RD 9780 and ANZCA - Changing Futures in Indonesia with InterplastThrough the funding provided by RD9780 and ANZCA, in October 2017, Interplast welcomed Indonesian anaesthetic registrars Dr Rizki Subing and Dr Arinanda Hayu for their month-long training placement based in Ballarat in regional Victoria from the 8 Oct -10 Nov 2017. Vaiola Hospital Tonga Program 24 years on! In 1991, a young Tongan Anaesthetic registrar, Talia’uli Afeaki, spent 18 months training in Ballarat Health Services. He visited our club (the Rotary Club of Ballarat West), and explained a little about his country, and the difficulties he faced in lack of equipment and in a generally impoverished health care system. At one of our club meetings (November 2016), RN John Macdonald PHF, International Project Officer for St John of God Hospital Ballarat reviewed the responses of St John of God Hospital Ballarat, (and the Rotary Club of Ballarat West, the Rotary Foundation, RAWCS (then referred to as FAIM) and clubs throughout the state and internationally) over the 24 years since a visit to Vaiola by Dr John Oswald and himself in 1992

Interplast Visit by Indonesian Anaesthetic registrarsMost Rotarians are aware of the
 great work that Interplast does surgically, changing children’s lives with the exhibition of plastic surgical skills. But the truth is that by using these techniques to help develop our neighbour’s health system, not only are there opportunities for compassionate surgery, but real gains in the development of capacity follow. Following annual Interplast trips to Indonesia since the early 90's, the Anaesthetic Department of Ballarat Health Services has been working with the Anaesthetic department of Dr Soetomo Hospital in Surabaya, Indonesia, to provide an annual four-week program of Continual Professional Development of two of their most senior registrars each year since 2004

Vanuatu Central Hospital Suction System The Installation of a reticulated hospital suction system into Vanuatu Central HospitalA project of the Rotary Club of Ballarat West.
In 2014, Ballarat Health Services was expanding. The Hospital Suction generator which had been installed only in 2004, and which provided reticulated suction throughout the hospital, was no longer large enough to service the new hospital.
The hospital purchased new equipment, and offered this very large system, which was hardly run-in, to the Rotary Club of Ballarat West

Dental van to Vanuatu, July 2013The Rotary Club of Ballarat West has set up a professional and free dental service for disadvantaged Ni-Vanuatuan people in Vanuatu.
A RAWCS volunteer dental team consisting of team leader Dr David Goldsmith from the Rotary Club of Ballarat West, Dr Rudy Jansen from RC Ballarat, Ballarat Dental Group dental assistants Kim Allan and Mel Lampard, and dental equipment engineer and PHF Peter Copp have just returned from a two week visit to Port Vila to set up the project  |
Interplast Eureka Tower Climb date This years event will be held on Sunday November 17th and promises to be even bigger and better than last year! So start getting your mates together and get fit for the big day! 1958 stairs, 89 levels & 300m of vertical elevation! Eureka Climb is open to people aged 12 years and over and with walker and climber categories is open to all fitness levels!Eureka Climb is in the top 20 (amount of stairs) of stair climbs in the world and is host to an Elite Race for some of Australia's best stair climbers.
Eureka Climb will also host an Emergency Services category featuring members from the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB), Ambulance Victoria, Victoria Police, SES, the Coast Guard and other emergency services. Enter a team from your club and/or your office, and have a great day raising yourself 300 metres, and raising funds for Interplast! |

Packing Dental Container for Fiji at DIK in GeelongWORKING BEE FOR FIJI DENTAL VAN We had a successful Ballarat West Rotary Club Working Bee on Sunday 6th January to ready the Trailer Dental Van for the Fiji National University Oral Health Faculty. This is a D9780 RAWCS registered Project. Ballarat West Rotarian Ross Huntington kindly provided a Ute and covered trailer and loaded and drove our considerable stock of stored donations of dental supplies and equipment from Ballarat to the DIK depot in Geelong as well as helping with the cleaning Two dental nurses, Maddi Taylor and Kim Allen gave up their day off to volunteer to help load the trailer and clean the van inside and out. |

street of Nuku’alofa in Tonga, sirens blasting, heading for the Vaiola Hospital. I had collapsed following a mismatch of medication, exercise and hot weather. I was recovering as the ambulance filtered through the crowded streets, but welcomed eventual arrival at the Vaiola Hospital Emergency department. 
ratulations to our own Lidia Aitken on being presented with the Mayor’s Award for Ballarat Senior Citizen of the Year. Lidia was honoured with her award on the 28th of September at a special presentation in the Town Hall.
She said she was ‘gob smacked’ when her name was read out, believing there were other more worthy recipients on the list.
“I just never, ever expected it,” she said softly.

A Twenty Five Year History of Student exchange with Sonora USA
It has been twenty-five years since The Rotary club of Ballarat West had here first short term student from Sonora USA.
The Rotary Club of Ballarat West has just notched up a major mile stone with its Murray to Moyne Bike Ride team. It has now raised over $100,000 over thirteen years, a tribute to its main driver, Rtn. Wayne Cooper. The club at its recent change over dinner recognized Wayne's role in this and in other endeavours such as his ongoing contribution to the Sonora Exchange and to fundraising by awarding a Paul Harris Fellowship in his name.
