"A TED talk a day keeps the mental cobwebs away!" 

One thousand years ago, the first king of the Ly Dynasty founded Thang Long and the city now known as Hanoi. Thang Long means the "City of Dragon."  Festivities and celebration started from October 1-10.  Hanoi was named one of the "World's Top Destinations 2010".  It has its charm that makes this place a delightful destination, a city of lakes surrounded by parks and walkways. The famous and the biggest of them all is Hoan Kiem Lake where most of the festivities òf the celebration were done. Before the celebration, there were plenty of banners as well as electronic signboards adorning the streets.  On the last day I had to squeeze in to the crowd to take photos of the event.

Through vibrant colours and original technique, Sheila abstractly expresses her love of art in fascinating cityscapes and inviting mountain scenes. Sheila was awarded full membership into the Alberta Society of Artists in 2008 and was the featured artist of the Stampede Rotary Dream Home 2008.

On Thursday, October 14th, we were fortunate enough to welcome viiting Rotary Dignitaries, DG Al Bergsma, and his wife Shirley. DG Al was kept busy with the induction of two new members, the presentation of a Paul Harris Award, and still had time to fill us in on what's going on locally and internationally in the Rotary world.

Dear friends and family,

As most of you know I am planning to shave my head on Thursday  September 30^th at Vincent Massey Junior High School here in Calgary.  I am raising money for cancer research in honour of my Aunt Cari – Cari Petrie – who passed away May 24^th 2010 at the age of 44 after a brave battle against cancer.

My hair will be donated and made into a wig which will be given to someone with cancer. It takes approximately 12 donations and $1200.00 to make a single wig! My goal is to raise $ 1200. I would appreciate your sponsorship.  Even just donating $5 will help, so please donate. If you are donating please contact me and I can add all information to my pledge sheet. Contributions of $20 or more will be receipted automatically. Receipts for donations under $20 must be requested.

A highly active and passionate Rotary Club, our on-the-go small group is made up of about 25 male and female members who meet weekly downtown at the start of the day for a welcoming breakfast.  We are active business people and retirees who choose to ‘give back’ to our communities by fundraising each year to support worthwhile causes both locally and internationally. 

Where do the Funds Go?

Rotary Club of Calgary Sarcee has contributed over $1 million dollars to various local and international charities in the past 11 years.  Locally and internationally, the funds have gone to provide:

• Clothing, Shelter, and Food to Families in Need:          $860,000 
• Education, Training, and Children’s Health Programs:   $180,000
• Administration for Rotary’s Programs:                         $   6,000   (PolioPlus, Microcredit, and Youth Leadership)

In the past 10 years, our Rotary Club of Calgary Sarcee has donated over 1 million dollars to various local and international charities.  We are a small and enthusiastic Rotary Club, with about 20 male and female members who meet weekly downtown at the start of the day for a friendly breakfast.  We are typically active businesspeople and retirees, who choose to ‘give back’ to our communities by fundraising each year to support worthwhile causes. 

Our Club focuses on helping disadvantaged children in our community and worldwide – whether by assisting with immediate and long-term shelter, food, and clothing needs, or with education,  training and health programs for these children.  Our fundraising efforts are often supported by employers who match employee donations. 

We have contributed over $1,045,000 allocated as follows:

-        Clothing, shelter, and food – within Calgary:  $800,000.  Major recipients include: Children’s Village, Children’s Wish Foundation, Community Kitchens, Hull Child & Family Home, Brenda Stratford Home playground, Calgary Street Kids, Salvation Army Children’s Cottage.

-        Clothing, shelter and food – internationally:  $60,000.  Major recipients include: Add-your Light for students in Nepal, Kulika Water project in Uganda for female-headed families, Zambia Rent-to-Own for rural families.

-        Education and training programs – within Calgary:  $105,000.  Major recipients include:  Rotary Challenger Park for Disabled Children, Crime Not to Read, Distress Centre Children’s Help Phone, Third Academy funding for challenged children.

-        Education, training  and children’s health programs – internationally: $75,000.  Major recipients include:  Rotary PolioPlus, Uganda Kulika training project, Libraries for Afganistan females, Rotary Microcredit for female-headed families in Uganda.

-        Administration for Rotary’s Canadian and international programs:  $6,000, including Rotary PolioPlus, Rotary Microcredit, and Rotary Youth Leadership programs.

Emer visited  Halong Bay and asked me to share this with everyone in our club.
He'll be arriving in the Philippines on Dec 18 and will be back Calgary on 08 Jan 2011, so we can look forward to seeing his smiling face (in person) then.

Halong Bay ( Descending Dragon Bay ) is located 173 kms.north of Hanoi. There are 1900 islets most of which are limestone. It was a wonderful experience on Oriental sails having lunch on board with a variety of local foods, cruising the bay and have a close up view of stunning limestone peaks. It was a quiet atmosphere with a temperature of 14 deg.C. Heading further north, we went to a fishing village on floating houses where we had the opportunity to understand more about the fisherman's daily life.
Halong Bay was listed UNESCO World Heritage site since 1994. Vietnam Ministry of Culture designated the bay a " Renowned National Landscape Monument."
