Peace Boat Scholarship Application Deadline Extended

Greenville, New York Rotary Club

Peace Boat Scholarship Application Deadline Extended to February 29, 2024

The Greenville, NY Rotary Club announces a new scholarship program. We will choose one young Greenville area scholar, age 18-30 to sail with the Peace Boat as a member of the Youth for the SDGs Program, interacting and learning peace-building skills with other scholars from around the world. Peace Boat works in partnership with the United Nations and aims to promote and strengthen youth engagement through the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Action Campaign.

We ask that you research these links and learn about the important work the Peace Boat and the United Nations have done for the world. Programs onboard the Peace Boat combines learning, activism, advocacy, and travel.

The Peace Boat visits 200 countries per year as it travels around the globe promoting and teaching peace and sustainability. The next youth scholarship program will be traveling in July, 2024, the revised travel date of this scholarship. The Peace Boat confirms that the destination of the July scholarship will be either the Arctic or Latin America. A passport is required. The extended application deadline allows additional time to apply for and receive an international passport.

The goal of the Peace Boat is to promote peace, human rights, and sustainability. How do these three pillars relate to your life and your passions? What do you hope to achieve as the first young scholar and representative of Greenville, NY onboard the Peace Boat?

If you would like to be considered for this scholarship, we ask that you to share your enthusiasm and creativity with us in the form of a multi-media video. The video must be a one to three minute presentation responding to the above questions, and can take any creative form - an animation, music, poetry, art, storytelling, a play, a narrative. We would like to see your passion for peace through this video. Questions? Please email peaceboatapplications@gmail.com.

Please submit the video through a Wetransfer link. We recommend that you are certain that the video link will open by sending it to a friend or family member first. Along with your video, please submit a written resume, which includes your community service activities, travel history and education background.

Please send your application to: peaceboatapplications@gmail.com by February 29, 2024. We look forward to learning about you.

Trunk or Treat was Spook-tacular!

Thank you to everyone who came out to our 9th annual Rotary Trunk or Treat on Halloween.  Thanks to families, volunteers with vehicles, GNH Lumber for hosting and setting up a safe area in the parking lot for all the children, the Greene County Sherriff, Greenville Volunteer Fire and Rescue Companies, the American Legion for cooking hot dogs - and all the other groups that come together to make this service project happen.  We couldn't do it without the organizational skills of Rotarian Debbie Smith and the creative skills of our Photo Booth maestro, Elizabeth Gioja.

Each year the Greenville Rotary Club celebrates Noah Webster's birthday by giving every student in the 3rd grade their own dictionary to keep!  Even in this digital age, the kids love having their own reference book.  Librarians and teachers and Rotarians teach them how to use the book and send the children on a word scavenger hunt.

Greenville Rotary Supports Food Pantry and Scott M. Ellis Elementary

Greenville Rotary Supports Food Pantry & Scott M. Ellis Elementary

The motto of the Grenville Rotary Club is “Service Above Self,” and this winter the club and its’ members and supporters proved that motto to be true.

For the “Feeding Hudson Valley” service theme, the club is sponsoring a food drive to benefit the Greenville Area Food Pantry. The “Super Bowl” food drive is collecting two of the pantry’s most-needed items:  soup and cereal.  So far, 369 items have been collected.  Donation boxes have been placed at the National Bank of Coxsackie, Dollar General, and TOPS.  Thanks to all who have helped fulfill the need of the families who use the food pantry - demand has recently increased to about 70 households from the previous 40 households served.  The pantry is open the first and third Wednesday mornings at the George Vanderbilt Town Park.

The Rotary Club likes to help students at the Scott M. Ellis Elementary school be prepared for winter by donating snowpants and sweatpants to be kept at the nurse’s office for children who may be unprepared for the weather or who have a wardrobe malfunction.  The Rotary recently responded to the need of students by donating 18 pairs of sweatpants.

For more information, contact the Greenville Rotary Club at greenvillenyrotaryclub@gmail.com.  The club meets every Thursday evening at 6 p.m. at the Mountain View Brasserie

Trunk or Treat 2022

Join us for our 8th annual Trunk or Treat event at GNH Lumber at 11513 SR 32, Greenville, NY 12083 on Halloween!  Free, safe trick or treating for all children.

This event will be structured and controlled, because of the large number of families attending.. We had a successful and safe event last year.  Thank you for your help in following these rules and allowing Greenville’s children to have safe Trick or Treating!  Children and parents will be allowed into the Trunk-or-Treat area in separate groups.   Each family will be asked to move to the next vehicle so that the following family can proceed - thereby having only one family group at each vehicle at a time. All foot traffic will be one-way down the single line of cars.

If you are interested in bringing a car, decorating it, and giving out candy, please download the form here https://docs.google.com/document/d/1_48q45k6AqirBm4ClQ1iZ_1M08IyjO1TzyB2t1QN0F8/edit?usp=sharing

Charter Member Stanley Ingalls Passes

We are sad to share the news of the passing of our Charter Member, Stanley Ingalls.  Condolences to his family, GNH staff, and all those touched by his years of service to our community.

OBITUARY OF STANLEY RANDALL INGALLS

FREEHOLD – Stanley R. Ingalls passed away on Friday, August 13, 2021 at his home surrounded by his children. Born in Catskill, he was the son of the late Randall and Cornelia Yeomans Ingalls. Stanley was a graduate of Greenville Central School District. He attended SUNY Delhi, and received an Associate’s degree in mechanical drawing and Construction technology. Upon graduation Stanley enlisted in the United States Navy Seabees and served two tours in Vietnam. After returning from Vietnam, Stan returned to work side by side with his father Randall and his Uncle Walter for the family business, GNH Lumber, Inc. In 1970, Stanley married Ellen M. Bush who later died in 1985. In 1990, Stan married Helen J. Campbell and they combined their families. Stan was an active board member of the Eastern New York Lumber Dealers Association. Stan’s passion was drafting & design; his focus was passive solar homes as well as design-erected pole barns which both became his signature. In 2004 Stan uprooted the family business and relocated the flagship store from Norton Hill to Greenville, expanded into the Coxsackie market in 2008, and then to Latham in 2013. Under Stan’s leadership and drive, GNH Lumber, Inc. flourished. Stan retired in 2019, after more than 55 years in the Lumber business, receiving many accolades including “Lumber Person of the Year.” A member of the Asbury United Methodist Church in Greenville for his whole life, he served as a trustee, head of the finance committee, on the daycare board and in many other ways. He was a devoted Christian and loved his church family. Stan is survived by his seven children: Marjorie Powell, Donald Powell, Jr., Dian (Paul) Spinner, Scott (Jo-Ann) Powell, Megan (John) Lafferty, Genevieve (Thomas) Howley, and John (Jeanette) Ingalls; 11 grand-children and 3 great-grandchildren; his sister Jane Ann (Edward) McQuillen; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, Stan was predeceased by both of his wives, Ellen Bush Ingalls and Helen Campbell Ingalls. Stan has been cremated privately. Relatives and friends are invited to a memorial service and celebration of Stan’s life on Sunday August 29th, at 2:00pm at the Westerlo Town Park, 933 County Route 401, Westerlo, NY. The services will be held outdoors; casual dress please; tents / pavilion will be provided. All are invited to remain for a reception with refreshments. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Stan’s name can be made to the United Methodist Church Trustees, PO Box 599, Greenville, NY 12083. Condolences may be expressed at ajcunninghamfh.com

Brooks BBQ - Help Us Save Lives!

Our Brooks BBQ will help us purchase a portable IV fluid warmer for the Greene County EMS stationed in Greenville.  IV fluid warmers save lives by rapidly heating IV fluids to body temperature, reversing and preventing hypothermia and improving patient outcomes.

In lieu of our usual display of sponsored trees and our visit from Mr. and Mrs. Claus, the Rotary Club put up and lighted four large trees at the Gazebo in Veteran's Park. Thanks to Raphael Bemporad for the trees, and GNH Lumber, FPI Mechanical, the Town of Greenville, and Bucci Enterprises, as well as our own Rotary Club members,  for getting the trees out of the woods and into the park!

Trunk or Treat 2020 Safe and Successful!

On Halloween, our club hosted our 6th Annual Trunk or Treat event for the families of Greenville.  This year, over 600 children and their families came to GNH Lumber for fall fun.  Thanks to everyone for your patience in the queue and for wearing masks and maintaining a safe distance from other families!
Thanks also to our the Greene County Sheriff and the Greenville Fire Company for helping us keeping the event safe!  Volunteers from Rotary and the whole community brought about 20 vehicles and shared candy with the kids.  The American Legion served free hot dogs and sodas to all the parents and Trick or Treaters!  GNH Lumber, as always, was a fantastic host.  It truly takes a village, and we are proud to be a part of such a caring community that worked together to make 2020 a happy Halloween for kids!  Thank you!
Check out our album for more photos of the event.

Thank you to Greenville American Legion Post 291 for giving us a new home for our meetings until we can return to the Mountain View Brasserie.

Congratulations Class of 2020!

On June 4, the Greenville Central School District presented the annual senior awards in a virtual format.  Our treasurer, Robin Frechette, presented our annual Rotary scholarships to four outstanding seniors. We are pleased to share them with you here.
Our club would also like to congratulate all those seniors who have participated in Interact Club this year.  We are offering each Interact graduate an honorary membership to Rotary International.
It is the hope of our club that all these students will continue to feel a part of the Rotary family, and keep Rotary in mind when they want to become involved in their community and provide "Service Above Self."

Santa's Visit, Beautiful Trees, and Happy Children

On Friday, November 29 our club sponsored the annual tree lighting ceremony and Santa's visit in Greenville.  Many children and families came to enjoy and decorate the trees, snack on hot cocoa and cookies, and have their photo taken with Santa and Mrs. Claus.  Each child received a small gift and were entered to win larger gifts and a bicycle.  Thank you to all our tree sponsors, Interact students, Rotary volunteers, and the Town of Greenville for making this treasured event an annual tradition!  See all our photos in the album below.  Photo credit:  Denise Mink

Youth Exchange Students Tell Tales of Travel

Pictured above are Eli (from Milan, Italy) and Bella (from Greenville) at the Greenville Rotary meeting earlier this month.  Eli is spending the next 10 months studying at Greenville High School, and shared a little with the local Rotarians about her home and family and her hopes for her exchange year.  Bella participated in the Rotary short-term European exchange program during the summer of 2019.  She stayed in Milan, Italy with her exchange sister, Martina, and Martina visited here in Greenville.  Bella was fortunate to have many new and exciting experiences during her weeks in Italy.  Her family is now hosting Eli as she begins school in the USA.  The Greenville Rotary is seeking families to host Eli during the winter and spring months.  Each family hosts for approximately 3 months.  For more information on hosting a Rotary exchange student, contact Todd Hilgendorff at hilgendorfft@greenvillecsd.org

Youth Exchange Dinner

Last Thursday we have our annual Youth Exchange dinner. It was a wonderful evening, as usual! We were happy to celebrate with all the host families and our exchange students, although every is sad to think that we will soon be saying good-bye to Rafa as she returns to Brazil. A special treat this year was that the student who is visiting this summer from Italy, Martina, was able to join us. The short-term summer exchange program brings a European student to Greenville for a few weeks, and allows a student from Greenville to stay in the European student's home. Bella, from Greenville, will be visiting Martina in her home near Milan.
Our international exchange students and their host siblings:
Nicole, Rafa (from Brazil) Todd Hillgendorff (Greenville Rotary youth exchange officer), Bella (going to Italy), Aaron, Martina (from Italy), Josette, Alex (went to Italy in 2018-19) and Chloe.

Youth Exchange Host Families Needed for 2019-2020

Looking for Host Families for the 2019-2020 School Year

The Greenville Rotary is looking for families who would be interested in hosting an exchange student during the 2019-2020 school year.  Greenville has a wonderful history of hosting an exchange student every year and an integral part of this is finding families to open their homes to youth from around the world.

The fascination and rewards of temporarily hosting a teen from another country is a unique opportunity provided by Rotary Clubs worldwide.  Students come to our community and enroll in GCS for a full year. During that time, they stay with three different families to give them a sense of the diversity of family life in the U.S. The average stay with each family is 3-4 months.

Some families may have children close to the age of the exchange student, some may have older or younger children, others may be childless or empty nesters. Some families may be more interested in sports, others in culture. The only requirements are a separate bed for the student, open minds and big hearts.

Students are treated as members of the family, not as guests. If your children are assigned chores, your Rotary student can also have family chores. It’s the student’s job to adapt to the family, not vice versa.  By hosting a Youth Exchange student in your home, you’ll make a young person’s dream come true, and you and your family will share an unforgettable and fulfilling experience.

If you are interested in becoming a host family please contact Greenville Rotary Youth Exchange Officer, Todd Hilgendorff.  518-966-5070 ext. 519. hilgendorfft@greenvillecsd.org

Good-Bye Walter Ingalls!

On June 26, Rotarians and family members gathered to recognize Walter Ingalls as he retired from Rotary International after 53 years.  Walter served our club in many roles, most notably as club president and our youth exchange officer.  As the instigator of our successful youth exchange program, Walt is responsible for generations of international friendship among Greenville families and students and the wider world.  He is truly an inspiration and a peacemaker!

Alzheimer's Care Team Seeks Volunteers in Greenville

At our March 14 meeting, we were joined by Renee Mandarano, Volunteer Coordinator for Eddy Alzheimer's Services, who spoke about their Care Teams. The Eddy received a grant from the New York State Department of Health to expand the Care Team program, which had been successful in the Capital District, to the outlying counties of the area. They have established teams in Catskill, Roxbury, Vorheesville, Colunbia County, and other areas. There are 24 teams in the Capital District.
Care teams are usually faith-based and most teams have four people. The Greenville team started with seven people, and is now down to one person, so they are seeking new members. All clients are local residents. The team decides as a group how far to travel, and take turns visiting the clients. There is a three-hour training required. Each team meets every six weeks, and each team member gives two hours of service per month to the clients. The care teams do not offer crisis respite or direct care. They focus on the caregiver, and give companionship and break time to the caregiver by interacting with the person with dementia. They might do activities such as adult coloring, looking at photo albums, and the like. The Greenville team currently has four clients. Everything is planned six weeks in advance. Care team members can also connect clients with additional services. Catholic Charities has funds available to pay for direct care. There is a national shortage of home health workers at the present time. Clients are identified through Catholic Charities or through the Alzheimer's Association. For more information, or to volunteer for the Greenville Care Team, Renee can be contacted at 518-238-4162 or Renee.Mandarano@sphp.com.

Greenville Youth Soccer Programs

story thumbnail
At our March 7, meeting, we were joined by Jason Reinhard and Jared McAneny from the Greenville Youth Soccer program. Jason reported that 250 children from kindergarten through ninth grade are involved in the summer program . They play 12 games against teams from Cairo. The cost is $40 for each player, $30 for those under six years,. with a family maximum payment of $100. They play on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday at the Vanderbilt Town Park. The town and the league recently added another soccer field to the town park, on the western side of the existing field. They were helped by GNH Lumber, K&B Enterprises, and Greene County. All coaches are volunteers. Each team is sponsored by a local business for a cost of $150. This pays for shorts, t-shirts, and socks for each player . There are currently 15 teams. Sponsorships are available. The club voted to sponsor a team this summer. Jason will drop the application off to Robin at the bank. Doing this will further our goals of helping the youth and spreading awareness of Rotary in our community. Jared reported on the travel soccer program. This was started three years ago. Previously youth from Greenville who wished to play soccer at a more competitive level joined with students from Coxsackie in the Henry Hudson program. Greenville Travel Soccer does not compete with the summer recreational program. They play in the fall, winter, and spring. There are no cuts to the teams. They work to keep the costs minimal, as play at this level is family funded. They program has increased from one team to 11 teams this spring, with ages from U10 to U19.
Both the recreational summer soccer and the travel soccer programs help to strengthen the competitiveness of our school teams.

St. John's University Medical Brigade - Catherine Sielaff speaks to club

At our February 22 meeting, Catherine Sielaff, a St. John's University student who is also a GCS graduate and attended RYLA as a student, spoke to the club about the community service work she has been doing .  Each St. John's student is required to participate in a service program.  Catherine has traveled to Italy, where she volunteered at a refugee camp outside of Rome, and to Greece, where she worked in a shipping port with a baking company which provided baked goods and a baking school for people there.  Greece has a 25% percent unemployment rate.  This year, she is planning to travel to Nicaragua with the St. John's Global Medical Brigade.
According to their website, Global Medical Brigade at St. John's is "an international movement of students and medical professionals working alongside local communities and staff to implement sustainable health systems. We work in remote, rural, and under resourced communities in Honduras, Panama, Nicaragua and Ghana who would otherwise have limited to no access to health care. Each community receives a brigade every 3 to 4 months where hundreds of patients are provided access to healthcare and volunteers deliver public health workshops. Electronic patient records are collected for future visitations and to monitor overall community health trends. In conjunction with our Medical Program, Global Brigades also supports communities with economic development, sanitation and clean water projects, and uniquely implements these programs in a holistic model to meet a community’s health and economic goals. Our model systematically builds community ownership and collaboratively executes programs with the end goal of sustainably evolving to a relationship of impact monitoring. To learn more, please visit www.globalbrigades.org. "
The group is currently trying to raise $100,000 for medical and sanitary supplies to bring with them to Nicaragua.  They are planning to bring items such as blood pressure equipment and toothbrushes.  They are working with corporate sponsors - for example, they will purchase 50,000 toothbrushes, and Colgate-Palmolive will donate an additional 25,000 toothbrushes.
All the Rotarians in attendance were impressed with Catherine's passion and presentation, and agreed that her project fullfills our goals as a club, as well as meeting the goals of Rotary International's avenues of service.  Rotary's areas of focus for service are as follows:
  • Promoting peace
  • Fighting disease
  • Providing clean water
  • Saving mothers and children
  • Supporting education
  • Growing local economies
It is clear that the St. John's University Global Medical Brigade project in Nicaragua meets most of these areas.  At our March 1 meeting, the club voted to donate $200 to this project.
Below, Catherine Sielaff is pictured with Rotarian Todd Hilgendorff, who was her principal when she attended Greenville High School.

Rotarians Learn About Volunteer Opportunities with the Greene County Department of Human Services

Ruth Pforte, of the Greene County Department of Human Services, was our speaker at the December 21 meeting. Ms. Pforte is the coordinator for volunteer services. She spoke about the various volunteer opportunities for local folks to serve our seniors. She also encourages older adults to stay active and involved by volunteering. The RSVP program offers a variety of volunteer jobs, including meal site help, meal delivery, crafting, medical transportation, telephone reassurance. Volunteers can also help at local agencies, such as the Athens Cultural Center, Community Action, Community Hospice, Chamber of Commerce, Greene Medical Arts, libraries, and nursing homes. In 2016, 275 volunteers gave 22,000 hours, served 54,533 meals and provided 2,072 rides.
Currently, the most urgent need for volunteers is for medical transportation. Volunteer commitment can be as little as two hours per month.
The Department of Human Services also offers seniors assistance with state, federal and county programs as well as providing the hamlet bus for transportation.
One of our programs is the Senior Angels, which gives aid to seniors with no local family members, such as holiday gifts, Thanksgiving dinner, and emergency assistance.
The Greenville Rotary Club presented Ms. Pforte with a check for the Senior Angels program.
The Rotary members also serve local seniors on their own time - our member Bill Von Atzingen is currently a driver for meal delivery, and Walt Ingalls has delivered meals in the past. Our server at the Mountainview Brasserie, Emily Fagan, was instrumental in bringing the hamlet bus to Greenville as part of her Girl Scout Silver Award project!

Greenville Rotary-Sponsored Educational Materials in Use by Greene County Sheriff

At our October 26 meeting, we were pleased to have as our speaker Lieutenant Tracey Quinn from the Greene County Sheriff’s Office.   Lt. Quinn presented the Law Publication materials which were sponsored by our Rotary Club, along with other local businesses.  These materials are being distributed to local children and adults at community events, fairs, and the department hopes to have them shared through local schools.  The printed booklets and comics are designed to be preventative in nature.  Quinn thanked our club for its support, and suggested if we would like to continue to support the educational programs of the department, we could sponsor a child to attend the New York State Sheriffs’ Institute summer camp on Keuka Lake.  Each summer the department sends 20 local children to the camp.
Lt. Quinn also spoke about the opioid addiction epidemic in our area, which is an interest of our club.  Greene County has the third highest rate of drug addiction in New York State.  Most opioid addicts begin with prescription drugs, and then move on to heroin as the prescription drugs are too expensive to obtain.  Fentanyl is used to cut the heroin, which creates the danger for overdose.  The Sheriff’s office is concerned that we may soon have a meth problem our area, as addicts may turn to methamphetamine because they are afraid of dying.
Club members asked many questions of Lt. Quinn, and discussed what additional activities we could do to impact this problem.  It was decided to ask Marty Kelly of Kelly’s Pharmacy to speak at a future meeting in order to educate us further.

John Ingalls Honored during District Governor Visit; Second Shelter Box Sent to Disaster Victims

At our meeting on October 12, our new District 7210 Governor, Jim Damiani, visited our club meeting.  Mr. Damiani hails from the Nanuet/West Nyack Rotary Club and is a real estate agent with Better Homes and Gardens Rand Realty.
During his visit, DG Damiani and past president of our club , John Ingalls, installed Jessica Snyder as a  new member.  Ms. Snyder is the owner/manager o f Snyder Property Management in Greenville.
In a special ceremony, John Ingalls was presented with a Paul Harris fellowship to recognize his long term contributions to the Rotary Club of Greenville and the Greenville community.  Mr. Ingalls was president of the Greenville Rotary Club from 2013 to 2017.  In order to receive the award, which is named after the founder of Rotary International, Paul Harris, a significant donation must be made to the Rotary Foundation.  Our club decided to make this donation on Ingalls’ behalf to recognize his exceptional service to the club, as well as to honor his belief in the tremendous value of the humanitarian work of The Rotary Foundation.  Ingalls is an owner of GNH Lumber, Inc., a graduate of Sage College and a veteran of the US Navy.
It was also noted that Mark Wilcox, vice president of the Greenville Rotary Club, has achieved a memorable 32 years of perfect attendance at Rotary meetings.
A successful wine auction was held at the meeting, in order to raise funds for the club to sponsor a second Shelter Box to provide housing and necessities for victims of the latest hurricane in Puerto Rico and the fires in California.  The Rotary Club had previously purchased a Shelter Box to help with the storm in Texas.   Sturdy green ShelterBoxes contain family-sized tents specially designed to withstand the elements and provide people with temporary shelter until they are able to start the process of rebuilding a home. ShelterKits contain all of the essential tools people need to start repairing and rebuilding homes straight away, as well as the items that help transform shelter into a home, like cooking sets, solar lights and activity sets for children.
District Governor Damiani noted in his after-dinner speech that Shelter Box, an organization founded, staffed, and run by volunteer Rotarians, is active in ten different countries right now.  He stated that that is proof that Rotarians take on tough challenges.  Due to the work of the Rotary Foundation and Rotarians around the world, there were only eight cases of polio world wide last year.  This is compared to 350,000 cases 30 years ago when Rotary took on the challenge of eradicating the disease.  The organization has committed to provide $1.2 billion over the next few years to finish the fight against polio.
Damiani reminded our club that under the leadership of the new Rotary International president, Ian Risely, Rotary has faced the problem of our changing environment.  Risely has challenged each Rotarian to plant a tree before Arbor Day of 2018.  One tree absorbs 40 pounds of carbon per year, so with 1.2 million new trees planted in the next few months can make a huge impact on the carbon in our atmosphere.   The Greenville Rotary has accepted this challenge, and is planning a tree planting in a public area as well as on private property, under the leadership of club member Robert Snyder.

Rotary Club of Greenville Welcomes New Exchange Student, Leadership

Greenville Rotarians began their program year by welcoming new officers to the club, and welcoming a new youth exchange student to town.  A new board of directors was installed on August 31.   John Ingalls, who has been president of the club for several years, relinquished his gavel to Cecile Plattner.  Mark Wilcox will take over as vice president, and LouAnn Dolce and Robin Frechette will continue as secretary and treasurer, respectively.  Dianne Lewis will take over as sergeant-at-arms from Wilcox.
On September 7, the club was joined by this year’s exchange student, Johann from Germany.  Johann comes from northern Germany, near Hamburg.  He is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Rotenburg.  Johann will be living with three different families in the school district this year.  Currently, he is a member of the varsity soccer team at GCS.  He thinks our school is very friendly and different from school in Germany.
On August 31, Hurricane Harvey was battering the Gulf coast of Texas.  The Rotary Club members voted to sponsor a Shelter Box to help the people there.   On September 7, as Hurricane Irma threatened Florida, the Rotarians were pleased to hear that Shelter Box is preparing to assist there as well.  Shelter Box is an international disaster relief charity that provides immediate emergency shelter and other lifesaving aid to survivors of a disaster or humanitarian crisis.  Shelter Box aid is tailored to each disaster, but typically includes a tent, thermal blankets and  groundsheets, water purification equipment, solar lights, cooking utensils, a tool kit, mosquito nets, and children’s activity packs.  In Houston, Shelter Box tents are being used to provide privacy to families who are living in large shelters such as the convention center.  Rotarians from the Hudson Valley who volunteer with a Shelter Box response team have recently been deployed to Florida from Texas.

Four students from Greenville High School and three local families were honored at the June 22, 2017 meeting of the Greenville Rotary Club for their participation in the Rotary International Youth Exchange program. The four students--Oswald, Grace, Alex G., and Alex C.-- are living out Rotary’s goal of international friendship.
Oswald, who is visiting Greenville from his home in Taiwan, spoke about his experiences during the past school year. Originally disappointed that he would be living in a rural community rather than in New York city, he now says he would never want to come to New York State without visiting Greenville. His favorite experience in Greenville was participating in team sports and the friendships he made with classmates and fellow athletes. After leaving Greenville, Oswald will be traveling the USA with other exchange students in an optional Rotary-sponsored tour. The McAneny, Content/Young and Hutchins/Churchill families were honored for hosting Oswald in their homes during the past school year.
Alex G. is participating in the Summer Exchange Experience, a new Rotary Youth Exchange program. For three weeks this summer, Alex and her family will welcome Carla, a student from south central France.  Then Alex will travel to France to stay with Carla’s family for three weeks.
Alex C. is one of two local students who will be abroad for 10 months during the upcoming school year. She will live in center city Milan, Italy, staying with a host family of five and attending a high school for the classics. Alex is particularly pleased to be going to Milan because of her intense interest in the fashion industry.  She is also looking forward to the Rotary’s European tour next summer.
Grace will be living in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, in the Canary Islands. The Canary Islands are an autonomous community of Spain, located in the Atlantic Ocean off the northwestern coast of Africa. Las Palmas, the most populous city in the Canary Islands and the ninth largest city in Spain, has a population of nearly 400,000. Grace is excited both to be living in a large city and to be near the beach! She will be studying at a social sciences high school and is pleased to know that there will be another American Rotary exchange student in school with her. Her host Rotary club in the Canary Islands is welcoming five exchange students, who will frequently fly to mainland Spain for Rotary events.
Judy Goodsell, the Greenville Rotary Club volunteer who directs the local Youth Exchange Program, was also honored at the meeting.  She was presented with a certificate for advancing world peace from Rotary District 7210 by the district youth exchange officers, Nan and David Greenwood.
One of the highlights of the evening was a talk by Emma McAneny, a Greenville Rotary Youth Exchange student in 2009. Emma spent 10 months living and studying in the suburbs of Milan, Italy, in a town on Lake Como.  She thanked the Rotary Club for the transformational experience of complete immersion in another culture. The rich art and history of Italy sent her on a journey that led to her current path in life as an architecture student.  Emma also credits her exchange experience with teaching her the quality of persistence.
The Rotary-sponsored student exchange activities are supported in part by the current “flamingo flocking” money-earning project. For more information about Rotary, visit our Facebook page,  or join our meetings at the Mountainview Brasserie each Thursday at 6 p.m.

RYLA Leadership Conference Participants Selected

If you're wondering where the money raised by our roaming flamingo flock is being used, here is one example:

Christine and Lenore have been selected to represent Greenville High School and the Greenville Rotary Club at this year’s annual Rotary Youth Leadership Award and conference. RYLA is a program that originated with Rotary International and has subsequently been adopted by our local Rotary. RYLA encourages service leadership in youth by recognizing and rewarding deserving 11th grade students who are chosen to attend the RYLA conference as an “award” for their past and present leadership and service activities. Christine and Lenore are important members of our Interact Club which is why they were selected. They will attend an all-expense paid camp where they will be inspired by a diverse group of exceptional speakers, make life-long friends through fellowship activities and discuss ethical and social issues that affect our students and communities today. Congratulations to Christine and Lenore! #GHSBlog#I'vebeenflocked#flamingosatwork

The Flamingos Have Landed!

Posted on May 24, 2017
Our flock of flamingos has made its first landing in our community at the home of Sara and Brian on Route 403.   Thanks to Todd Hilgendorf and Dianne Lewis for sponsoring the first flocking!  If you would like to prank a friend or neighbor by having them wake up to flamingos in their yard, download the forms on the left and submit them to any Rotarian with your payment.  We are working on getting a Pay Pal button set up so that people can submit their flocking requests on our site.  If you absolutely hate flamingos, and shudder at the thought of them living on your lawn for a week, you can purchase "anti-flocking insurance" for only $10!

April 27 meeting

At our April 27 meeting, we were pleased to welcome six members of the Rotary Club of Windham. Diana Lawrence, the president of the Windham Club, spoke about their projects. This year, they sponsored one student to attend the Rotary Youth Leadership Academy. Some of the events they sponsor are a paper shredding event, the Mountaintop Dog Day (which will be held August 5 at CD Lane Park), and the Pole Star youth fishing and hunting program. They also support two food pantries and distribute dictionaries in the elementary school Last December, the Windham Rotary packed 21 boxes for Operation Christmas Child. Working with the VFW, they install a flag pole at the Windham Path.
During the meeting, a Rotary pin auction was held, with the income of over $200 split between the two clubs.

Before the meeting, members gathered to celebrate the spring resettlement of our "Greenville Duck," Paul Harris.  Paul is now back in his summer home outside the Mountainview Brasserie.

Middleburgh Rotary Club Visit

We were visited by 15 members of the Middleburgh Rotary club on April 20, 2017.  A special Rotary pin was auctioned off, and the proceeds were split between the two clubs.  Wes Andrews, president of the Windham club, shared with us the events and activities that their very active club undertakes.  They organize an Arts and Crafts show, Harvest Festival, Canoe and Kayak Regatta, Triathlon, and a 5K road race.  Additionally, at the holiday season they deliver poinsettias to shut-ins and decorate the parking meters in the village with candy canes.  They support two food pantries and participate in the Memorial Day presentation.  This year they are again participating in the youth exchange program.  The Middleburgh club applied for and received a district grant to buy banners for the village recognizing veterans, welcoming visitors to town, and encouraging people to shop local.  Then Judy Goodsell presented the activities that our club organizes, emphasizing our very successful youth programs.

Terry Buel of the Mountainview Brasserie

At our February 23 meeting, Terry Buel, on of the co-owners of the Mountainview Brasserie, gave an interesting presentation on the challenges and rewards of their business and the restaurant industry. She attributed the success of the restaurant to the passion of the chef and co-owner, Max Suhner, and the loyalty and word of mouth recommendations of their guests. Terry was photographed with club president John Ingalls.
