Environmental Action Committee
Our newest committee is focused on local environment issues. Some of our most recent projects include:
Don River Clean-up
This spring, over 26 members, family members and friends participated in a clean-up of the banks of the Don River at Don Mills Rd and Eglinton Ave. Thanks to our tireless volunteers, we collected over 450 lbs of trash!
Plastic Free July
Plastic Free July® is a global movement that helps millions of people be part of the solution to plastic pollution – so we can have cleaner streets, oceans, and beautiful communities. Our Environmental Action Committee encouraged every RTE member to refuse single-use plastic this month and track and share their efforts.
Tree Planting on Bermundsey Ave Landfill Site
In May, we joined forces with the Rotary Club of East York to help plant native species trees on the landfill site off Bermundsey Ave. This effort helps build a beautiful forest on what was previously industrial use land, and fill.
Proposed Projects
Environmental Minute
Once every month, we will have a quick presentation on current environmental issue and the actions that RTE members can take on an individual level to be part of the solution.
REACHES Program
This proposed project involves a high school environmental action competition. We will reach out to potential champions in a maximum of two (2) schools to determine appetite and appropriate timeline.
Wildflower Garden
We will help remove invasive plant species in a plot in Sherwood Park. This will allow native, pollinator-friendly plants to return.
