There are nearly 6,000 people experiencing homelessness in South Australia each year and last week by participating in “Walk a Mile in My Boots” our club showed its support by experiencing what it is like on a cold, winter’s morning to walk one mile to find something to eat, a hot shower and a friendly face. The $30 which each supporter donated can supply a hot breakfast and lunch for two weeks for a person doing it tough. Our total contribution will provide meals for a day for 250 people experiencing homelessness. No person who is homeless should feel like they’re walking alone. Congratulations Rotarians!
Thanks to Katrina who, even though she was unable to join us, skilfully coordinated the registration process for our members, to Rob and Bruce for carrying our banner, to those who donated knowing they would not be joining us for the walk and for everyone who stayed and mingled with Eastwood Club over breakfast. Yes, we did feel hungry waiting for breakfast but perhaps that is all part of the experience!
Webmaster Richard J is currently consolidating our Friends of Rotary emails to enable our club to actively keep in touch with this supported group and ensure they are encouraged to participate and join us in activities. If you have any people you would like to have included on this list please supply to Richard. This will then provide us with a base to call upon and work with.

Dear Angus, I tell you, we continue developing our Program of Scholarships in benefit of young women and young men of Miramar. It is satisfactory to tell you that the most part of our students, when they finish at SENA, they begin to study at the University. It is a success because they continue their educative process in order to be in the future, professionals in the same areas of study that they began in the SENA with help of the Rotary Club of Adelaide Light. Also, all of them are working and at the same time, they apply for educative loans at ICETEX or at the University. I send you by attachment, the certificates of two of the students who finished few weeks ago and now are presenting exams for the University in the same areas they studied at SENA.
I think it is necessary to tell to our Partners of the RC of Adelaide Light, that your contribution has helped a lot to transform the sector of Miramar: Today houses, streets, cars, commerce are different. People is more friendly and we do not find very poor men or women on the streets. One of the interesting aspects supported by our Program of Scholarships has been the conversations I have had with the students in each meeting: I explain them about how to live better in family, at work, on social meetings, how to transform their life and how be a best citizen.
Finally, my Rotary Club send to all of you, our gratitude because of your important help which has benefited not only young men and women, but the entire community of Miramar.
Dear fellow Rotarians, As you may know, the 2017-18 nominating committee for President of Rotary International has selected a new President-elect to replace the late Sam Owori. The selection process took place on 8 August, and our new president-elect will be confirmed by me on 1 September if there are no challenges to the selection. Please join me in congratulating Barry Rassin, of the Rotary Club of East Nassau, Bahamas.
He is a consultant to the Doctors Hospital Health System in the Bahamas. He has served as chair of Project Read Bahamas, chair of the Quality Council of the Bahamas, and vice chair of Safe Bahamas. Barry has been a dedicated Rotarian for 37 years, and we served together on the Board of Directors in 2006/08.
His vision for Rotary’s future is motivating and inspiring, and I have no doubt that he will lead us well in the 2018-19 Rotary year.
Although we did not get the opportunity to see Sam take on the role of president, his spirit and memory live on through our commitment to serving our local and global communities.

Service Awards
ACSO Committee has been advised that the Department of Premier and Cabinet have once again provided $14,000 towards the 2017 Awards.
How to enter information is now available and can be sourced from Rotary Horizons or request by email from Les Dennis (lesdennis@bigpond.com) Team Leader Community Services and District 9500 ACSO Representative.
Nominations will be received up to the 31st August 2017. Last year a number of Rotary Clubs were successful. Awards will be presented at a lunch event at the Glenelg Golf Club on Sunday 22nd October 2017.
