Our Rotary Club is working with American Legion Post 329 to help homeless veterans get back to work. Used bikes help provide Vets with a means to move forward in their lives from transitional housing... giving Vets a better sense of independence and freedom.
We are seeking helmets, safety vests, locks and reflectors - or donations. Community members are invited to provide gently used or new bicycles to the Operation. Basic repairs can be made. The bikes can be dropped off during business hours or delivered to the Wayside Village Barbershop in Marmora, located at 36 Tuckahoe Road behind the ShopRite on Route 9. The barbershop is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Mondays.

Dr. Ron Shaiko returned to our Rotary Club once again this year to share his insightful annual perspectives on American Politics and Foreign Relations. We always enjoy learning more about trends in our domestic political landscape and living vicariously through his many International Travels (most recently to Kosovo where yes, they still love Americans). Might we see a 3rd party? What regulatory/policy changes will we see?  This year's watch area: North Korea.
Ron graduated from OCHS and the son of Joan Shaiko and the late Tom Shaiko - a longtime Rotarian. Ron is a Senior Fellow and the Associate Director for Curricular and Research Programs at The Nelson A. Rockefeller Center for Public Policy and the Social Sciences at Dartmouth. The 2016-2017 academic year marks his 30th year of university teaching and his 16th year at Dartmouth College.
Time flew by as Ron presented to a crowded house @ Uncle Bill's. The photo below includes just a few of us with Ron (light blue polo shirt) and his Mom, Joan Shaiko with the white necklace, after the meeting adjourned.

Based on the book “Samurai Chess,” Rotary and Mr. Ron Pennington teamed up to teach chess (and life lessons) through the Seven Principles of Samurai.
The Ocean City Rotary Club, part of an international organization, dedicates itself to make positive, lasting changes in the communities in which they serve. “The principles of samurai means to give of one’s service. And Rotary is SERVICE ABOVE SELF,” Scheck said. The pair formed the classes to teach children respect, kindness and the principles of samurai through an ancient game that requires a lot of thought, strategy and patience.

Part of the focus of the classes, Pennington said, is to teach the children the principles he was taught growing up in Ocean City in the 1960s. “We’re using chess as this vehicle to teach what is right and what is wrong, and the consequences for what is right and what is wrong,” he said. “It’s all about choices. If you teach choices on this board and you make them aware that you can develop your own criteria as a child of choices for what is right or wrong based on this ancient game, let’s have them make the mistakes here.”

A fun, casual blue attire event... helping kids in need. For more info on GO BLUE click here.
CASA was founded in 1995 by a woman grieving the death of a foster child who once resided in her home. Having seen first hand the shortcomings of the system, she was compelled to do something to save other children from similar fates. CASA became an independent 501(c)3 organization and expanded the program to include Cape May County in 2001.
Currently, over 1,000 children in Atlantic and Cape May County Child Welfare Systems are eligible for our services. The children range in age from birth to 21 and come from many ethnic backgrounds including 46% Caucasian, 27% African American, 14% Hispanic/Latino, and, 13% multi-racial.
Who are CASA Volunteers? CASA volunteers are everyday people who are appointed by judges to advocate for the best interest of abused and neglected children living within the foster care system. A CASA volunteer advocates for one or two children's cases until they are placed into a safe, permanent home.

Today we shared the first of many "Josh the Baby Otter" books with Pre-K students in Upper Township.

Please stay tuned for more details on this very important Literacy and Water Safety Program - and how you can help. Drowning is preventable. Josh helps to teach children to float like an otter and “stay away from water unless with an adult and to always swim with a buddy!”

Rotary is a worldwide network of inspired individuals who translate their passions into relevant social causes to change lives in communities... in this case, one child at a time.

On Thursday, November 14th, 2013, and Wednesday, November 20th, 2013, members of the Rotary Clubs of Ocean City / Upper Township will provide dictionaries to every 3rd grade student in the Ocean City and Upper Township Primary Schools.  The dictionaries are purchased from the The Dictionary Project and are age appropriate.  As third grade is typically when children transition from learning to read to reading to learn, this is an ideal time for each student to receive a personal dictionary.  While distributing the books, we tell the students about Rotary, its motto and its projects locally and internationally. Our reward is the glowing faces of the students and the endearing letters of thanks in the weeks that follow from both the students and the teachers.

We were honoured to have an amazing speaker... the epitome of Service Above Self: Rocky Gannon

Shortly after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, while he was a junior at Ocean City High School in New Jersey, Rocky enlisted in the Army Air Force at the age of seventeen. He immediately entered pilot training. Soon after his high school class graduated, Rocky graduated from Pilot Training and became a B-17 Flying Fortress pilot. At age twenty he was flying the B-29 Super Fortress.

For the next 37 years, he flew six thousand hours in thirty-four different aircraft, from bombers to transports, from gliders to fighters. He has fifty military awards and decorations including the Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star, ten Air Medals, four Meritorious Service medals and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm. He was a combat pilot in World War II, Korea, the Belgian Congo and 387 combat missions in Vietnam. After World War II, he served three years in the occupation of Iwo Jima and Japan. Fifteen of his thirty-seven years of duty were served overseas. In 1975 he became the U.S. Air Force’s first Master Air Traffic Controller.

After his retirement from the Air Force in 1980, he became an International Aviation Consultant. Later he became the Executive Director of the Florence Regional Airport in Florence, SC, retiring in 1993.

He is active in the community, serving on nine boards and commissions. He is an Eagle Scout and a recipient of the Boy Scouts of America Silver Beaver Award. In 2009, he received Scouting’s highest honor, the "Distinguished Eagle Award”. In 2001 he was named the South Carolina “Aviator of the Year” and inducted into the South Carolina Aviation Hall of Fame.

He has been married to the former Roberta Gause for 60 years. They have three grown children, ten grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Moorlyn Family Theatre
hosted over 30 Rotarians family and friends to a special evening.... Seth Bazacas provided an informative behind the scenes tour of the recent facility upgrades. It is the current vision of the Moorlyn Family Theatre to bring the excitement of live entertainment, quality cinema, and exciting music back to the Ocean City boardwalk - in a brand new way. Featuring fully digitized movie theatres, and a state of the art sound and lighting systems for live events, the Ocean City Tabernacle is ushering in a new era in the rich history of the Moorlyn Family Theatre. We were treated to a preview of Lee Daniels' The Butler ... and some of the youngest participants choose to see Planes.

The Butler tells the story of a White House butler who served eight American presidents over three decades. The film traces the dramatic changes that swept American society during this time, from the civil rights movement to Vietnam and beyond, and how those changes affected this man's life and family. Inspired by a True Story.

Five ears ago, Dana Eislen created the End to End Bike Tour of Ocean City when she was in Ocean City High School.

Now, the event is a staple of the community celebrating its 5th year.

To start off the event, crowd motivator Stephan Clank rode in front and the Ocean City Fire Department. Mayor Jay Gillian, along with his wife and son, rode through town as well.

The cost was $10 to ride which included refreshments and a T-shirt. Sponsors were Johnson's Popcorn, Shriver's, Godfrey Funeral Home, Thomas Heist Insurance, the Rotary Club and the City of Ocean City.

Club adviser Phyllis Turner, President Jayne Snyder and Vice President Katee Blizzard all agreed that the event had a great turn out with 125 participants registered.

The proceeds going to the animal shelter and in previous years the Interact Club has supported various facilities.

My Fellow Rotarians: As you may recall, at the outset of this Rotary Year last July I included at the end of our weekly breakfast/dinner meetings a "Quotable Quote" and/or "Philosophical Ponderable." Subsequently and thankfully our worthy Sergeants-at-Arms (Rich G., Bill M. & Tommy S.), aka "Manny, Moe & Jack," "Larry. Moe & Curley," et al,  adopted this project and introduced a "Quotable" challenge to all our members. Indeed at our meetings since we have enjoyed and been blessed with some great quotes (philosophical. theological, humorous, sports and otherwise). At tonight's meeting Mike Bolicki submitted yet another great quote (from W. Churchill).  While our "Sgts" invite/select/coerce a member each week to give his/her quote, I'm sure it's an open game. At tonight's meeting we decided that the final "Quote Off" will be at at the last meeting of our Rotary Year, June 30; details to be decided. If you have not yet submitted your personally meaningful quote you have a few weeks to do so. The prize, if any, is yet to be determined, but the real prize is knowing that your fellow Rotaians found special personal meaning in your selected words of wisdom. Thank you all for your support of this meaningful and fun project.
