Last week our guest speakers were Chris Henry and Geoff Vogt who spoke about The Industry Leaders Fund. Chris is the Adelaide-based General Manager of Austofix, a medical technology company that manufactures bone replacement components for use by Orthopaedic surgeons. He recently received a grant from the Industry Leaders Fund - operated by a group of industry leaders to help those who show the potential and dedication to achieve their aims. Geoff Vogt, CEO of ILF, said for South Australia to continue its growth as a technology exporter, the ILF must help to provide our technology leaders with the skills and confidence to play on a global stage. The ILF do this by fast tracking participants development and capabilities and help them manage business complexities in a competitive global market. Ultimately, these grants benefit the businesses - and South Australia - by increasing jobs in specialist areas. Through its previous awardee's business, the ILF has created an additional 44 jobs in SA, and managed to do it by spending around $9K per job instead of the usual $46K per job generation necessary by other businesses. An excellent result.
Chris talked about the benefits that being awarded the grant will achieve as it is being directed into his attending an an eight day training session entitled High Performance People Skills for Leaders Program at the London Business School.
Chris passed around beautifully crafted orthopaedic components that are fashioned to hold bones together while healing; these components (in their own way) had a beauty of curve and craftsmanship that belied the often brutal reality of affixing them to people's joints to create useful limbs again. Austofix worked on one particularly special bone screw for two years to get the design, of affixing quality (so that it stayed in place) and size that would make it useful in many of their components - and of course the biotechnical testing required. With the creation of newly designed devices over the last few years and a new business model, Austofix doubled its turnover last year. Austofix works closely with surgeons and doctors to devise better componentry and sales are booming to markets such as China, Dubai etc- places where its a relatively quick direct plane ride to send their product when required. 60% of its products head towards China (in one particular province) and Austofix will be expanding to two nearby provinces which would cover a population's injuries of around 100 million people. New markets are being sought in Poland and Europe. Chris said Austofix must continue innovating and he is continually looking for highly skilled engineers so they can tap into high end manufacturing. An excellent talk by both our guests.
Next week's speaker is Peter Jolly "Flying everything in sight". We look forward to seeing you at the meeting.
As Acting President I forgot at the meeting to wish Andrew Black (5 Feb) and Fred Field (9 Feb) a Happy Birthday! Hope you both had excellent birthday celebrations (as did I on 7 Feb)!

A few old couples used to get together to talk about life and to have a good time. One day one of the men, Harry, started talking about this fantastic restaurant he went to the other night with his wife.
“Really?”, one of the men said, what’s it called?
After thinking for a few seconds the Harry said, “what are those good smelling flowers called again?” “Do you mean a rose? the first man questioned. “Yes that’s it,” he exclaimed.
Looking over at his wife he said, “Rose what’s that restaurant we went to the other night?”
Smith goes to see his supervisor in the front office. “Boss,” he says, “we’re doing some heavy house-cleaning at home tomorrow, and my wife needs me to help with the attic and the garage, moving and hauling stuff.”
“We’re short-handed, Smith” the boss replies. “I can’t give you the day off.”
“Thanks, boss,” says Smith “I knew I could count on you!”
