Zoom Delivered Webinar
AB
Canada

Almost everyone can decode words – but almost half of Albertan adults can’t read well enough to apply what they have read in new situations to solve every day problems. The capacity to read well – literacy – is one of the most important skills for living, learning and working. Literacy begins at birth and is gained across the lifespan through reading practice, and lost without it. For people with poor literacy skills, life is harder – on average, they experience poorer health and employment outcomes and are less engaged in their communities.

This session will explain what it means to be literate and why literacy is so important. It will also discuss how everyone – parents, family members, teachers, community members, employers and policy makers – has a role to play in helping others to build and maintain this essential skill.

In this session the audience will learn these 3 things:

  • Why literacy is so important even in the digital age
  • How Albertans perform in literacy assessments
  • How low literacy rates are everyone’s problem to help solve
