The goal is to restore hope

Rotary International President-elect R. Gordon R. McInally called for members to capture the world's attention and lead the way toward possibilities far beyond our current expectations.
McInally, a member of the Rotary Club of South Queensferry, West Lothian, Scotland, revealed the 2023-24 presidential theme, Create Hope in the World, during the Rotary International Assembly in Orlando, Florida, USA, on 9 January. He urged members to promote peace in troubled nations, help those affected by conflict, and maintain the momentum of initiatives begun by past leaders.

WALTER D. HEAD FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP

WALTER D. HEAD FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS ARE NOW ACCEPTED UNTIL MAY 5TH, 2023

The Charitable Foundation of Rotary International District 7490
Providing Scholarships for area undergraduate and graduate students,
and funding for local Rotary projects.

APPLICATION LINK:

The Rotary District 740 Walter D. Head Foundation is the districts charitable foundation.  It was founded in 1965 by a resolution at the District Conference on Grand Bahama Island.  The District Governor was Russell Armstrong and the founders were PDG Ira Mitchell and Paramus Rotarian Nick Laganella.  It was named for Walter D. Head, a former member of the Teaneck Rotary Club and the first District 7490 Rotarian to become the President of Rotary International in 1939-1940.
Dr. Head was a renowned educator who presided as Provost of the college which preceded  Fairleigh Dickinson University and who was also instrumental in the formation of The United Nations.
The original purpose of the District Foundation was to award one scholarship every other year in opposition to The Rotary Foundation which, at that time, was granting an Ambassadorial Scholarship every other year.  The major differences between The Rotary Foundation scholarship awards and The District WDH Foundation awards are: The Rotary Foundation Scholarship is a fully funded award which is controlled  by Rotary International and is not available to Rotarians or their families.  The Walter D. Head awards are for a partial scholarship which is controlled by our own District and is available to relatives of Rotarians as well as to all others.
The purpose of the District Foundation has evolved.  In addition to providing academic scholarships, it also provides Supplemental Funding Grants for local community service projects undertaken by two or more Rotary Clubs, and serves as the conduit for charitable giving for the District.
Recently, the District Foundation formed the Rotary Military Family Assistance Center to provide services to the families of active service men and women.
Funding for the Foundation, a 501c3 Tax Exempt organization, takes many forms.  In the beginning each Rotarian was assessed, in his dues, one dollar.  This funding was rescinded several years ago as was other funding from the District.  For the last several years fund raising events were held in conjunction with the sale of  Walter D. Head Plaques,  which is our major fund raiser.
This year the Foundation is asking each Rotary Club to purchase and award one or more Walter D. Head Plaques to honor anyone, Rotarian or non-Rotarian, who has performed outstanding service and upheld the ideals of Rotary. We earnestly request that you join in and commit to this fund raising effort.

Message from your President 2022

I would like to start by thanking every Rotarian in Mid-Bergen and in our district 7490 for being there for those in need.

There are many wonderful people in this club with great energy helping to create a better life for those in need around the world.
Over the years I have been involved with many community groups, but nowhere have I met better people than the members of this club.

I want to thank my husband Cesar and my son JM both of whom helped out a lot during this Journey and also....
  • Our board for their commitment to the club, for all their hard work
  • Our committees and committee chairs for doing the actual work of the club and for bringing in new members.
  • Our club members for rising to the occasion when called upon. Your ongoing support is an inspiration to others.
  • Our District Governor John Susani and PDG Carl Hassett for their guidance, positive attitude and encouragement during the last 2 years
  • Sharon Smith who put in a lot of time and effort in every aspect of making our Club the number # 1 Rotary Club  and who has been my mentor and dear friend getting through with all the hands on hard work during this time.
I am not going to try to highlight all our accomplishments for the past 2 years, but there are a few that must be mentioned.

Our E-Club's  commitment to service
Gift of Life initiatives in the country and abroad
Maternity Packages through my own initiative with the Baby Bundle and acquiring DDF fund’s from District in Support of the program so much was done with our PDG Carl Hassett and  the Disaster Aid relief in our country and abroad Our Rotarians stepped up during the pandemic to deliver food to healthcare professionals we were there for the domestic abuse victims we took a part in Environmental projects held Toy drives during the holidays we were there with Military assistance and helped disadvantaged people in our community.

Our own Joe Laureni, PDG was so busy writing up Grants with applications in progress for a Gift of Life grant for the Ukraine for sponsoring operations in Ukraine and developing a Pediatric Program in Bolivia - Mid-Bergen & La Paz Sur – hundreds of thousands of dollars are being distributed to help children around the world in saving lives as well as Ruth Nebiar who took her time to travel during the pandemic to make sure the children were able to get the help the needed, so many lives were saved. KUDOS to GIFT OF LIFE and all they do let our Club continue to support this mission as so many lives are saved.

We also did the online auction fund raiser successfully twice to support those in need as we were unable to do our main Beefsteak fundraiser  due to the pandemic. Thank  you to all who participated and to our incoming President Jill Abbott as she was essential in this fundraiser as well as I must mention that we secured so many SPONSORS who gave us the goods for the auction and we are great full for their continued support.

This last 2 year’s success I can not take all the credit for as our past President Luisa Corallo gave us so much of her time and lead us through the difficult pandemic times.

My main personal goal was for us all to have fun together while supporting the things that matter to us and this has been a rewarding and an inspiring experience.

I thank you for the support you gave me.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MID-BERGEN ROTARY

Our Mid-Bergen Rotary Club held its first meeting on February 8, 1962 and was originally chartered as the Teterboro Rotary Club, Bergen County, New Jersey. We are now 59 years old!
As the 1960's progressed the club grew with members from surrounding towns of Hasbrouck Heights, Wood-Ridge and South Hackensack thereby prompting to change its name to Mid-Bergen.
Today we are a vibrant club that continue to serve with projects and activities to improve life in our community and world-wide.
Thank you to all members for being there over the years !!
I would like to get some comments from our members of their experiences with the club and or their Rotary Moments.
Thank you to businesses, partners, family and friends who have supported us over the years in our events and fundraising we couldn’t do it without your help!!

Faith Foundation,  which was operating out of a storefront in Hackensack took in people no one else wanted. Their clients were the homeless, mentally ill patients without medication, alcoholics and drug addicts.

Robin Reilly and  her  volunteer staff  has tried to find food, housing, transportation, medication and mental health programs for these people in need for over a decade.
