015 and that will be a special day. She hopes to put in place extended education as the young woman most likely will remain in their village. Thank you Razia for spreading your enthusiasm and helping to make a difference in the world! |

Installation and talk by Chad FoxWe had a great meeting tonight as we installed Boyd Fulton as a new member! Welcome Boyd. I know we can work together to make Hull a better place.
Steve Lynch is in Australia fundraising for the third individual who will have surgery in December and....he has helped the project reach our goal! Steve and an Australian who has made significant contributions to the project, Pat Hendy, had a fundraiser at a local theater and raised $3,000 to end that part of our fundraising. Om from Udaipur will be the third recipient of surgery in December. We are still looking for two airline tickets to India for the doctor and his wife. To this end Steve has written a number of letters to airlines and I have inquired to The Tye Foundation that Jim O'Brien mentioned when he visited our club, but nothing has come through yet. If anyone has any connections please let us know!
Have a great week everyone and see you next week at the Paragon Grille. Laura |

We had a really nice meeting last night. Sue Shedd was our guest speaker and talked about her Rotary Scholar year in England. This is one of the ways the money we give to The Rotary Foundation is spent! |

Water facts and conservationThis week Nancy Wells spoke to us about water issues around the world and what we can do to preserve this precious commodity for the future. Did you know that it takes 1 to 2.5 gallons of water to make plastic and twice that amount to make a water bottle? A good reason to ban disposable water bottles! We were amazed to see how much water it takes to make the products we use. Nancy provided us with 3 important steps to improve conservation going forward: 1) Reuse/recycle and reduce consumption, 2) find ways to sustain our finite water resources and 3) work with nature, not try to master it. Good advice for us all.
