Cathy Murphy is the Executive Director of The Mary Potter Foundation and has been in the role for eight years. She has been in the charity sector since 1997 when she recognised that she wanted to build a career that would have a positive impact on people’s lives.
The Mary Potter Hospice holds a special place in the hearts of many people in our community. With a rich history linked to the Venerable Mary Potter and the Sisters of the Little Company of Mary, today the Hospice team embraces modern palliative care practices with a truly holistic approach and a focus on individual needs. Last week’s speaker, Cathy Murphy spoke about the important role the Hospice and palliative care plays in helping people to live well at the end of their lives. She explained hospice is an “ethos” of care and is about the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of patients and their families. Their aim is to make each day as special s it can be for patients and they provide music therapy, massage therapy, skin therapy, pet therapy, creative arts and biographical services. 40% of their patients are 60 years or younger.
Remember no meeting this Thursday as all members are encouraged to join others and participate in “Walk a Mile in My Boots” meeting at 7am between the registration tent and coffee van and afterwards at Alphonso’s in Hutt Street for breakfast/coffee with members of the Eastwood Rotary Club.
One way our club can grow and evolve is by learning from others, including other rotary clubs. Adelaide Light is open to new ideas and varying ways of running our meetings so I encourage members to visit other Rotary Clubs and discuss your observations to us at Club Planning meetings. It is also a great way of making new friends and learning about rotary Projects.
Quote for the week:
“If someone offers you an amazing opportunity but you are not sure you can do it, say yes – then learn how to do it later”
The Adelaide Rotary Club are organizing a wine lunch at the Caledonian Hotel North Adelaide.

2. RC Adelaide South - Lunch invitation
RC Adelaide South invite us to join them for a luncheon meeting, Friday, 18th August, 2017, at the Adelaide Royal Coach Hotel.
The occasion is a visit by Valerie Browning, Principal of the Ethiopian Afar Pastoralists Development Association the International NGO responsible for construction and administrative matters relating to our Water Capture and Storage Project in Ethiopia.
The Birikat Water Capture and Storage Project resulted from an informal meeting early 2011, between RC Adelaide South members and Valerie about a need for accessible domestic water for villagers in her adopted country.
With contributions and assistance from others, Adelaide South has now funded three Birikats in the Afar Region of Ethiopia.
As an interested contributor to this very successful project, members of the Rotary Club of Adelaide South would welcome your attendance on this special occasion.
If you would like to attend, please advise by Wednesday, 16th August, 2017, to assist with catering.
For the benefit of members, we will aim to give the Duty Roster a few weeks ahead - see below.

Rotary Club of Adelaide Light Mission Statement
To be recognised as the Service Club of Choice in the Eastern Precinct of Adelaide because we are a Friendly Breakfast Club that appeals to a broad range of busy people who want to make a difference to local and international communities.
While walking along the sidewalk in front of his church, our minister heard the intoning of a prayer that nearly made his collar wilt.
Apparently, his 5-year-old son and his playmates had found a dead robin.
Feeling that proper burial should be performed, they had secured a small box and cotton batting, then dug a hole and made ready for the disposal of the deceased.
The minister's son was chosen to say the appropriate prayers and with sonorous dignity intoned his version of what he thought his Father always said: "Glory be unto the Faaaather, and unto the Sonnn .. and into the hole he gooooes."
