Our building project at the Community (Hodge Podge) Gardens in Bridgewater is nearing completion. There are some internal fitting out works to come soon. You can see the amazing result in these photographs. Our sincere thanks to Michael Mandale and the team at Tilia Builders Inc for their labour and expertise. Thanks too to Garrett Lauten of Tilia and spouse Chris Sanford (Community Garden Coordinator) for their labour, time and support. Rotarians David Mullins and Wade Garrison did a lot of the heavy lifting assisted by Tim Creedon.

Friendship Exchange is an international exchange program for Rotary members and friends that allows participants to take turns hosting one another in their homes and clubs. This October the Rotary Clubs of Lunenburg and Bridgewater & District will be hosting Rotarians from Washington State and Vancouver Island. Then in May 2018, Lunenburg County Rotarians will travel to the West Coast to be hosted by their new friends. What a great way to experience different cultures and build international friendships! To find out more about Rotary and how you can participate in Club activities, social events, volunteer projects and of course, Friendship Exchange, send an email to HeislerRotary@eastlink.ca. You'll be glad you did!

Two new members of our Club attended their first-ever meeting in July although they have been members for over six months. How did that happen? The answer is simple - modern technology! Last December, Sebelle Deese and Susan Budd indicated they wanted to join our Club but they were scheduled to depart for their winter home in Mississippi and there wasn't enough time to induct them as members before they left. Technology to the rescue as the Club formally inducted them in January via Skype from Mississippi. This gave Susan and Sebelle an opportunity to get involved with the Club despite their physical absence from Nova Scotia. Now that they are back home they were finally able to meet their fellow Rotarians in person at the July 26th Club meeting instead of just seeing them on a computer screen. This is definitely not your grandpa's Rotary Club! Club President Dale Heisler (centre) welcomes Susan Budd (left) and Sebelle Deese (right) to their first club meeting in Bridgewater on July 26th

Tim Creedon was inducted as the Club's newest member at the July 12 meeting. In Tim's case, it's actually "welcome back" as Tim was a member of the Bridgewater & District club before he moved to Alberta. Tim and his family have returned to the South Shore and we're so glad he decided to rejoin our Bridgewater & District Club! Tim is all smiles as he accepts his new member welcome kit from President Dale Heisler.

Sebelle Deese (Rotary Club of Lunenburg) looks on as David Mullins (Rotary Club of Bridgewater & District) distributes Canadian dictionaries/gazetteers to Grade 3 students at Bridgewater Elementary School. Showing off their new gifts are students (L-R) Rayonna Kendal, Isaac Naugler, Zander Roberts and Keesa Henderson. Despite the prevalent use of the internet, educators view these printed reference materials as essential tools in teaching students the first steps in conducting research. This prompted the two local Rotary clubs to work together to purchase and distribute the books to Grade 3 students in the area.

In addition to our assistance to the food banks in New Germany and Mahone Bay, our Club also continued our support of the Bridgewater Interchurch Food Bank. In addition to two freezers we provided last year, we also insulated the food bank building in a successful effort to reduce the cost of heating the structure. On hand to thank President David was John Granville who has been a volunteer at the Bridgewater food bank for the past 17 years.

Our December 12 news release was picked up by the "South Shore Breaker", the local weekly supplement to the Halifax "Chronicle Herald", and ran in the January 14 edition. The local weekly, "LighthouseNOW Progress Bulletin", also ran an abbreviated version of the release in its January 14th edition. Thanks to both newspapers for helping to publicize our work in the community!
