Jim and Lynn Washington, Pet Therapy Society of Northern Alberta

On Tuesday we had a visit from Jim and Lynn Washington and their Pet Therapy dog Nova. Jim told us that when he retired from Telus four years ago, he received Nova as a retirement gift from his wife Lynn, who is a retired school teacher. Nova is a seven-year old Dalmatian, who was a Grand Champion show dog for the first three years of his life. In the last few years with Nova, they have regularly visited the Stollery, the Grey Nuns fifth floor and Palliative Care units, and many other places. His wife does a school reading program and she likes to take Nova along for the children to read to, as it puts them more at ease reading out loud to the dog.

The Pet Therapy Society of Northern Alberta is a non-profit society that relies on membership fees, grants and donations for funding. They currently have about one hundred and seventy dogs in their membership and have between seventy and eighty places looking for pet therapy dogs. They are always looking for new pet therapy recruits. The benefits of pet therapy dogs are many, including clinical, physiological, emotional and psychological. Some dogs work with physiotherapy groups, some visit hospitals or schools, nursing homes, airports, correctional facilities and private businesses. The stress busting benefits of pet therapy dogs is endless.

Both the dogs and their handlers must undergo extensive training and evaluation before they are considered qualified. The dogs must be a minimum age of two years and must pass an initial assessment before the training is undertaken. If the dog has the right innate personality and has been socialized well as a puppy, they will be adaptable, sensitive, love people, be good mannered, have good self esteem, be calm and quiet under sometimes stressful situations, be friendly, responsive, patient and predictable. The handlers must be attentive to their dog and surroundings at all times.

For those hoping their dog may some day be a pet therapy dog, socialization when your dog is young is the key. Exposing them to lots of different people, children, seniors, people with disabilities (i.e. with canes, wheel chairs etc.), kids on skateboards, crowds of small boisterous children, loud noises like bursting balloons, and different types of buildings with hard shiny floors, crowds of people, strange equipment, riding on elevators, and different smells is important. Your dog must also have the basic training to be able to walk on a loose leash no more than three feet away, sit stay, down stay, come when called, settle on command, ignore other dogs, cats and people who are working, ignore food and other distractions, especially when on the floor as seniors homes often may have pills on the floor which could be a serious hazard for the dog. If your dog passes the initial assessment, you and your dog must then undergo about six months of training prior to the final assessment. This training teaches both you and your dog how to deal with all kinds of situations and how to keep you, your dog and the people you are visiting with safe at all times. Having your dog’s feet run over by a wheel-chair, or having your dog chase the resident cat down the nursing home hallway is not something you want to happen. Part of this training includes completing six practicums where you and your dog visit six different types of facilities and are assessed by an experienced pet therapy dog handler. Sometimes the dog is perfect, but the handler still needs work.

Jim said that being a pet therapy dog handler is very rewarding and that if he can help someone forget their troubles or their pain for even five minutes, it has been all worthwhile and their job is done. Nova does it for the attention and the treats.

W. P. Wagner Interact Club Report

This past Tuesday we heard from the members of our newest Interact club at W. P. Wagner. President Ore reported that they have had a very good year, with a few first-year bumps along the way.

Their Roses for Valentines fundraiser raised four hundred and forty dollars for their club. They also hosted an Open Mike Nite. Some of their members attended the RYLA and RYLY camps and they said that they learned a lot about how to solve problems that affect their Interact group. They also received an Emerald grant this year and plant to use it to clean up the yard behind the school. They are really looking forward to next year.

J. Percy Page High School Commencement Ceremonies

J. Percy Page High School Commencement Ceremonies

On Tuesday May 14, 2019 at the J. Percy Page High School Commencement Ceremonies, Hamda Ahmed was presented with the Rotary Club of Edmonton Strathcona’s $1,000 Scholarship. The decision to select her for this prestigious award was unanimous from a panel of seven staff members. Her personality, commitment to her studies, engagement in many, many school activities and her amazing community involvement truly exemplify what it means to be a J. Percy Page Ambassador and Rotary Club Representative. By overcoming personal challenges, she has achieved extremely high academic standings, yet was an engaged, incredibly active leader throughout all three of her high school years. Hamda is involved in the Rotary Interact Club, Students’ Union, Key Club, and Earth Club, just to name a few. Along with her tireless involvement at school, she is extremely busy with her volunteer work in her community, which are too numerous to mention, except to say this young lady managed to maintain her rigorous schedule even with a broken leg during the second semester! Hamda has been accepted to the University of Alberta, Augustana Campus, where she will be continuing her studies in September.

Together with the $1000 scholarship, Hamda was also given a token with the Rotary 4-way test on it. The Rotary 4-way test is a meaningful tool to use to make decisions and thus making the world a better place despite differences in belief and opportunities.

The golf will start at 2 PM at the Millwoods Golf Course in Edmonton. [MAP] The 9 hole golf tournament will be a 4 player Texas Scramble. No previous golf experience or skill required. An experienced golfer will be the Team Captain, and the team plays the best ball on each shot. The golf package includes your nine hole green fees, shared power golf cart, practice range balls to warm up, use of the practice putting green, a tee gift which includes 3 Taylor Made golf balls, golf tees, ball marker, divot repair tool and a bottle of water. The golf package cost is $55 per player.

The Barbecue Dinner will start at 5 PM at the Woodvale Community Center at the Millwoods Golf Course. We will have the prime rib burger dinner with buns, fixings & condiments, fries, Caesar salad, coleslaw, vegetable pasta salad, dessert squares, fruit, coffee & tea, and a cash bar. The barbecue dinner package cost is $25 per person.

Free Footie Volunteers Needed: 2019 Spring Season

I am reaching out to your Rotary/Interact Club in efforts to find volunteers for the upcoming Spring Soccer Season.

Our organization is called Free Footie, and we provide an afterschool free soccer program. This upcoming season, we have 11 different game locations located throughout Edmonton with 60 schools participating and close to 2,000 kids playing.

Game Days are Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday from 3:45/4:00 PM – 4:45/5:00 PM.

Season runs from May 6 – June 21^st.

The roles that we have available are Field Marshal, Referees, and Coaches.

The Field Marshal responsibilities include:

Arriving 15-20 minutes before first assigned game.
Inspect field before play to ensure it is free of objects that might be a hazard.
Direct teams to appropriate game field.
Inspect field after play and address teams to clean up before leaving.
Be emergency evacuation lead.
Report any incidents or hazards to Volunteer Manager.

The Referee responsibilities include:

Watch over the game and enforce fair play.
Inspect player equipment and field equipment for safety hazards.
Referee certification would be an asset but not required.

This is a perfect role for someone who is new to refereeing and looking to learn in a less-pressured environment. This position is paid.

The Coaches role is seen as mentor for the kids. Soccer experience isn’t necessary but we do look for volunteers who are looking to be a positive role model/mentor and have had experience with kids.

All volunteers will require a vulnerable sector check from the EPS.
