Student of the Month - Ryan Severson (CHS) Feb 2025

Cedarburg High School senior Ryan Severson was recognized as the February Student of the Month by the Rotary Club of Cedarburg-Grafton at its weekly lunch meeting on Feb. 13 at the Peter Wollner American Legion Post.

High School Principal Casey Bowe called Severson a “role model” and an “outstanding representative of C.H.S. and the Rotary Club’s values of service and community building.” Despite enrolling in some of the most challenging courses, Severson maintains an impressive 4.5 GPA. He founded the Fashion Club and is currently developing a website to connect students with tutors, which Bowe said showcases his commitment to innovation and peer support. He is a member of the Principal’s Leadership Team, where he is actively involved in drafting new mission, vision and values statements that will shape the future of C.H.S. He is also president of the National Honor Society and the Global Scholars Program. Outside of the classroom, Severson coaches youth basketball for the recreation department and trains as an accomplished long-distance runner. Severson plans to pursue a career in the field of business and economics.

The Rotary award is given monthly, alternating between Cedarburg and Grafton High Schools, to students who demonstrate hard work through school, employment or other activities.

The students receive a $50 chamber gift check and the Club makes a $50 donation to a charity of the student’s choice. Severson chose SecureFutures to receive his donation. The program empowers teens by giving them the education, tools and mentorship to become financially literate.

Student of the Month - Josstyn Durst (GHS) Jan 2025

Grafton High School senior Josstyn Durst was recognized as the January Student of the Month by the Rotary Club of Cedarburg-Grafton at its weekly lunch meeting on Jan. 30 at the Peter Wollner American Legion Post.

Durst holds leadership roles in a number of school activities. She is the captain of the girl's cross-country team and has competed in the sport all four years of high school. She has also been a member of the high school marching and concert bands for four years and serves as section leader.

“From her freshman to senior years, we could see in Josstyn the evolution of a leader,” said Grafton High School Principal Scott Mantei, calling her “a champion for others.”

As a junior, Durst took over as president of the Amnesty International program, which this year hosted a food drive for Ozaukee families in need. She is also a member of the school's Black Hawk Crew, which guides and supports incoming freshmen as they transition into high school. “This opportunity has definitely taught me a lot about leadership and confidence,” Durst said. Durst, who has taken four advanced placement classes, plans to attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison or the University of Pittsburgh to pursue a career in law and criminology.

2024 Holiday Concert featuring MSO

One of our signature fundraising events is the Rotary Holiday Concert featuring the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra (MSO). Annually, it is held at the Cedarburg Performing Arts Center in December. The MSO is one of the premier orchestras in the country and we are proud to present them during the holidays to perform in front of a sold-out audience every year.

MSO Holiday Concert set up & pack out

Before and after every Rotary Holiday Concert members of the Rotary Club of Cedarburg-Grafton help to unload instruments, chairs, music stands, and the conductor's platform. Immediately after the concert, it is all packed up and put back on the MSO truck.

Because of our efforts to put on quality events and the backing of the MSO program booklet advertisers, the Rotary Club of Cedarburg-Grafton is able to raise funds that support the communities we serve with scholarships to deserving high school seniors and grants to local non-profits.

Student of the Month - Tess Latzl (CHS) Dec 2024

Cedarburg High School senior Tess Latzl was recognized as the December Student of the Month by the Rotary Club of Cedarburg-Grafton at its weekly lunch meeting on Dec. 12 at the Peter Wollner American Legion Post.

Latzl, who is the president of the Best Buddies program at Cedarburg High School, is described by High School Principal Casey Bowe as an “impactful senior leader” who is known for her “well-rounded academic excellence and mature, humble demeanor.”

She has accumulated over 120 hours of documented community service. Under her leadership, the Best Buddies program at CHS this year was presented with the outstanding chapter award given to one high school in every state and was recently highlighted on CBS 58’s “Natalie’s Everyday Heroes” segment. Best Buddies is an international organization dedicated to ending social, physical and economic isolation of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

“As a local and state leader for Best Buddies, Tess advocates for inclusivity and challenges herself and others to embrace acceptance, understanding and striving for excellence,” Bowe said. Additionally, Latzl has volunteered at the annual dinner dance for Mel’s Charities and works with elementary schools on such things as their Kindness Retreat.

Latzl plans to attend UW-Oshkosh in the fall, majoring in both elementary and special education.

According to the DCI website, Cedarburg is one of 75 hosting venues for this international competition.

The Drum Corps International Summer Tour Schedule serves as the foundation for countless memories made by performers and fans alike. A tapestry of tour events across the country over a six-week span, the DCI Tour map is meticulously woven together in order to maximize the opportunities, needs, and preferences of DCI’s many stakeholders — its members, its participating organizations, and more. The 2025 edition will feature more than 75 events in more than 30 states, all building toward the annual DCI World Championships, to be held August 4-9 in Indiana.

Student of the Month - Kaitlin Muecke (GHS) Nov 2024

Grafton High School senior Kaitlin Muecke was recognized as the November Student of the Month by the Rotary Club of Cedarburg-Grafton at its weekly lunch meeting on Nov. 14 at the Peter Wollner American Legion Post.

School Superintendent Jeff Nelson said Muecke was selected for the award for her outstanding achievements in the classroom and beyond. She is currently taking advanced placement courses in calculus, biology and German and holds a 3.992 grade point average. As part of the Grafton School District’s Vision 2030 curriculum designed to prepare students to be career and life-ready, Muecke is also taking classes in biomedical innovations as well as auto service.

Outside the classroom, she is an accomplished student-athlete, serving as captain of her varsity volleyball team the past two seasons. She is a three-year varsity letter winner and a 3-time second-team all-conference nominee. She volunteers as an assistant coach for the John Long Middle School volleyball program, and last year led the 7^th grade A team to a 13–1 season record. She also participates in the high school’s Best Buddies program and volunteers as a sideline photographer at all football games.

Kaitlin plans to attend an in-state university, majoring in either radiologic technology or engineering.

Empty Bowls - What A Treat!

For a change of pace, we informally gathered for the 13^th Annual Empty Bowls fundraiser hosted by the good folks at Family Sharing to benefit their food pantry. We sampled all kinds of soups made by local establishments including Italian Wedding Soup, Chicken Dumpling, Chicken Santa Fe, Vegan Curry, Clam Chowder, Creamy Loaded Baked Potato, and Cream of Vegetable. And just when you thought you couldn’t possibly balance any more bowls on your cafeteria tray, our feast was topped off with Out & Out Mac ‘N Cheese.

The hall was decorated with 47 star-shaped helium balloons representing the 47 locations throughout Ozaukee County that Family Sharing serves by providing food, clothing and household necessities. Our own Julie Hoover, the director of Family Sharing, noted that when she went to pick up the balloons on a VERY windy Halloween, she was nearly air-lifted across the Great Lakes. Smartly, she waited a day to complete the errand and survived to tell us all about it!

Thank you, Family Sharing, for feeding us so that you can feed others!

Student of the Month - Owen Frohmader (CHS) Oct 2024

OWEN FROHMADER NAMED OCTOBER ROTARY STUDENT OF THE MONTH

Cedarburg High School senior Owen Frohmader was recognized as the October Student of the Month by the Rotary Club of Cedarburg-Grafton at its weekly lunch meeting on Oct. 17 at the Peter Wollner American Legion Post.

Principal Casey Bowe said that Frohmader’s talents represent the diversity of C.H.S. students and called him a technical education “standout” who has completed and excelled in every carpentry and metalworking class offered in high school while taking advanced and college-level math courses. His skills are showcased in a sign he built for the C.H.S. Bulldog Café for which he created a welded metal frame and precision-cut metal graphic. The sign is backlit by LED lighting and layered in front of rough, weathered barn wood.

“He is known for being driven, kind, hardworking, broadly intelligent, and immensely talented,” Bowe said.

Frohmader is one of the top high school competitive archers in the nation, earning the title of Wisconsin Shooter of the Year three times and National Shooter of the Year twice. He plans to graduate from high school at the end of this semester and work in the family business while continuing to shoot archery locally and nationally. He will then attend the University of the Cumberlands in Kentucky in the fall of 2025, which is currently ranked #1 in collegiate archery.

Frohmader chose the Kniestedt Foundation to receive his donation. The Foundation is a program that supports veterans and empowers them to have a connection to nature through hunting and shooting.

Adopt-A-River Cedar Creek Cleanup

Changing of the Guard 2024

Rotarians, with their spouse/significant other, gathered under a star-lit night for dinner & ice cream to celebrate Mike Herbrand, Past President 2023-2024. Reigning President, Minal Hahm, did a great job this evening. She started by sharing a moving reflection then stepped it up and toasted President Mike Herbrand for a bit. Minal concluded by revealing that under our outgoing President's term, the following was accomplished:

The Rotary Club of Cedarburg-Grafton raised $124,394! We are very grateful to our sponsors who invest in our community through our club.

We awarded:

Two international grants totaling $5,000

Eleven local grants totaling $19,050

No Empty Bags Service Project

On August 8th, 2024, members of the Rotary Club of Cedarburg-Grafton along with District Governer Peter Bosch and Area Governer Terry Schacht came together to stuff backpack with needed supplies for students attending the Milwaukee Public Schools. This is the 3rd year the Club has supported these deserving students.

2024-25 Club Board of Directors

The new board of directors for the Rotary Club of Cedarburg-Grafton officially began its duties in July for the 2024-2025 year. The Rotary Club of Cedarburg-Grafton is a service organization with 61 members. Its two major fund-raising events — the Rotary Music Festival in July and the Milwaukee Symphony Holiday Concert in December — raise nearly $100,000 annually to support community projects, local non-profit organizations, and student scholarships.

World Affairs Seminar particpants were treated to a visit to the Quilt Museum

Participants in this year’s World Affairs Seminar were treated to a visit to the Wisconsin Museum of Quilts & Fabric Arts on June 25, 2024, to see the exhibit “25 Million Stitches: One Stitch, One Refugee,” a global art activism project which seeks to raise awareness of the global refugee crisis. The World Affairs Seminar is an international youth initiative of Rotary International District 6270 whose motto is "Peace Through Understanding.” Keynote speaker Jennifer Kim Sohn, curator of “25 Million Stitches,” addressed the teen delegates before they visited the exhibit in Cedarburg, where they also engaged in an art-making activity that helped them explore the challenges faced by refugees.

Annually, the Rotary Club of Cedarburg-Grafton sponsors 2 students at the World Affairs Seminar; one from the Cedarburg School District and the second from the Grafton School District. The 2024 World Affairs Seminar theme is Democracy and Governance: Evolving Global Perspectives and was held Saturday, June 22 – Friday, June 28, 2024 at Carroll University in Waukesha, WI. Annually, roughly 300 students from over 30 countries participate.

This year's program gave delegates the opportunity to survey how these important matters are playing out around the world. Attention is be paid to theoretical models of governance, along with the ways that political systems work – and perhaps don’t work – on a day-to-day basis. It is no longer a given that democracy is the final destination for global political development. Such a conclusion will come to have a profound impact on how all global citizens think about such things as elections, political parties, rights, and responsibilities. The question of democracy, in other words, has yet to be fully answered. Click on the link above to learn more.

Scholarship Reception: A Night to Be Proud Of

Beaming students and their proud families filled the house at Galiota’s Twelve21 on the evening of Wednesday 5/15/2024 for a reception honoring recipients of more than $40,000 in Rotary scholarships. Melissa Wraalstad, on behalf of the scholarship committee, called it a night we can all be proud of.

The committee reviewed a record number of applicants this year and selected the following:

The Lowell K. Levy Hard Work Scholarship in the amount of $6,000 was awarded to Braden Meyer of Grafton. He will be pursuing a degree in biology/conservation and hopes to eventually attain a master’s degree in ornithology. This scholarship recognizes a student who has put in an exceptional amount of hard work, service, and determination. As a Boy Scout, Braden earned 75 merit badges and attained the status of Eagle Scout. He was also the first from the Bay Lakes Council to be awarded the Scouting Distinguished Conservation Service Award.

Six (6) Technical Scholarships of $6,000 each were awarded to:

Jack Bannenberg of Cedarburg, who will be studying TV and field film production at Milwaukee Area Technical College;

Natalie Ernst of Grafton, who will be pursuing a career as a veterinary technician at Madison Area Technical College;

Brison Libka and Shawn Steltenpohl of Grafton, who will both be studying Automotive Service Technology at Fox Valley Technical College;

Chase Mueller of Grafton, who will be training to become an electrical line worker at the Southeast Lineman Training Center in Trenton, GA, and

Valkyrie Wolfgram of Cedarburg, who is planning to study Cosmetology at Paul Mitchell in Denver, CO.

Snap-On Tool toolset: Shawn was pleasantly surprised when President Mike Herbrand called him back up to the front and awarded him a toolset valued at $4,855 courtesy of the Wisconsin Automobile Dealer’s Association and Snap-On Tools.

Criteria considered for the above scholarships include effort and determination, promise and potential, and financial need.

Four (4) Technical Renewal Scholarships, in the amount of $1,000 each, were awarded to last year’s recipients William Courtright, Nadia Frohmader, Marleigh Knight and Aaron Bulgrim. A fifth renewal, Jordan Guerra, declined the scholarship after taking a pause from school to accept a dream job with Gymshark while pursuing a career as an athletic trainer.

“But I am so grateful for the education and opportunity that your other scholarship offered me,” Jordan wrote to the committee. “I wouldn’t be in such a great situation without your help.”

In addition to Melissa, the other members of the scholarship committee include Carol Alexander Coutts, John Hanson, Julie Hoover, and Chad Koehler. Well done!

Student of the Month - Anna Levy (CHS) May 2024

Cedarburg High School senior Anna Levy was recognized as the May Student of the Month by the Rotary Club of Cedarburg-Grafton at its weekly lunch meeting on May 9 at the Peter Wollner American Legion Post.

In addition to being an excellent student, C.H.S. Principal Casey Bowe noted that Levy has logged 425 hours of documented community service during her high school career. “Anna’s compassion and care for others is evident in how she serves,” he said.

It’s not surprising that Levy embraces community service and volunteerism. It was her grandmother, Janet Levy, who started the community service program at C.H.S. back in the ‘90s and is her inspiration. “Thanks to her, community service is a huge part of the student culture at Cedarburg and it’s really cool to see so much excitement still around today,” Levy said in accepting her Rotary award.

Levy has volunteered at Riveredge Nature Center as a camp counselor, at the elementary and middle schools as part of the coding club to teach younger students about computer science and most recently as a reading tutor at Westlawn Elementary School. She also has volunteered many nights at Ozaukee Family Services during their free counseling sessions for struggling families.

This past year, she served as a board member on the community service leadership team which hosted a Thanksgiving dinner for senior citizens, organized a holiday card drive which donated 800 handmade cards to local nursing homes and coordinated the Mel’s Magic Moment dinner dance for individuals with disabilities. She also has worked as a certified nursing assistant at a local nursing home as part of the Ozaukee Youth Apprenticeship program. Next year, she will attend Villanova University to pursue a degree in nursing.

Service Project: March Madness Diaper Drive 2024

Student of the Month - Trevor Nauta (GHS) - April 2024

Our April student of the month Trevor Nauta, a senior at Grafton High School, was described by Superintendent Jeff Nelson as a great student and a leader in academics, athletics, and service at GHS and across the state. Trevor has an impressive list of high school accomplishments, most notably his involvement in the school’s LEO Club, which is the youth version of The Lions and focuses on service in the school and community. He has been the club president for 2 years and is currently serving as district Leo liaison. He was also instrumental in bringing the LEO program to the middle school and growing its membership from 20 to 75 students.

Trevor also helped to collect around 500 toys in the Kids2Kids Toy Drive this past year as part of the Kapco Enterprises Student Leadership Team. Fueling his interest in government, he has participated in programs like Badgers Boys State, Ozaukee County Youth Government Day, and the Wisconsin State Senate Scholar program.

Trevor said he plans to pursue a degree in Finance and Political Science at a 4-year university, yet to be decided. “My goal,” he said, “is to remain actively engaged in my community and eventually serve in an elected office to give back to the place that has given me so much.”

Student of the Month - Mary Stroebel (CHS) March 2024

Smart, talented, dedicated and driven. That’s how Cedarburg High School Principal Casey Bowe described our March Student of the Month Mary Stroebel. “Her academic prowess is undeniable,” Casey said noting that she will graduate as the Salutatorian of her class with a grade point average of 4.61. Wow! Most of us didn’t know that grade points went that high. Plus, she has completed 100 hours of formal volunteer work.

Mary is an accomplished student-athlete soccer player and has been recognized as an All-State soccer player by the WIAA several times. She will continue playing soccer after graduation at Northwestern University, where she will be pursuing a degree in economics.

In accepting the Rotary award, Mary said that Cedarburg holds a very close place in her heart and one day she hopes to return here to raise a family just like her parents did 30 years earlier. “I consider myself to be a Bulldog through and through, and I know that this community is something that is not easy to replicate. I am extremely grateful to call it home,” Mary said.

Mary designated her $50 Rotary award go to Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Ozaukee County. As the youngest of eight siblings, Mary said she hopes that this contribution can help give more area kids the kind of support that she received from her older siblings.

Applications are now being accepted for the 2025 Rotary Peace Fellowships.

The application process will be open until 15 May 2024, and interested candidates can apply through the application webpage.

This year, The Rotary Foundation will award up to 50 fellowships for master’s degrees and up to 80 fellowships for professional development certificates at premier universities throughout the world — including the newest Rotary Peace Center in Istanbul.

As a humanitarian organization, promoting peace is a cornerstone of Rotary’s mission. By carrying out service projects, supporting peace fellowships and scholarships, and partnering with others, Rotary members take action to address the underlying causes of conflict, including poverty, discrimination, ethnic tension, lack of access to education, and unequal distribution of resources. We believe that supporting peace and development leaders in their education and

careers is key to creating a more peaceful world.

Student of the Month - Michael McNabb (GHS) - Feb 2024

Grafton High School senior Michael McNabb was recognized as the Student of the Month by the Rotary Club of Cedarburg-Grafton at its weekly lunch meeting on Feb. 15 at the Peter Wollner American Legion Post.

Grafton High School Principal Scott Mantei recognized McNabb for his significant accomplishments as a basketball player noting that he is the all-time leading scorer in Grafton High School history and has exceeded 2,000 career points. “In addition to basketball, Michael is an outstanding student leader at GHS, has challenged himself by taking rigorous coursework, and understands the importance of being a role model to future Black Hawks,” Mantei said.

In accepting his award, McNabb said his ultimate goal is to inspire the next generation of young athletes to pursue their dreams and become the best version of themselves as athletes and people just as he was inspired by those before him. McNabb will be attending Northern Michigan University to play basketball. He designated his Rotary donation go to Mel’s Charities.

Student of the Month - Miles Trompeter (CHS) - Jan 2024

Our students of the month continue to amaze us! Casey introduced Cedarburg High School Senior Miles Trompeter as our January Student of the Month, calling him “an outstanding scholar with multiple talents, interests and a deep commitment to service above self.”

Miles has a remarkable 4.3 GPA while taking 10 college-level courses. He is a leader in the Robotics team (which will be presenting to our club on Feb. 8) and the Coding Club, where he has contributed to the CyberPatriot and Aerospace Jam teams (who presented their drone at a meeting last year.) He volunteers at local elementary schools teaching 5th graders how to code and complete fun tasks using small programmable robots. He is the trumpet section leader in the marching band, is lead trumpet in the Jazz Band, and No. 1 trumpet in the Symphonic Band. He earned his Eagle Scout status by building eight benches for the walking path behind Faith Lutheran Church.

While volunteering through Boy Scouts, he grew a deep connection with Family Sharing so Miles is donating his $50 Rotary award to them.

Women In Rotary Social 1/24/2024

Gail gave a shout out to Cindy for hosting a “Women in Rotary” social event at her home on Wednesday evening. Gail said, "During our discussion last night, I couldn’t help thinking what a strong group of women we are and how passionate we are about our community. What’s more, we can have a civil conversation while expressing differing opinions."

The purpose of our Women In Rotary Social is to provide a gathering place for women in our Club to build and deepen relationships. Relationship with each other personally and as service-minded female leaders in our community. Eight members of the club attended and enjoyed great food and lively conversation! Coincidentally, the gathering was held on the 35th anniversary of women being allowed to join Rotary! As our beloved Chimmy would say, “Thank God for women in Rotary.”

Student of the Month - Brogan Ringgold & Juhi Jha (GHS) - Dec 2023

Grafton High School seniors Brogan Ringgold and Juhi Jha were recognized as the Students of the Month by the Rotary Club of Cedarburg-Graton at its weekly lunch meeting on Dec. 14 at the Peter Wollner American Legion Post. “Both of these students were integral to the success of our “Every 15 Minutes” program conducted in October,” said Scott Mantei, Grafton High School principal. “This was a huge undertaking by these students demonstrating their strong leadership skills and commitment to the community.” “Every 15 Minutes” is a nationwide program designed to dramatically challenge students to think about the consequences of driving impaired or distracted. It involves the creation of a video and mock accident demonstration presented to students and the community at large. “We felt this was a natural connection to Rotary since they generously donated $3,000 to this project,” said Mantei. The video, available on youtube.com, has already received 14,000 views.

Ringgold is the senior class president and co-president of the student council. He is a student ambassador for the Grafton Education Foundation, participates in choir competitions, and is involved in Grassroots North Shore, a political action committee dedicated to voter education. He is also employed at Coco Tree Confectionery.

Jha is the president of HOSA, an organization for future health professionals, and is co-president of the student council. She is currently the lead volunteer trainer at Aurora Health Care as an Ozaukee Youth Apprentice.

The Rotary award is given monthly, alternating between Cedarburg and Grafton High Schools, to students who demonstrate hard work through school, employment, or other activities. The students receive a $50 chamber gift check for their own use, and a $50 donation is made in their name to a charity of their choice. Ringgold designated his donation go to “When We All Vote,” an organization that encourages citizens to vote. Jha chose the American Heart Association for her donation.

Jack and Rob are pleased to report that, according to their tally, the hat and mitten drive collected over 600 hats, gloves, socks, and scarves this year compared to 240 last year. Thank you to all of the MSO attendees and Club members who contributed. Your act of kindness makes the MSO concert not only the entertainment event of the season but also a successful clothing drive for Mr. Bob's Under the Bridge. (Jack & Rob are the grandsons of Rotarian & Past-President Mark Ziebell. Oh, and pup Murphy is also pictured. Aren't they adorable?!?!)

Student of the Month - Madison Engebose (CHS) - Nov 2023

Casey Bowe introduced Cedarburg High School senior Madison Engebose as our November Rotary Student of the Month.

Madison has completed over 100 hours of community service while excelling academically with a 4.5 GPA. She has taken 16 college-level and 11 Advanced Placement courses. She has actively participated in many extra-curricular activities including Math Team, Coding Club, FBLA/DECA, and Golf, where she was recently recognized as First Team All Northshore Conference, Academic All-State, and MVP of the CHS golf team. Casey said that Madison’s golf coach describes her leadership as “unparalleled.” “She has been involved in every aspect of the team, from organizing locker tags to organizing team dinners,” Casey said.

In accepting her award, a $50 chamber gift card and a $50 donation to a charity of her choice, Madison said she plans to play golf in college and major in computer science. Her dream job would be working for the PGA someday.

Her charitable donation will go to Baskets of Hope, which provides toys for patients at Children’s Hospital.

Service Project: Install Dock & Cleanup at Riveredge Nature Center

Farm Pond Dock @ Riveredge Nature Center

Earlier this year the Rotary Club of Cedarburg-Grafton donated funds to Riveredge Nature Center for the installation of a new dock. The dock is designed for people of all abilities to access Farm Pond from beyond its shoreline.

On Saturday Oct 28, 2023, we had 14 volunteers performing the following tasks.

- assembling planking for the dock floor

- cutting back invasive species at the pond's shore

- maintenance of the boardwalk on the opposite side of the pond - pulling out boards and replacing them

- trail work at the pond shore - laying gravel on paths

No Empty Backpacks Benefiting Milwaukee School District Students

Members of the Rotary Club of Cedarburg-Grafton came together to stuff backpacks with needed supplies for students attending the Milwaukee Public Schools.

Student of the Month - Grace Viesselmann (GHS) - May 2023

Grafton Superintendent and fellow Rotarian Jeff Nelson introduced our Student of the Month, Grace Viesselmann, a senior from Grafton High School.

Grace’s impressive resume includes: Class treasurer, VP of Student Council, President of National Honor Society, Black Hawk Crew Member, Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) member, and is an active athlete, playing volleyball, basketball, and track & field. Grace is currently enrolled in AP Calculus, AP Biology, and AP Economics and is planning on a major in biology/pre-pharmacy at either UW-Eau Claire or UW-Madison.

Grace has coordinated events supporting Family Sharing of Ozaukee County through her work at school and will donate her $50 to them. Congratulations Grace!

Student of the Month - Henry Cain (CHS) - Apr 2023

As our April 2023 Student of the Month, Henry Cain was introduced by CHS Principal Casey Bowe:

It is my honor to introduce you all to Mr. Henry Cain. Henry is currently a senior at Cedarburg High School. He has given back to the community through various service engagements with more than 120 documented hours. He is a leader amongst his peers, serving as a captain of his swimming and soccer teams. Henry was recognized for excellence in swimming as an All-American Honorable Mention and for his excellence in Service, Character, Scholarships, and Citizenship by the National Honor Society.

Henry Cain has sought a rigorous course load during his tenure at CHS, taking seven Advanced Placement courses and earning a remarkable 4.10 cumulative GPA in the process. Henry has deep ties to the community, and to our club as the son of fellow Rotarian Steve Cain and with three years of employment with the Olsen’s at the Piggly Wiggly in Cedarburg.

Henry consistently exemplifies what it means to be a Bulldog. Please welcome the Cedarburg High School Rotary Student of the Month, Mr. Henry Cain.

Student of the Month - Katie Dembiec (GHS) - Mar 2023

Jeff Nelson, Rotarian and GSD Superintendent, introduced Kayla Dembiec as our March Student of the Month from Grafton High School. Kayla is the captain of the varsity dance team, vice president of the National Honor Society, coach of the middle school dance team, and a lifeguard. She is a student in AP Research and was the third-place state finisher of the American Legion Oratorical Contest. She said she had to write an eight to 10-minute speech on the United States Constitution, and then give that speech in front of an audience and panel of judges, completely memorized. Amazing! She plans to major in broadcast journalism. Kayla designated her $50 charitable donation from our club to Franciscan Peacemakers, which connects women survivors of sex trafficking to safe housing, meaningful work, and a healing network of support.

Mark Z. reported that we have 15 bowlers signed up for the red pin bowling event to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ozaukee County for tomorrow, March 17. Our Club raised a total of $2915.00... Well Done!

Nicole McNevin of Neenah Receives Rotary Peace Fellowship

Rotary International District 6270 is pleased to announce that Nicole McNevin of Neenah, Wisc., has received a prized Rotary Peace Fellowship (RPF) for 2023-2025. She has been accepted into the Master’s Course in Peace Studies, Public Policy and Public Research Program, at International Christian University (ICU), Tokyo, Japan.

The daughter of Mary & Richard McNevin of Neenah, Wisc., Nicole is a graduate of Neenah High School and Wheaton College, Ill. (2017) She speaks Japanese and is currently in the 4^th year of the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program where she teaches English and culture to students in low-income areas. In 1921, North Tulsa’s Greenwood District, the most prosperous Black community in America, was set ablaze, bombed, and looted during a racially motivated violent attack against the thriving Black community. Businesses, homes, and lives were lost, and Black Wall Street, as it was known, has never reclaimed its former glory. The Tulsa Race Massacre was only the first in a line of repeated targeted attacks on the progress of the Greenwood District and its residents.

Update: Generators for Ukraine Project

Supporting Ukraine

Dear Friends,

We are writing with another update on our collective efforts to provide generators, power, and warmth to Ukrainian humanitarian facilities. Generous Rotarians, individuals, and Rotary Clubs across Wisconsin, the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and beyond have raised over $130,000, surpassing our initial goal of $75,000. Our partner, Friends of Be an Angel, has arranged to purchase more generators than originally planned. 1,700 generators have been acquired and two shipments containing 1,192 generators have arrived in Ukraine, with the remaining generators arriving within the next week. The total cost of the generators is $1,013,760 and, to date, commitments have been received for just under $828,630. Donations are still being accepted, so please feel free to share our efforts with friends and neighbors.

The generators that have already arrived in Ukraine are being gratefully received, as shown in this video from a grateful teacher.

$20,000 Grant Awarded for CHS Turf Project

Cedarburg-Grafton Rotary Donates $20,000 for CHS Turf Project

The Rotary Club of Cedarburg-Grafton, represented by Grants Committee Chair Pat Thome, right, presented a $20,000 check to the Cedarburg High School Athletics Department as part of a fundraising campaign to install turf at the high school baseball and softball fields. Accepting the donation were (from left) Superintendent Jeridon Clark, High School Principal Casey Bowe, and Athletics Director Jon Hannam. The turf project, which is expected to be completed in time for the 2024 spring season, will allow high school and youth programs additional access to practice time and greater assurance of completing a full season. According to Hannam, the current infield surface is susceptible to unpredictable climate conditions, which limits play time. The project is being privately funded.

Student Of The Month - Zakira Masslich (CSH) - Feb 2023

Cedarburg High School Principal, Casey Bowe, introduced this month’s Student of the Month Zakira Masslich.

Zakira Masslich is a senior and one of Cedarburg High School’s most accomplished students. She is an active member of our Tennis Team, Math Team, AFS Club, Spanish Club, and FCA. She is currently at the very top of her class per GPA despite nearly exhausting our most difficult offerings. Her current schedule of six AP courses is arguably the most challenging course load we can offer a student at our school. Her teachers report that her drive to learn and understand all aspects of each class challenges them to be even better teachers. Not only does she seek out challenges, but she is persistently committed to overcoming them. Zakira represents the best of what it means to be a Cedarburg Bulldog and I am honored to introduce Zakira Masslich as the CHS Rotary Student of the month.

Zakira picked Family Sharing for her $50 donation and she also receives $50 in Cedarburg Chamber Bucks for herself. Congrats!

2022 Hat & Mitten Drive

As a service project, the Rotary Club of Cedarburg-Grafton held a hat & mitten drive at its annual holiday concert by the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra on Dec. 15, 2022. The club collected 100 hats, 40 sets of gloves,100 pairs of warm socks, a blanket, and some scarves to make the season a bit warmer for friends of Mr. Bob’s Under the Bridge, a local charity that supports the homeless community in Milwaukee.

2022 MSO Holiday Concert

Concert enthusiasts from near and far joined together for another sold-out holiday concert on December 15, 2022 at the Cedarburg Performing Arts Center. This year, the program included a sing-along!

Annually, the Rotary Club of Cedarburg-Grafton is proud to present the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra (MSO) performing a classic holiday concert right here in our community. The MSO is among the finest orchestras in the nation and the largest cultural institution in Wisconsin.

All proceeds are used locally for student scholarships and grants to non-profit organizations.

Student of the Month - CHS Evan Weber - Dec 2022

Casey Bowe, C-G Rotarian and CHS Principal, introduced Cedarburg High School’s Student of the Month for December 2022, senior Evan Weber.

Evan has been involved with many different service clubs and sports teams, including the National Honor Society, three years on the Student Council, being a key member of

the Business Capstone class, Best Buddies, and leads the scheduling and working at concession stands for school events. He’s also had high levels of performance in the most challenging classes. In the classroom, on the field, and in the community, Evan is the consummate Bulldog.

Evan chose Mr. Bob’s Under the Bridge as his charitable donation.

Tickets for the 23rd annual Rotary Music Festival are now on sale. The drum and bugle corps show will be held Monday, July 3, 2023, at the Cedarburg High School Alumni Field starting at 7 p.m. The event is hosted by the Rotary Club of Cedarburg-Grafton.

- Blue Stars of La Crosse, WI

Four of the corps were ranked among the top 12 in the world competition last year.

Student Of The Month - GHS Jordan Guerra - Nov 2022

Jordan Guerra, a senior at Grafton High School, is the first Grafton recipient of the Student of the Month program recently launched by the Cedarburg-Grafton Rotary. He was honored during today club luncheon meeting at the Peter Wollner American Legion Post in Cedarburg.

The program recognizes students from Cedarburg and Grafton High School who demonstrate hard work through school, employment, or other activities. They must show a strong dedication to community service or have made a meaningful or lasting contribution to their community.

In selecting Guerra, Grafton School Superintendent Jeff Nelson said he is actively involved in many school activities including varsity soccer, Leo’s, Military History Book Club, and Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA). “He is a strong student enrolled in Advanced Placement classes while also being a Youth Apprentice at Controlled Dynamics,” Nelson said. “You will often see Jordan volunteering at high school events with a video camera and microphone recording students and performers/athletes in action and then editing the clips for social media. He worked with me last year on creating our annual staff retiree videos and did a great job capturing our staff and their memories of working in our district.” Nelson said Guerra is a “giving person who will do great things” after leaving GHS.

Katie O’Connor Named Rotary Club's First Student of the Month - Oct 2022

Katie O’Connor, a senior at Cedarburg High School, is the first recipient of the Student of the Month program recently launched by the Rotary Club of Cedarburg-Grafton. She was honored at the club’s weekly lunch meeting on Nov. 3 at the Peter Wollner American Legion Post in Cedarburg.

The program recognizes students from Cedarburg and Grafton High School who demonstrate hard work through school, employment or other activities, according to Melissa Wraalstad, club president. They must show a strong dedication to community service or have made a meaningful or lasting contribution to their community.

In selecting O’Connor, Cedarburg High School Principal Casey Bowe said she is one of the “most involved students” at CHS. She is a member of the AFS Club, Best Buddies Club, Drama Club, FCA, French Club, REDgen and the tennis team. She is also a gifted singer and was one of only 16 from across the state to be accepted into the All-State Vocal Jazz Choir this year. She performs with the Acapella and Bella Voce Choirs at CHS and has been cast as a principal role in the CHS musical for the past two years.

“Katie is a leader in our school. She holds herself to extremely high standards, supports her peers, works incredibly hard, and is respectful, kind, and humble,” Bowe said.

The Rotary Club of Cedarburg-Grafton presented a check for $1,000 to Julie Hoover, Executive Directory at Family Sharing of Ozaukee County, during their Empty Bowls event on Friday October 28, 2022.

Founded in 1978, Family Sharing is the longest-standing Food Pantry in Ozaukee County. They provide food, at no cost, to Ozaukee County residents in need. The proceeds from their upscale resale store sale and events go directly to supporting the Food Pantry.

2022 No Empty Backpacks - MPS School Supply Drive

As its first service project of the year, club members formed an assembly line at its Aug. 18 meeting to fill backpacks with school supplies for the “No Empty Backpacks” program. The backpacks were delivered to the Milwaukee Public School System in time for the start of the new school year. Past President Mark Ziebell (3rd from left) and his wife Judy shopped for the supplies and made sure that each backpack was filled to the brim with notebooks, pencils, rulers and much more.

The new board of directors for the Cedarburg-Grafton Rotary Club officially began its duties in July for the 2022-2023 year. The Cedarburg-Grafton Rotary Club is a service organization with nearly 60 members. Its three major fund-raising events — the Rotary Bike Ride in May, the Rotary Music Festival in July and the Milwaukee Symphony Holiday Concert in December — raise nearly $100,000 annually to support community projects, local non-profit organizations and student scholarships.

2021-2022 Scholarship Recipients

John Hanson introduced three of this year’s scholarship recipients: Connor Sobczak, who will be attending MATC to pursue a career as an electrician, Lauren Rathke, who will be attending MATC to pursue a degree in photography, and Ella Day, who received the Lowell K. Levy Hard Work Scholarship and will be attending Creighton University with a double major in biology & Spanish. John noted that this year the club awarded five technical scholarships for $6,000 each, five renewal scholarships for $1,000 each, and the annual Lowell K. Levy Hard Work Scholarship for $6,000.

22nd Annual Rotary Music Festival

The 22st annual Rotary Music Festival returns to Cedarburg this summer on Sunday, July 3rd. Four (4) amazing Midwestern drum and bugle corps will perform at the Cedarburg High School Alumni Field that evening. Performances by Madison Scouts, Blue Stars, River City Rhythm, and the Colt Cadets. Pre-show appearances by Wisconsin SoundSport Teams including the Green Beret and Sound of Sun Prairie. The event is hosted by the Cedarburg-Grafton Rotary Club. All seats are reserved so advanced tickets are encouraged to get the best seats in the stadium.

The passing of Robert "Chimmy" Chmielewski 2/17/2022

We mourn the loss of fellow Rotarian Bob “Chimmy” Chmielewski on Feb. 16. Chimmy was a member of our club for 41 years and served as president from 1987-88. He was a big supporter of Rotary’s student exchange program and hosted several students over the years. We will miss his big personality and his zest for life. His enthusiasm was contagious. We will see you on the other side our friend!

Chimmy was the man who always - and we mean always - saw and brought out the best in others. Chimmy was a wonderful friend and colleague and loved his family dearly. His vibrant personality was loved by all that knew him and he loved talking about MU or sharing stories about his Marquette Warriors days. His family wrote "The overwhelming outpouring of prayers, support and well wishes is a true testament to our amazing father and all the lives he has touched. He willl be missed more than words can express."

The celebration of Chimmy's wonderful life will be on February 25th. Feel free to wear your best blue and gold/MU gear if you so choose. Masks are strongly encouraged.

Guatemalan Water Project

In February 2022, the Cedarburg-Grafton Rotary board of directors approved a $500 donation toward the Guatemalan Service Project, allowing the on-site volunteers to provide 5 families with filtered water.

The Mukwonago club announced in January, along with others they will deliver a minimum of #50 TivaWater filters to families in Chichicastenango, Guatemala March 5th - March 12th, 2022. The Mukwonago club along with the Oconomowoc club have successfully done prior projects with the Guatemalan Service Projects, Inc a 501c3 non profit.

Annually, high school students from Cedarburg and Grafton school districts are invited to participate in a logo design contest sponsored by the Rotary Club of Cedarburg-Grafton. In a blind review by the Rotary Ride Logo Contest committee, the design selected was created by Morgan Adams, a senior at Cedarburg High School.

High school students from Cedarburg and Grafton are invited to participate in a logo design contest sponsored by the Rotary Club of Cedarburg-Grafton. The logo will be used to promote a bicycling event that will be hosted by the club on May 21 starting and ending at Cedar Creek Park in Cedarburg.

All entries must be submitted by Jan. 12, 2022, to CindyPetted@gmail.com.

Logo Design and Parameters: The theme this year is International Rotary’s cause, Protecting the Environment. The student's design should incorporate the event name: ROTARY RIDE - Cycling to Serve. It should also include the Rotary International wheel logo.

The winning design, as selected by the Rotary Ride logo contest committee, will be used on posters, signs, the registration website, t-shirts, and in ads to promote the event. The winner of the contest will receive a $100 cash award and a photo opportunity that will be submitted to local media and posted on the club’s website. All participants in the contest will receive a Confirmation of Volunteer Service letter for two hours of community service.

2021 Paul Harris Awards Ceremony

The Paul Harris Fellow recognition acknowledges individuals who contribute, or who have had contributions made in their name, of $1,000 to The Rotary Foundation. Through the “Every Rotarian, Every Year” campaign, collectively our Club members contribute between $5,000 and $6,000 to Rotary International annually.

More than 1500 tickets were sold and over $2200 in raffle ticket sales. To complement the great performance of the Drum & Bugle Corps teams, the weather turned from rain to nearly perfect sky as the show began.

For sun lovers, the inaugural Rotary Ride on Saturday, May 22, was a shining success. Hosted by the Cedarburg-Grafton Rotary Club, more than 500 bicyclists registered to ride one of four routes throughout the scenic countryside of Ozaukee County. Afterward, cyclists and the public were entertained with music, a beer & wine garden, and a variety of delicious meals near the finish line in Cedarburg’s Cedar Creek Park.

The Passing of Dan Davis

Club President, Linda Pierschella, paid tribute to our fallen Rotarian Dan Davis, who passed away at the young age of 57 on May 14 after a courageous battle with cancer. Dan was a member of our Rotary board as youth exchange chair and he and his wife, Beth, often volunteered at our fundraising events. Knowing Dan’s love for the outdoors through his work at Riveredge Nature Center, Linda shared these quotes by famed naturalist John Muir in Dan’s honor:

“Let children walk with Nature, let them see the beautiful blendings and communions of death and life, their joyous inseparable unity, as taught in woods and meadows, plains and mountains and streams of our blessed star, and they will learn that death is stingless indeed, and as beautiful as life.”

“The mountains are calling, and I must go.”

David “Bones” Boyles was a bright light in our Rotary Club and we mourn his passing on Tuesday, April 27. A member of our club since 2002, Bones taught us the joy of giving, of music, and of laughter. We will miss you, our friend, but we know that you are leading us in song from Heaven. We will be watching the Orioles for you!!!

Rotary Ride Logo Contest Winner

Maya Hahm, a sophomore at Cedarburg High School, submitted the winning logo design for the Cedarburg-Grafton Rotary Ride, which will be held Saturday, May 22, starting and finishing at Cedar Creek Park. Hahm’s design was selected from a field of 33 entries submitted by students from Cedarburg and Grafton High Schools. Participants in the logo design contest were asked to submit a design that reflects the mission and the values of the club as well as incorporate the Rotary International logo.

“This logo really represents the spirit of Rotary. The world. People hand in hand serving together,” said Pat Thome, a member of the selection committee. Hahm’s logo will be used on t-shirts, posters and other publicity materials for the event. She received a $100 cash prize for having the winning entry. All participants received credit for two hours of volunteer community service.
