Rotary International President-elect Stephanie Urchick announced that the 2024-25 presidential theme is The Magic of Rotary and called on members to recognize and amplify the organization’s power to save lives.“Don’t misunderstand me – we are not going to end polio or bring peace to the world by waving a wand and saying some funny words,” Urchick told incoming district governors at the Rotary International Assembly on 8 January. “It’s up to you. You create the magic with every project completed, every dollar donated, and every new member.”

Incoming Rotary International President Shekhar Mehta has announced the 2021-22 presidential theme – 'Serve to Change Lives'. He has urged members to become more involved in service projects, saying that caring for and serving others is the best way to live because it changes not only other people’s lives, but also our own. During his theme address to incoming district governors at the Rotary International Assembly on 1 February, he said that Rotary kindled a spark within him to look beyond himself and embrace humanity. “Service became a way of life for me and I, like many others, adopted the guiding philosophy that ‘Service is the rent I pay for the space I occupy on this earth, and I want to be a good tenant of this earth.”

| The D9510 Conference Committee wishes to announce that the inaugural D9510 Conference will be held from the afternoon of Friday 16th April 2021 to 12:30pm Sunday, 18th April 2021 in Bendigo. The Conference Committee headed up by Rotarian Arthur Manser from the Rotary Club of St Peters is promising to deliver a dynamic line up of interesting speakers and entertainment that we know you will enjoy and provide many opportunities for fellowship. After 42 years apart, our two Districts are re-joining on 1st July. Fittingly, our theme for the inaugural 9510 Conference is Moving Forward Together. Registrations will be open in the new Rotary year once our Districts’ ClubRunner databases have been merged into one. Until then we suggest you secure your plans to join us in Bendigo. To make the Conference a great success we welcome any offers of advertising sponsorship or in kind contributions from your business networks. Please do not hesitate to contact Conference Chair, Arthur Manser amanser@bigpond.net.au or myself if you wish to discuss. The latest conference details will be updated on the new D9510 website and we are hoping by April 2021 our conference will be free of COVID restrictions. |

In October 2019, the Rotary International Board of Directors made changes to the Rotary Code of Policies related to Rotaract. These changes elevate Rotaract by making Rotaractors full partners in service, alongside Rotarians in taking action to improve communities at home and around the world. Effective from July 1st 2020, Rotaract Clubs will be able to chose the sponsor relationship that best meets their needs. New Rotaract Clubs can chose to organise with or without a sponsor. Existing Rotaract Clubs can continue to be sponsored by a Rotary Club, or decide with their sponsor club to end the arrangement. The Board also removed the upper age limit for membership in Rotaract. Rotaract Clubs will now be open to all young adults at least 18 years old. Rotaractors can still have dual membership in both a Rotaract and a Rotary Club. Rotary Clubs are encouraged to continue promoting dual membership by inviting Rotaract members to their Club meetings and events, as well as attending and supporting Rotaract initiatives. By maintaining a positive relationship between Rotary and Rotaract Clubs, we are creating a stronger Rotary.

Over recent months we have all seen the disastrous bushfires that have erupted across Australia, taking a number of lives as well as destroying hundreds of homes and properties. In South Australia the Adelaide Hills and Kangaroo Island have been particularly affected. The survivors in many communities are now struggling as they are face the massive task of cleaning up and rebuilding. These bush fire victims need our support! Rotarians in this State have established the South Australian Bushfire Relief Appeal, which is now a recognised and tax-deductible Rotary Australia World Community Service (RAWCS) Fund. | At this busy time of the year, it is all too easy for us to forget about those in our community who are less fortunate than ourselves. For some very needy families the exchange of presents is impossible and even providing food can be a struggle. For a number of years our Club has tried to assist these less well off individuals and families. This year we are donating 20 large, family food hampers, which will be distributed through the Food Bank organisation. Hopefully this will bring some Christmas cheer to some of those in need. |

After dedicated fundraising and a District Grant, our Rotary Club was recently able to assist in the purchase of an All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) for the Glenelg Surf Life Saving Club. This robust and purpose-built little vehicle will improve the mobility of the Life Savers and so add to the safety of our beautiful and popular local beach. The ATV was handed over to the Surf Life Saving Club at the start of the busy summer season. Our Club is very proud to be involved in this important local community project.

Our Club Wine Bottling Event will take place at Langmeil Winery (Cnr. Langmeil and Para Roads, Tanunda) on Saturday, October 26th 2019. We will be labelling a Cabernet Sauvignon and a Shiraz, both from the 2018 vintage. These wines will be available to Club members at $150 per dozen. Mixed dozens and half dozens can also be ordered. This is a very enjoyable social event - the labelling and packaging will be followed by a self-catered BBQ lunch in the Winery's attractive gardens. Family and friends are very welcome. Music has been an important part of leading an ordinary life for students at the Music School for Children With Disabilities in Honor of Paul Harris in Lublin, Poland. Founded by Rotary members, the school serves 20 students with various disabilities, including Down syndrome, autism, and visual impairments. The Rotary Club of Lublin-Centrum-Maria Curie-Sklodowska has provided funding with help from Rotary Foundation Matching Grants and the Henryk Wieniawski Musical Society, which houses the school. After their son Mateusz was born with underdeveloped eyes, Mariusz and Joanna Kania looked for ways to help him be active. When he showed an aptitude for music, they looked for a teacher and were thrilled to find the Paul Harris music school.

For years, Angalia Bianca had slept in abandoned buildings throughout Chicago. She stole. She did drugs. She spent time in and out of jail for forgery, theft, trespassing, and possession of narcotics. But after she landed in prison for the seventh time, something changed -- Bianca knew she wanted a better life. She just didn’t know how to make it happen. After serving her time, Bianca sought help from a local homeless organization, A Safe Haven, and moved to its shelter in the Rogers Park neighborhood. Bianca followed the program closely -- she attended all the required meetings, passed drug tests, and volunteered at every opportunity.

What is it like taking a large team to Africa? It has probably been one of the most rewarding experiences in my life. In mid February, I began leading Rotary members from all over the East Coast of the United States through Ghana. I’ve tried to give the team a warm Ghanaian welcome like I’ve received on my earlier trips. A large trip is a real blessing because each person sees Ghana and our work in a different way. A highlight for the team was greeting the chief of Sagadugu. The team got excited about buying goats and food for children in the villages where I support eight churches. It was good to see the pastors of most of the eight churches, and I had to explain that we were just passing through on our way to Bolgatanga.

Throughout India and around the world, Rotary clubs are celebrating a major milestone: India has gone three years without a new case of polio. The last reported case was a two-year-old girl in West Bengal on 13 January 2011. To mark this historic triumph, Rotary clubs illuminated landmarks and iconic structures throughout the country with four simple but powerful words, "India is polio free." The three-year achievement sets the stage for polio-free certification of the entire Southeast Asia region by the World Health Organization. The Indian government also plans to convene a polio summit in February to commemorate this victory in the global effort to eradicate polio.
