Fosbrookes stand as community pillarsFosbrookes stand as community pillars BY DAVID PARKER, CALGARY HERALD APRIL 9, 2009Anyone who has been to a Flames home game The event requires total member effort from the city's smallest Rotary Club, but Doug has been the big push behind the auction, which has raised a total of around $396,000 for local charities since its inception, as well as returned more than $245,000 to our local art community. Doug is a business consultant with Fosbrooke & Associates, which offers financial advisory services for the past 25 years and specializes in small to medium-sized business with revenues between $300,000 and $5 million. Before moving to Calgary 27 years ago, he had served for 25 years as manager of corporate banking for CIBC in B. C., travelling throughout that province in his last five years there calling on 20 to 25 businesses each week for 40 weeks a year. It provided him with good insight into many types of businesses, their owners and their needs. He does not write business plans; after much discussion, his advice is usually in conjunction with preparing credit applications and financing proposals primarily structured to suit bankers' or term lenders' requirements. The different types of businesses he has helped is astounding -- from the manufacturer of golf range mats to truckers, designers of aviation electronic gear to a company that paints airport runways. Experience, understanding and integrity are paramount in Fosbrooke's type of business and also matter much in the effort he puts into his Rotary commitment. This year's auction takes place at the Red & White Club on May 8 (2009) and, apart from the 50 original paintings, the committee has come up with some unique auction items such as a time share in New Zealand; a trip on the Bow River with the Calgary Fire Department; five days salmon fishing for two at North King Lodge situated between Kitimat, B. C., and the Queen Charlotte Islands; and a deluxe Rocky Mountaineer train ride for two to the coast. The money raised this year will help Hull Child and Family Services to purchase a much-needed 12- passenger van. |

From Our News Correspondent in Hanoi - Emer TubangOne thousand years ago, the first king of the Ly Dynasty founded Thang Long and the city now known as Hanoi. Thang Long means the "City of Dragon." Festivities and celebration started from October 1-10. Hanoi was named one of the "World's Top Destinations 2010". It has its charm that makes this place a delightful destination, a city of lakes surrounded by parks and walkways. The famous and the biggest of them all is Hoan Kiem Lake where most of the festivities òf the celebration were done. Before the celebration, there were plenty of banners as well as electronic signboards adorning the streets. On the last day I had to squeeze in to the crowd to take photos of the event. Regards to everyone in the club. Emer |

13th Annual "Art from the Heart" Fundraiser
Friday, May 6, 2011
Red & White Club
(McMahon Stadium)
Cocktails at 6:00 pm
Dinner at 7:00 pm
The May 6th, 2011 event will be our 13th Annual "Art from the Heart" fundraiser and
the first with a Club Website about the Live Auction art. We know you will like it.
Each year, between 45 and 52 talented local and Alberta artists have donated art
to be auctioned and, over the past 12 years there were 10 artists who contributed
each and every year. The names of these 10 artists should be acknowledged:
The artists are a major reason for our success. On behalf of The Rotary Club of

together to build a better, safer Calgary community for so many of its children and
families.

Rotary Friendship Exchange OpportunitiesThe positive response from Rotarians in this District has lead to two more great opportunities for Rotary Friendship Exchanges (RFE) in 2011! The first is an additional exchange to England and the second is to Taiwan. England – District 1080
In the fall (2010) we canvassed for participants for the Exchange to England's District 1110 next July (2011) and the great response resulted in more interest than we could accommodate. As a result we have organized a second Exchange to England, this time to District 1080 at exactly the same time. This Exchange is partially subscribed but we have room for at least two more couples.
Taiwan – District 3530 This District is located in Taipei City, Taiwan, Republic of China and the Taiwanese District is extending an invitation for a special Rotary Friendship Exchange program linked to the centennial celebration of the Republic of China. The District was invited by their government to participate in the Centennial celebrations and they have responded with a plan to invite 200 Rotarians and spouses from around the world to visit Taiwan between July 2011 and March 2012. General information can be found on the RI website at the following link

Nizar's Daughter, Salimah Walji-Shivji, named to Top 40 Under 40 for 2010Nizar is pleased to report that his daughter, Salimah, has been named to Avenue magazine’s Top 40 Under 40 list for 2010. This is an annual selection of the brightest and most active leaders under the age of 40.
Why she’s the top: Walji-Shivji leads a team that gives legal clinical advice to employees within Alberta Health Services. Her work covers such touchy topics as blood tranfusion consent in instances where the procedure conflicts with a person’s religious beliefs.
The key to her success: “I really enjoy what I’m doing, and knowing I’m making a difference at the ground level.” For the full story and video interview click here. |
