Benjamin Giroux’s poem celebrates the differences in all of us. The poem I am Odd, I am New went viral and is now being turned into a children’s book. Benjamin, who has Aspergers, a form of autism, wrote the poem five years ago, when he was 10, for a class assignment. Since then, the poem has been translated into more than 21 languages and has been turned into songs. Benjamin said he’s surprised by the reaction, but hopes the book will make as big as an impact as his poem. The book is set to be released Sept. 28 by Shiffer Publishing. You may have heard of the purple loosestrife, garlic mustard, Asian longhoned beetle and Emerald ash borer. These are commonly referred to as invasive species, and there are both aquatic and terrestrial invasive species that damage their respective forest and water environments. Ponds, lakes and rivers become clogged with invasive plants, while trails become overrun and native species outcompeted. The Adirondack Park Invasive Plant Program (APIPP) serves as the Adirondack Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management (PRISM), one of eight PRISMs across New York. APIPP is a partnership program founded in 1998 by The Nature Conservancy, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC), New York State Department of Transportation and New York State Adirondack Park Agency, and it is housed under the Adirondack Chapter of The Nature Conservancy. The APIPP works to minimize the impact of terrestrial invasive plants and animals in the Adirondacks. Emily-Bell Dinan, Education and Outreach Coordinator for APIPP, will discuss terrestrial invasive species in our community. ************************************************** Ordering Lunch for Wednesday Meetings -- Quick Link to OrderTrevor and staff serve up three combo lunches for the Rotary meeting each Wednesday. The Battle of Plattsburgh, also known as the Battle of Lake Champlain, ended the final British invasion of the northern states of the United States during the War of 1812. An army under Lieutenant General Sir George Prévost and a naval squadron under Captain George Downie converged on the lakeside town of Plattsburgh, New York, which was defended by New York and Vermont militia and detachments of regular troops of the United States Army, all under the command of Brigadier General Alexander Macomb, and ships commanded by Master Commandant Thomas Macdonough. Downie's squadron attacked shortly after dawn on 11 September 1814, but was defeated after a hard fight in which Downie was killed. (Wikipedia) Keith Herkalo, president of the Battle of Plattsburgh Association and author of the The Battles at Plattsburgh: September 11, 1814 (2012, The History Press), will speak to Rotary about the fate of the British fleet. ************************************************** Please Note: The Board of Directors of the Rotary Club of Plattsburgh has decided that the weekly meeting will return to virtual broadcast via Zoom for the next several weeks due to increasing cases of COVID-19 in Clinton County. In Keeseville, a trio of 19th century bridges that have sat abandoned for years are the focus of a growing community effort to preserve history. Throughout the village, you’ll find signs that read “Save Our Historic Bridges!”, and an online petition has managed to gather over 2,300 signatures. All three bridges — the Upper Bridge, the Swing Bridge and the Old State Road Bridge — have historical significance, and all three are listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. The main hurdle is getting both Essex and Clinton County to work together and find either federal funding or grant funding that will cover 80 percent of the cost of the bridges, and finding a way to reduce the remaining 20 percent that the counties would have to pay for. Steven Englehart of Adirondack Architectural Heritage will update the club on the effort to get funding dedicated for the repairs. ************************************************** Please Note: The Board of Directors of the Rotary Club of Plattsburgh has decided that the weekly meeting will return to virtual broadcast via Zoom for the next several weeks due to increasing cases of COVID-19 in Clinton County. Many North Country residents have received flyers toting the value of community solar farms. And, most Americans aren’t able to put solar panels on their residences or businesses for a variety of reasons. Community solar fixes this problem through the installation of a locally situated and shared solar farm that is connected to the electricity grid. Residential and commercial customers can subscribe to a solar farm, meaning they agree to purchase electricity credits generated by the array. For more than three generations, the Hamilton family has been serving communities in the North Country. This tradition of service has taken various forms over the years and continues today with the future development of a local, community-based solar farm. While the HamilSun Community Solar Farm, which will be located in Peru, is still in development, the solar farm will utilize lands not suitable for agriculture and will bring the benefits of renewable energy while providing a financial benefit to local families and businesses in our community. Mark Hamilton along with Jim Kurtz and Mike Roach (RER Energy/Sunvestments) will discuss with the club this Wednesday the value of community solar farms. ************************************************** Please Note: The Board of Directors of the Rotary Club of Plattsburgh has decided that the weekly meeting will return to virtual broadcast via Zoom for the next several weeks due to increasing cases of COVID-19 in Clinton County. Nov. 24, 2021 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m.
Rotary International has been working to eradicate polio for more than 35 years. Our goal of ridding the world of this disease is closer than ever. As a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, Rotary has reduced polio cases by 99.9 percent since our first project to vaccinate children in the Philippines in 1979. Rotary members have contributed more than $2.1 billion and countless volunteer hours to protect nearly 3 billion children in 122 countries from this paralyzing disease. Rotary’s advocacy efforts have played a role in decisions by governments to contribute more than $10 billion to the effort. Today, polio remains endemic only in Afghanistan and Pakistan. But it’s crucial to continue working to keep other countries polio-free. If all eradication efforts stopped today, within 10 years, polio could paralyze as many as 200,000 children each year. PDG Dr. Deepak Purohit is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon and has done Polio surgeries for over 20 years through Rotary in and around RID 3131 and in various districts of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar. Dr. Purohit joined the Rotary Club of Panvel in 1989 and was District Governor in RID 3131 (2009-10). PDG Purohit will discuss the latest info concerning Polio. ************************************************** Please Note: The Board of Directors of the Rotary Club of Plattsburgh has decided that the weekly meeting will return to virtual broadcast via Zoom for the next several weeks due to increasing cases of COVID-19 in Clinton County.
