Greenville Rotarian Bill Von Atzingen was honored for 60 years of Service Above Self on September 19. He joined the Greenville Rotary in 1959, serving in a variety of positions over the years. He is pictured here with his wife, Suzanne. Before his retirement, Von Atzingen was the owner of Von's Department Store (formerly on Main Street in Greenville) and a founding partner of STG , the firm which developed the Greenville Country Estates.

Here he is thanking his grandson, Will Von Atzingen, who recalled stories of growing up with his grandfather and the life lessons Bill imparted, including the all-important method of eating Oreo cookies! On a more serious note, Will thanked his grandfather for teaching him that, "taking some time and using it to do something constructive is priceless and more impactful than a dollar." | |
.JPEG) Bill's son-in-law, Mark Quackenbush, roasted the six-decade Rotarian. Using the four-way-test as an example, he reviewed the highlights (or lowlights?) of Bill's life. Whether or not Bill passed the test remains to be seen. However, Quackenbush summed up by honoring his father-in-law for having "treated me with kindness and respect and provided me with some much needed wisdom and advice." .JPEG) Greenville Rotary member Mark Wilcox emcee'd the event. He read a letter from Rotary District 7210 Governor, Cindie Kish, who wrote to Bill that, "you have shown through your leadership the true measure of "Service Above Self" and lead by example to your club and members of your community what it means to be a Rotarian." |
