A Dental team form the Rotary Club of Ballarat West, D9780 presented a Pantomime promoting dental health in schoolchildren in Vanuatu. They visited 16 kinder-gardens and junior schools in this Pacific Island which is only four and a half hours flight time from Melbourne,  and thrilled these young children with a visual presentation of how easy it can be to look after your own oral health, and the terrible things that might happen if you don't clean your teeth!  Aarrgghhh!

Pantomime Show  -  "Ratbag and Scatterbrain learn about their teeth"
A story line taken from a book by Katie Lester was scripted by Jamie Brown for 6 actors. Costume design by Joan Goldsmith and direction by Jamie Brown. This was taken to 16 kindergartens and junior schools on Efate island Vanuatu in April 2016. (as well as played to the discriminating audiences of the Rotary Cubs of Ballarat West and Port Vila!) Cast included Rotarians David Goldsmith (Ballarat West) and John Hazledine (Maryborough) and dentists Scott Sherwell and Rami Kaur, and dental nurses Hannah Watson and Robyn Sherwell, and Ni-Van oral health care worker Morinda Toara in Port Vila.
  • Performed in 16 primary schools in Vanuatu and at the Rotary Clubs of Ballarat West and Port Vila
  • The shows featured a humorous Oral Health and dietary message which was conveyed in local Bislama language as well as in English.
  • All children were given toothbrushes and toothpaste kits and shown how to use them
  •  Learned a tooth brushing song which they sang with huge gusto!
  •  The script is being translated into Bislama and the theme may be taken to other islands in Vanuatu by Morinda, her fellow Presbyterian Church of Vanuatu (PCV) health care workers and others.
  • Possibility of taking this concept into schools in Australia to assess its suitability there too
  • Offers a much more exciting and involving way of getting a health message across than traditional oral methods.
  • Good publicity for Rotary International and the Rotary Clubs of Ballarat West and Vanuatu
