WHAT'S HAPPENING LATELY?

Congratulations to Kenneth Li on being inducted as an honorary member of the Sharpstown Rotary Club!

The induction was presided over by the Past District Governor Nancy Anderson alongside with his sponsoring club member JP Jourard and the club President Karen Blakeman. Kenneth’s story is deeply tied to Houston. Taiwan born and Houston built, his decades of leadership in real estate and community development have strengthened one of the city's most important cultural and commercial corridors. His work reflects long term commitment to opportunity, collaboration, and service. Welcome to the Rotary family, Kenneth!

Operation Turkey

This District-run event serves 10,000 in the greater Houston area. Individual dinners are distributed directly to private homes and low-income group facilities and to churches and community centers for pick up. Participation in the 2-day meal prep and delivery includes volunteers from many groups and families alongside the Rotarians.

November Book Distribution

For most children at Neff Early Learning Center (NELC), English is a second language. Each child receives a few age appropriate books to take home and start a home library. They promise to read to others and teach others to read. Once a child completes the 3 years at NELC, they will have gotten books from our 6 book distributions for their home library. Our kids typically read at or above 1^st grade by graduation.

Fort Hood Assistance

The gap in payment to Government employees took an extra long time while Congress decided on the Budget. To assist first responders, District 5890 and our club contributed to filling the post in Fort Hood with additional stores of requested food items. Houston Millennials joined with VFW to start and handle logistics of the project.

We had a great time meeting and getting to know all the amazing Jerusalem Peacebuilder participants at the Palmer Memorial Episcopal Church! We were joined by DG Tom Kelchner and other Rotarians from our District.

Our Current Projects:

We nurture literacy in children with our award-winning early learners book distribution program.
We build emotional health in middle- and high-schoolers around the clock with our Be-Hope cell phone App.
We give vocational school scholarships to young people who are eager to develop much needed skills.
We incubate peacebuilding with an annual retreat that brings together Jewish, Muslim, Christian and Druze youth from the Middle East.
We generously support Rotary International’s commitment to eliminating polio from our planet.
