Musings of Cindy-Lou...
My pronouns are she/hers.
What are yours?
--------------------------------------------
Recently Rotary International made an amazing statement with a mandate of inclusion, diversity and equity for all.
When I applied this statement to our club it is obvious we have work to do. Mentally and ideally we are an amazing group of open minded, caring people who already follow our new Rotary mandate, but we could do more, myself included. We are working to expand our membership but what could we do right now?
What more could our club do to support this RI mandate? This has been my lingering thought for weeks. During my ponderings I started to notice something very interesting in my correspondence coming from some members of the District Club. Many are signing their official correspondence with identifying pronouns included. RESPECT! I don't even do this. This gave me an idea.
I hope you consider this as an opportunity to open conversations with staff, friends and family.
We have a Transgender person in our family and I have been story telling and advocating for this generation of people, those who don't fall into the "norm". Personally, as a Member of Rotary, I am proud to be a part of an organization where I am comfortable to speak our family's truth. It has been a beautiful journey of science, faith, compassion and understanding. Sadly, there is so much to do, especially with regards to education on a matter most of us find truly uncomfortable to talk about.
What are your preferred pronouns?
If I asked you this question, would you look like a deer blinded by a vehicles headlights. Ummmmm,
Don't feel bad. That was me not that long ago. Even with my knowledge and understanding of the Gender Scale and it's importance to this generation, I found it uncomfortable, or perhaps a better word would be unnecessary. I found it unnecessary to identify my pronouns. Why would I have to do that? I am not transgender, I am just a woman.
I don't fit in the Gender Scale. Or do I?
Well pondering brings conclusions. Here are mine.
The Gender Scale has changed and the old standard of only male and female no longer exists. The Scale is like a slide rule, reinvented with diversity and inclusive to all. I am on the Scale, you are on the Scale. (my Oprah impersonation) Everyone is on the Scale! Wait....What?
It is true. Everyone fits in the new Gender Scale. Unlike the Scale of our forefather's, stiff and regimented, this Scale is different, inclusive to all. This is progress. THIS is a true representation of equality, equity and diversity for all and this Scale was generated by our youth.
The Gender Scale is a reinvention of an antiquated system. It's kind of like the Metric System - still a means of identification, just in a different way.
If that wasn't mind boggling enough, here is another revelation for you to consider. If you have been using any kind of prefix in your name like Mr. or Mrs., you have been identifying your pronouns all your life, just in a different way.
NOW I GET IT!
