Lighthouse Stands Proud Through Time

Heading west on the lakefront walking path you are led to the Lighthouse.  Strolling the Lighthouse Commemorative Path and Rotary Lighthouse Park is beautiful reminder of the energy of a Laker.  Like the Lighthouse, Lakers are enduring, resilient and strong, proud and filled with passion.

During the summer months our beautiful lady welcomes visitors with grace and during the quiet of winter she stands strong and proud through passing time for her community.

History of our Lighthouse

To commemorate the 100th birthday of Sylvan Lake, The Rotary Club of Sylvan Lake took on the challenge to rebuild the lighthouse from the ground up and in 2016 the project was complete.

The original lighthouse was in decline and after demolition, Trevor Sigfusson, President of SL Rotary at the time, took on the challenge to rebuild.   Since then, our community has supported the Town of Sylvan Lake and Rotary, as they work together to continue to enhance Rotary Lighthouse Park.

Designed like Peggys Cove Lighthouse, over $240,000.00 was raised through various grants, donations and fundraisers and on Canada Day 2016 the Rotary Lighthouse Park was officially open for visitors.

Giant Cheque Arrives Just In Time

OUR GIANT CHEQUE HAS ARRIVED
AND WE ARE PUTTING IT TO GOOD USE
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rotary Members in Sylvan Lake are putting your donations to work.  Recently members met with representatives of three separate organizations each working hard to better the lives of people in our community.

During the lunch meeting at Sand Castle Steakhouse members heard from Bryan Wilson, representing the Red Deer Hospice Society. The facility provides the feeling of home and gives pain relief, comfort and care for those in their last days of life. Family support is also a big part of the program to assist those losing their loved ones.

There is no cost to the terminally ill or their families for this service and that is why community and personal donations are so important.

Pictured here is Bryan Wilson of the Red Deer Hospice Society accepting a donation of $825.70 from Rotary Club President, Pat O'Brien.

Byan Wilson is also a Rotarian, serving as a member of the Rotary Club of Red Deer East.

BUT WAIT...THERE IS MORE....

Rotarian of the Year

The final act of our President before he passes the gavel is to name the Rotarian of the Year.  As President's Choice, the recipient is announced at the Handover Event.

As our 2022 year came to an end, Matt Toonders was proud to announce Sheila Scrutton as this years winner.

Sheila, who is a newer member to the Sylvan Lake Club, joined and shortly thereafter, took on the job of secretary. Guiding the club with her skills and knowledge of Rotary, Sheila also worked side by side with Matt during his Presidency to ensure the club remained running and as active as possible during lockdown.  This would not be an easy task for most but Sheila handled it with ease.

You will see Sheila out and about at every function or event, always willing to volunteer, no matter what the task and no matter what the weather is like.  She is very deserving of this prestigious and coveted award.

Congratulations Sheila.  Thank you for all your hard work.

My Pronouns Are

Musings of Cindy-Lou...wink

My pronouns are she/hers.
What are yours?
--------------------------------------------

Recently Rotary International made an amazing statement with a mandate of inclusion, diversity and equity for all.

When I applied this statement to our club it is obvious we have work to do.  Mentally and ideally we are an amazing group of open minded, caring people who already follow our new Rotary mandate, but we could do more, myself included.  We are working to expand our membership but what could we do right now?

What more could our club do to support this RI mandate?  This has been my lingering thought for weeks.  During my ponderings I started to notice something very interesting in my correspondence coming from some members of the District Club.  Many are signing their official correspondence with identifying pronouns included.  RESPECT!  I don't even do this.  This gave me an idea.

I hope you consider this as an opportunity to open conversations with staff, friends and family.

We have a Transgender person in our family and I have been story telling and advocating for this generation of people, those who don't fall into the "norm".  Personally, as a Member of Rotary, I am proud to be a part of an organization where I am comfortable to speak our family's truth.  It has been a beautiful journey of science, faith, compassion and understanding. Sadly, there is so much to do, especially with regards to education on a matter most of us find truly uncomfortable to talk about.

What are your preferred pronouns?

If I asked you this question, would you look like a deer blinded by a vehicles headlights. Ummmmm, indecision  Don't feel bad. That was me not that long ago. Even with my knowledge and understanding of the Gender Scale and it's importance to this generation, I found it uncomfortable, or perhaps a better word would be unnecessary.  I found it unnecessary to identify my pronouns.  Why would I have to do that?  I am not transgender, I am just a woman.

I don't fit in the Gender Scale.  Or do I?

Well pondering brings conclusions. Here are mine.

The Gender Scale has changed and the old standard of only male and female no longer exists.   The Scale is like a slide rule, reinvented with diversity and inclusive to all.  I am on the Scale, you are on the Scale. (my Oprah impersonation) Everyone is on the Scale!  Wait....What?

It is true.  Everyone fits in the new Gender Scale.  Unlike the Scale of our forefather's, stiff and regimented, this Scale is different, inclusive to all. This is progress. THIS is a true representation of equality, equity and diversity for all and this Scale was generated by our youth.

The Gender Scale is a reinvention of an antiquated system. It's kind of like the Metric System - still a means of identification, just in a different way.

If that wasn't mind boggling enough, here is another revelation for you to consider.  If you have been using any kind of prefix in your name like Mr. or Mrs., you have been identifying your pronouns all your life, just in a different way.

NOW I GET IT!
