Karin Zirk, PhD is the executive director of Friends of Rose Creek, an organization focused on protection, preservation and restoration of the lower Rose Creek and its watershed. Rose Creek is an urban stream that drains a large watershed, including Rose Canyon and San Clemente Canyon (now Marian Bear Park). It runs through central San Diego, connecting neighborhoods like University City and Clairemont to Mission Bay. The organization began in 2004 and has remained committed to a healthy environment for people and wildlife in the watershed. Dr Zirk uses 4 main tools to achieve this goal: cleanups, restoration projects, education and advocacy. They host native plant and wildlife talks and organize regular volunteer activities to improve the creek's health. They participate in citizen science through the app iNaturalist to help document biodiversity of Rose Creek with particular attention to the salt marsh, an ecologically highly valuable area. Dr Zirk will focus her talk on the importance of the watershed, community engagement and challenges she has faced over the last 21years and the future of Rose Creek. Sustainable Fashion
Jan. 06, 2026 6:00 p.m.
With a degree in fashion business Sophie "Phee", Hague spent a decade immersed in the London luxury fashion & lingerie industries before moving to San Diego where in 2020 she founded her sustainable fashion events and services brand, “Positive Phee”. After researching the current fashion cycle and the damage that fast fashion has done to our society & environment, Sophie was motivated to explore a niche for circular fashion events, sustainable styling and upcycling. Positive Phee has an ever-growing network on social media, voted Local Fashion Influencer runner-up by San Diego Reader and is becoming a well known staple on local news channels Fox 5, CBS 8, LOCAListSD and KUSI with 15 appearances and counting in the last 2 years! Through local non-profit, Zero Waste San Diego, Sophie has been able to outreach to the local community with the San Diego Fixit Clinics. Positive Phee’s sustainable styling has been featured in multiple issues of printed magazine VueZ and she has styled runway shows including Fashion Week San Diego (using preloved fashion from Goodwill San Diego), The Bountiful Earth annual event (Voted Best Pop-Up by San Diego Reader) and Yvon’s Non-Profit Fashion Gala Anniversary event. After 4 years in business Positive Phee is best known for her unique “Sip & Style” community events where women pay a flat “Phee” to fill a bag with carefully curated “like new” clothing and enjoy a drink of choice. These events offer an affordable and truly sustainable way to enjoy fashion in a unique, fun and social setting. Environmental Alliance
Jan. 20, 2026 6:00 p.m.
Come meet our newest member. A Kansas City native and serial entrepreneur, Steve has built four successful companies and invented two products that enjoy widespread use. A love of the wild took him to Colorado where he could pursue his personal interests in skiing and climbing, sports that saw him soon become a mountain rescue mission coordinator in Eagle County, Colorado. Steve has climbed all the fourteeners (peaks over 14,000 feet) in Colorado and most of those in his present home state of California. A love of our shared wilderness and desire to keep it as natural as possible inspired him to become a co-founder of Clean Trails and National CleanUp Day. This same ‘pay it forward’ attitude has led him to co-found the Environment Alliance, a non-profit working to empower organizations, businesses, governments, and people to protect the environment for all future generations.
