Social Media Founding, Growth, Next steps
Feb 23, 2022
Stacy Winters created the Omaha Food Lovers in August 2019 to share his passion for food and to create a local foodie community where people feel welcome to respectfully discuss all things food. The group has exploded beyond anyone's wildest dreams. Prior to the pandemic, the group had just over 16,000 members and almost two years later has grown to over 73,000 members along with 11 Moderators. The group has provided an amazing way for members to learn about new places in and around Omaha and has given restauranteurs a great place to advertise their offerings for free and interact directly with their customers. The group has become about much more than just food. It is about community, giving back and creating relationships. As a group, we have raised over $170,000 ($340,000 with generous matches) during the past two December’s for the Food Bank for the Heartland. It has also spawned an incredible business opportunity with the recent launch of the FoodLovers app! |

UNO
Mar 30, 2022
In a historic appointment, the University of Nebraska Board of Regents today unanimously confirmed Joanne Li, Ph.D., CFA, as the 16th chancellor of the University of Nebraska at Omaha. She will become the first woman of color to serve as UNO chancellor and the first Asian-American in the history of the University of Nebraska system to hold an executive leadership role. The Board’s action follows a national search that resulted in NU System President Ted Carter’s selection of Li as the priority candidate for UNO chancellor. Her candidacy then underwent a 30-day public vetting period during which Li engaged with 600-plus UNO students, faculty, staff, alumni and stakeholders to answer their questions and share her vision for Nebraska’s metropolitan university. "The heart of any university are its people. As I’ve gotten to know the people who make UNO such a wonderfully vibrant and diverse place, I’ve only become more excited about our potential to become the nation’s leading metropolitan university," Li said. "I’m humbled that so many individuals took time to share their thoughts with me on what it means to be a Maverick" Click here to read more about Joanne Li. |

Free Legal Clinic
May 04, 2022
Ross Pesek is a Bi-Lingual (English/Spanish) trial lawyer, born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska. Initially, he practiced as a criminal and immigration trial lawyer, obtaining legal immigration status or stopping deportations for hundreds of individuals (and their families) in his neighborhood. Today, Ross focuses and assisting negligence victims get justice before Nebraska juries. Ross is one of few bi-lingual trial lawyers in Nebraska to have won a civil jury verdict for undocumented immigrants. Ross demands justice for immigrants and Spanish speakers that other lawyers choose not to represent and who opposing interests often discriminate against. In 2011, Ross founded a free legal clinic at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in South Omaha – the same church where he was married and baptized. Every Monday night at 7:00 pm for the last ten years Ross and volunteer lawyers he has organized have provided thousands of free legal consultations to South Omaha families. Ross believes giving access to honest, competent legal advice without charging a consultation fee – often the equivalent of 15 or 20 hours of work on the factory line – is a valuable community service that expands access to legal services for many in South Omaha and surrounding areas. Ross was awarded the "Outstanding Young Lawyer" by the Nebraska Bar Association (2013), an "Early Achiever" by the University of Nebraska College of law (2014), the "Seeds of Justice" award by Nebraska Appleseed (2017) and other professional recognitions. |
