This week is a special meeting – the 1500th meeting of the Club. Please join us for a special celebration. And we have a fascinating guest speaker Dr John Crowhurst who will tell us a largely untold story about the aftermath of Pearl Harbour.
Last week, our speaker was Emil Prelgauskas who spoke about electric cars and his vision for how things are likely to develop over the next 10-20 years. He started with the development of the Tesla electric car, largely funded by Elon Musk (Wikipedia says: South African-born Canadian-American business magnate, engineer, inventor and investor, founder of PayPal, net worth $US13B). Unlike other electric cars, Tesla started at the top end of the market to establish itself and is working its way down – their next vehicle promises to be an SUV. The batteries, which take 8 hours to recharge in a conventional powerpoint, can now get the car about 500km. And they are ready to be driverless, once the legislators approve (cameras that read road signs, speed signs, traffic lights, etc.) The Tesla can connect to the internet each night, so can know any road changes, road works, speed traps, etc. for the next day. It is even feasible to charge your car while at work and then use the car battery to power the house overnight, with the petrol engine starting to recharge the battery if it needs to! The whole electricity redistribution system is about to change. There were many provocative and unusual ideas here and we thank Emil for opening our minds to future possibilities, so we can be ready for them.
Lock your doors and windows! – Richard apologised for leaving early the previous week, but it was because his daughter’s family house had been broken into while they were asleep inside, with phone, wallet and two cars being stolen. A very unsettling experience! All is well.

5. Movie Day - The Rotary Club of Adelaide West
Special screening of the movie “ROOM” on Sunday 31 January 2016 – 12noon for 1:00pm – to raise funds for their Books for Babies project.

10. Centurion Club Reminder
We have now passed the half way mark of the Rotary year. This has been a time when many Rotarians renew their Centurion Club donation - at least $100 per year to the Rotary Foundation -which is tax deductible. Contributions also count towards a Paul Harris Fellow and your Club's Annual Programs Fund giving total for the Rotary Foundation.
Rotarians can make individual donations or alternatively Clubs may make donations on behalf of members and others who can be presented with a PHF in recognition of their special service.
PLEASE ENSURE THAT ALL DONATIONS ARE LISTED ON THE APPROPRIATE DONOR FORM WHICH CAN BE FOUND ON THE D9500 WEBSITE:
11. End Polio Now Campaign
A reminder to Clubs that are intending to participate in the “End Polio Now” challenge by making a contribution of US$1500 to the End Polio Now campaign that to qualify as having completed the challenge and thus receive the Recognition Certificate a donation of US$1,500 (not AU$1,500).
While any amount donated will always be most welcomed, to qualify for the Recognition Certificate Australian Clubs will need to donate an amount of AU$2,115 which based on current exchange rates equates to US$1,500. Chairman: Meet/greet speaker for the meeting; introduce and thank speaker. Preparation:- find details about the speaker prior to the meeting.
Attendance: Set up reception table (attendance sheet; members list – re -payments; guest welcome sheet; money; wine raffle sheet); register member payments/ apologies/ guests.
Hosting: Set up name badges display; welcome all at the door; ensure speaker and guests are introduced to appropriate persons.
Furniture: Flags; banner display; raffle balls; collection boxes; Rotary theme banner; gong and hammer; lectern position before and returned after the meeting. Computer set up – Connect to projector. Switch on. Hold function key & press F5 twice.
Invocation: Recite Rotary or other invocation relating to Rotary and fellowship.
Bottles/cans: Collect bags of bottles/cans at meeting and take to recycle centre for refund, pass refund and empty bags to David Rowe at next meeting.
Members’ Corner: write for the Newsletter on a topic of your choice, particularly during the 3 weeks you appear here on the roster, but also anytime you have something to say.
Rotaract, Church, Bread roster: Roster is for the Sunday/Monday after the meeting date.
Rotaract: Meets alternate Mondays at 6pm (for a 630pm start) at the General Havelock Hotel in Hutt Street.
Church: Sundays, 5.30pm at Pilgrim Uniting Church, 12 Flinders St (Park via boom gate in Flinders St. from 5pm).
Bread: Sundays, meet outside Romeo's, North Adelaide at 4:45pm

A story told about Gandhi………
When Gandhi was studying law at the University College of London, there was a professor, whose last name was Peters, who felt animosity toward Gandhi, and because Gandhi never conceded to him in any disagreement, their "arguments" were very common.
One day, Mr Peters was having lunch at the dining room of the University and Gandhi came along with his tray and sat next to him. The professor, in his arrogance, said, "Mr Gandhi: you do not understand... A pig and a bird do not sit together to eat," to which Gandhi replied, "You do not worry professor, I'll fly away," and he went and sat at another table.
Mr Peters, enraged, decided to take revenge on Gandhi on the next test, but Gandhi responded brilliantly to all questions. Then, Mr Peters asked him the following question, "Mr Gandhi, if you are walking down the street and find a package, and within it there is a bag of wisdom and another bag with a lot of money, which one will you take?"
Without hesitating, Gandhi responded, "the one with the money, of course."
Mr Peters, smiling, said, "I, in your place, would have taken the wisdom, don't you think?"
"Each one takes what one doesn't have", responded Gandhi indifferently.
Mr Peters, already hysterical, wrote on the exam sheet the word "idiot" and gave it to Gandhi. Gandhi took the exam sheet and sat down. A few minutes later, Gandhi went to the professor and said, "Mr Peters, you signed the sheet but you did not give me the grade."
