At our March 7, meeting, we were joined by Jason Reinhard and Jared McAneny from the Greenville Youth Soccer program. Jason reported that 250 children from kindergarten through ninth grade are involved in the summer program . They play 12 games against teams from Cairo. The cost is $40 for each player, $30 for those under six years,. with a family maximum payment of $100. They play on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday at the Vanderbilt Town Park. The town and the league recently added another soccer field to the town park, on the western side of the existing field. They were helped by GNH Lumber, K&B Enterprises, and Greene County. All coaches are volunteers. Each team is sponsored by a local business for a cost of $150. This pays for shorts, t-shirts, and socks for each player . There are currently 15 teams. Sponsorships are available. The club voted to sponsor a team this summer. Jason will drop the application off to Robin at the bank. Doing this will further our goals of helping the youth and spreading awareness of Rotary in our community. Jared reported on the travel soccer program. This was started three years ago. Previously youth from Greenville who wished to play soccer at a more competitive level joined with students from Coxsackie in the Henry Hudson program. Greenville Travel Soccer does not compete with the summer recreational program. They play in the fall, winter, and spring. There are no cuts to the teams. They work to keep the costs minimal, as play at this level is family funded. They program has increased from one team to 11 teams this spring, with ages from U10 to U19.
Both the recreational summer soccer and the travel soccer programs help to strengthen the competitiveness of our school teams.
