Mime Over Mind

Mar. 11, 2026

Barbara Salsberg Mathews is an artist, educator, and advocate dedicated to living well with Parkinson’s Disease (PD) through the arts. Diagnosed with PD in 2020, she now serves on the Canadian Open Parkinson Network’s Community Advisory Committee. Barbara was the recipient of a grant from Parkinson Canada to fund her production of a free video series based on her “Mime over Mind” project, that uses mime as a therapeutic tool for symptom management. In collaboration with Parkinson’s Europe, she also published “What Parkinson’s Feels Like,” an illustrated paperback and e-book depicting what PD symptoms feel like to people around the world. Barbara also re-illustrated the “5 Stages of Parkinson’s” with young women and men of different ethnicities.

A lifelong creator, Barbara published two children’s books with Annick Press as a teenager, studied mime in Paris and ran her own touring mime company. Barbara graduated from Ontario College of Art [OCADU], earned her M.Ed. from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education and taught visual and dramatic arts in high schools for over 25 years. Since retiring as Head of Visual Art from Toronto Board’s Northern Secondary School, Barbara now lives with her husband in Guelph where she continues to volunteer and create art.
