President's Night is a night to celebrate the passing of the Rotary torch from our outgoing President, Orett Douglas, to our new incoming President, Dale Rowe. ROTARY TRAIN ORILLIARotary Club of Orillia’s Minature “Steam” Train “The Mariposa Railway” Orillia business man, Gord Smith, originally owned and operated a miniature “steam” train calling it “The Mariposa Railway” located behind “pav” (corner of Jarvis and Maple) opposite Couchiching Beach Park. Built in 1854 by Armitage Hershell at their North Tonawanda, NY, facility. Originally operated on Toronto’s Centre Island and later at LaSalle Park in Hamilton, and Brittania Park, Ottawa. Restored several times over the years and boiler replaced to meet safety standards of the day. Failure to reach an agreement with the City of Orillia for a new extended route through Couchiching and Centennial Parks, the railway was offered for sale. Rather than see the train leave the city, the local Rotary club became involved in 1980 after the Parks Commission suggested a service club might be the only operator likely to be considered. Following an appeal from local Chamber of Commerce, the Park’s commission and the City approved the operation of a steam train on a one quarter mile figure eight track in Centennial Park. |
END POLIO NOW 2019
October 26th, out Rotary volunteers stood outside Canadian Tire in Orillia collecting donations and handing out buttons. This year, we were able to raise just over $500. Thank you to all that took time out of your Saturday to help raise awareness and collect donations!

Rotary Clubs to Join ForcesWELCOME!.png) As of September 1st, Orillia's two Rotary Clubs are coming together to form one, bigger, stronger club, to provide community service and fundraising locally and internationally. Anne Ziegler, President of the Rotary Club of Orillia, is thrilled with this development. "By joining forces, we will be able to do more here in Orillia and with international projects." Anne will continue in her role as President of the newly amalgamated club. Members of the smaller, Rotary Club of Orillia Lake Country are also excited by the prospects of being part of a bigger club. "The Lake Country club was formed by members who struggled to make the lunch hour meeting, often because they worked out of town. The morning club was established 10 years ago however, recruiting new members to join us at 7 am has been challenging. The new "cocktail meeting" of the Orillia club makes it possible for our members to continue in Rotary. Most are happy to give up the weekly 7 am breakfast meeting in favour of this after work opportunity." The amalgamated "Rotary Club of Orillia" will continue to have two, convenient Tuesday meeting times at the Best Western Mariposa Inn. Lunch meeting 12:00-1:30 and cocktail meeting 5:15-6:30. Guests are welcome, however are encouraged to check the web site schedule in case the club is meeting offsite on that day. |
