About 70+ club members and family members ( including children & grandchildren ) gathered on a HOT July afternoon to play corn hole - with a hotlycontested, competitive final round - and enjoy dinner together under the Fairgrounds canopy.
The focus of the regular meeting today was building member engagement by ensuring members know what the various committees do. Like speed dating, attendees spent 5 minutes at up to 6 of the tables representing club committees and their work.

Kari gave figures defining the extent of the problem in the area as well as definitions of what is involved in relevant situations and how to recognize them. She also thanked the Club for its support of the program over the years.

Longtime Rotarian Darrell Brubaker passed away earlier in January 2020
Rich Ball gave a moving eulogy for Darrell who had the distinction of being the only Rotarian in the Club to have been President on two separate occasions. He had been a member of the Club since 1981. Rotarians all send their condolences to Darrell's friends and relatives
In the Fellowship segment of the meeting retired minister Ted Nutting had to explain how he almost managed to drown his first baptism victim when he was a new Minister! It also caused him to choose to transfer from the Baptist to the Methodist faith as there was less water involved in the baptism process!
Our weekly presentation was given by Branko Kosovic and concerned aspects of his group's work on the effects of weather variation on the action and effectiveness of wind turbines.

John Buser and Drew Blass gave a presentation on the TPC golf course in Berthoud Colorado. Presentation included statistics on the Korn Ferry tour and how many PGA players come from the tour. The course plays from 4,000 to 7,400 yards and is located in the heart of the 800 acre Heron Pointe development.

Entertainment for Rotarians and guests was provided by members of the Loveland Opera Theatre; Keyboardist, Patrick Lee; Soprano, Phoenix Gayles; Mezzo-Soprano, Dana Kinney; Tenor, Joshua Zabatta; and Baritone and Stage Director, Tim Kennedy. The program consisted of a selection of songs by the Gershwin Brothers which was enthusiastically received by the audience.
John Stewart, one of the major organizers of the Rotary Duck Race at the Corn Roast Festival in August, presented a check for the proceeds of the event ($37,000 this year!!) to Suzanne Peterson, of the Loveland Rotary Club Foundation. Julie Johnson Haffner helped with the celebration of the success of the event.

These four Rotarians were celebrated as "Triple Crown" contributors to the Rotary International Foundation. Awardees were Sathi Bunyan, Mo Heth, Phil Ashcraft, and Lynn Hammond. The awards were presented by Past DG Chuck Rutenberg.
Our Student Achiever for November was Colby Finnigsmier from Thompson Valley HS. He was recommended by his Counselor at the school, Amber Bucy, and the presentation was made by Rotarian George Stevens. Also present at our meeting, to help in the celebration, were Colby's parents and grandparents.
Belva Bethel, from Lincoln ES, was our Teacher of the Month for November. She was nominated by her colleague, at Lincoln ES, Haley Dreweck. Belva's mother was present at the meeting, also. The award was presented by Rotarian Dick Bradsby.

Rotarian Dr. Bob Tello gave an update on the global situation regarding polio eradication. While much progress has been made around the world there are still several countries with outbreaks of paralyzing polio.
Our speaker was Kyle Whitaker of "Northern Water" who described some of the complicated system of providing water to Colorado (and surrounding States) Farmers/Ranchers, Residents and Businesses.

The "100th Anniversary Minute" was presented by Nicole Whitenight and it covered the major developments from the 1980s and 1990s. She zeroed in on the admission of ladies to Rotary which happened in the late 1980s. She named some ladies who were early Loveland Rotary Club members and, in particular, mentioned Betsy Burns who was our first lady President from 1994 to 1995!
In his final moments as President, Karl gave a brief speech thanking all Rotary members who have contributed to the smooth running of the Club Programs over the year of his presidency.

Dave Mills was honored as 2019 Rotarian of the Year for the Loveland Colorado club. Dave has done many things to help the community, but none greater than his impact on literacy. Check this out:
Overall, $530,000 has been raised to provide Chromebooks or iPads; one for every two students in grades Kindergarten through 5 in the Thompson School District. The project bought 1,378 Chromebooks, 297 iPads, 73 charging carts and 1,584 headphone sets. Students, who use the literacy software for 30 minutes every day, are 20% more likely to be on grade-level in reading. Thanks Dave and CONGRATS
Gordon Cisar gave a presentation on drinking water conditions in other countries. Gordon described helping 75 families get drinking water in a village in Nepal
The weekly presentation was given by Pat Gannon regarding adult learning. The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute is a part of CSU's Online Department. More than 900 Northern Colorado over 50 (many retired) adults attend the Institute taking a variety of classes.

Scholarship winner, Chloe Vair, makes the first cut in the donated sponsor cakes as a kick-off to the 2019 Duck Race effort. The Duck Race proceeds have been used to provide funds for the Literacy Project in the Thompson School District. Looking on are teachers Sarah Beal and Courtney Looney as well as Jerry Westbrook and President Karl and an unknown yellow creature.
The two donated cakes were thoroughly enjoyed by Rotarians and guests later in the Weekly Meeting.

Speaker Don McGrath gave a presentation on how his group is helping Veterans to improve their options for obtaining a satisfying career after leaving their military service.
The Student of the Month, Jonathan Walker, is presented by club member, Bill Eads. Jonathan was nominated and introduced by, Dr. Bernadine Knittel, a counselor from Thompson Valley High School. He was accompanied by his mother, Holly Walker, and sister, Abigayle Walker. Jonathan earned a 4.0 GPA. Following an injury while wrestling for his school as a sophomore he refocused his goals and excelled academically. He will be going to college this Fall. He was presented with a plaque commemorating his achievement in remembrance of David R & Virginia D. Pulliam along with a check for $500.00 to help fund his future educational goals.
The Teacher of the Month award was presented to Denise Hart, Carrie Martin Elementary School' Denise was presented by club member, Nita Roy, and introduced by her school principal, Dr. Alex Martin. She was accompanied by her husband, Dustin Hart. She had been a teacher for 14 years and is described as an inspiration for her students and colleagues. Denise was presented with a plaque commemorating her award in remembrance of David R & Virginia D. Pulliam. She received a check for $500.00 and a gift certificate for 1 night stay at the Loveland Embassy Suites which includes a gourmet breakfast. Congratulations to Denise.
The club also celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Loveland Rotary KidsPak Recognition Lunch. Through the KidsPak program 625 hungry students are assured of getting enough nutrition every week. Approximately 20,000 bags of food are provided annually. The project is directed by club member, Tom Carrigan, with lots of help from his wife, Corinne Carrigan, and numerous other volunteers and donors such as Ilan Levy, owner of Exodus Moving and Storage for making sure the food deliveries are made to all 42 Thompson School District schools. Subaru of Loveland has donated $197,839.00 over the past years. Other sponsors include King Soopers Grocery, Safeway, Walmart, Hays Market, Thompson Education Association, Thompson School District and Bank of Colorado. Volunteers in the program put in more than 10,000 hours in 2018!
The Loveland Rotary Clock -- paid for by generous contributions -- is now in place in Downtown Loveland (in the new Foundry Project area.)
John Turnage gave a presentation on the activities and plans of the Club's Program Committee. He indicated that the Committee has the majority of program planning complete into late 2019.
Ex-District Governor Bill Emslie introduced his guest, Sudip Koirala. They are working on a plan to assist in re-building a school in Nepal that was damaged or destroyed by an earthquake.

Club member John Turnage introduced our speakers for the meeting, Steve and Todd Orlander of Orlander Farms. The business has been in the family for 5 generations. Steve told the club of the crops grown on the 1,500 acre Loveland, Colorado farm. A big part of the operation is a business, Root Shooting Malting. The focus is growing the finest grains to give brewers and distillers high quality taste in every glass of beer or spirits. Son Todd told us the equipment used in the process is not made in the US and must be procured in Germany. Efficiency is brought to the operation through the use of modern day GPS which saves time and money in planting and harvesting all the various types of grain. The Student of the Month, Angel Valle Gayton from Loveland High School, was introduced by club member, Chris White. Angel was accompanied by his mother, Arceila Gaton-Pina, and Counselor Sarah Moorehead. Angel is a very good student who takes several AP classes and has offers to attend the University of Colorado and the University of Oregon. His teacher, Brett Cain, described him as very involved in school activities although it did take a couple of years for Angel to become accustomed to the academic routine. Angel was awarded a plaque in commemoration of his being chosen as Student of the Month along with a $500.00 check.
Our Teacher of the Month, Beth Fraley, was introduced by club member, Jeff Swanty. Beth is a second grade teacher at Berthoud Elementary School. She was described by fellow teacher, Melissa Wilson, as an inspiration force for both her students and all of her teaching colleagues, Beth was accompanied by School Principal Melanie Patterson, and teachers Megan Mahaffy & Melissa Wilson. She was awarded a commemorative plaque in honor of her being chosen as Teacher of the Month, a $500.00 check and a free night at the Embassy Suites Hotel of Loveland. Congratulations to Beth.
John Blankinship shared a presentation on Apollo 11 and the Saturn 5 rocket that propelled Apollo into space -- members were fascinated! Brought back a lot of memories of "Where were you when ..."

Rocket to the Moon; Rotary Clock; Meeting of April 16, 2019
Tom Satterly, is in charge of facilities management at CSU. He has been in this position for the past 3 years. He described expansion and building projects underway on the campus as well as new projects in various stages of planning. Some of the projects include Johnson Family Equine Hospital, a $41.7 million development. CSU has a world renowned Veterinary School. In partnership with the University of Colorado School of Medicine, CSU is building a new facility for expanding the CU Medical School programs to Fort Collins campus area. In 2020 11 medical students will be on site. Tom holds a Bachelor and Masters degree in engineering as well as an MBA. Following his informative presentation there was an active Q&A session.

John Barrow on the left received his first award as did Jeramiah Harris who is not pictured, Mary Bahus-Meyer, Community Coordinator, Anatomy in Clay Centers, introduced the speaker, Jennifer Hellier, Ph.D. Dr. Hellier is a board member for the center and works extensively with the Anatomy in Clay Centers in the U.S. and abroad. Dr. Jennifer Hellier shows some of the anatomical models she uses in her work. Her background includes an undergraduate degree in Biomedical Engineering, a Masters & Doctorate in Anatomy & Neurobiology. During the summer months in 2017 & 2018 Dr. Hellier traveled to Tanzania in East Africa to teach the teachers. The educational system there is quite different than here in the U.S. She described the differences in detail especially the fact that local customs don't encourage tactile learning strategies. Through the use of the clay anatomical sets she says the Tanzanian teachers learn quickly and pass the process on to their students.
