NOTES FROM SPARK EVENT 11/5/20
Notes from Scott Burns: Our club hosted the Resilience in Paradise SPARK! event on November 5th. Caylee Burditt, current SB Rotaract President, and past Rotary Youth Exchange Participant (Bolivia), was the moderator. The four panelists discussed how the city had prepared for the fire with annual trainings, how quickly, with the high winds, the city was destroyed, yet the hospital patients were saved, what they have learned and how Paradise Rotary Club has continued to help the community. DISTRICT CONFERENCE NOTES

What's New Workshop: District Committee on Diversity and Inclusion, and RI's new Area of Focus on the Environment, endangered species, climate change and educating children about the environment.Getting the Word Out Workshop: have younger and older Rotarians team up to share ideas. BELL RINGING FOR THE SALVATION ARMY RED KETTLE CAMPAIGN

Four Saturdays: November 28, December 5, 12 and 19.
Shifts: 10am-12pm, 12-2pm, 2-4pm, 4-5pm.
Location: Paseo Nuevo (outside the former Nordstrom on Canon Perdido St.)
Bob McPhillips is asking for volunteers to sign up for a 1- or 2-hour time shift. Wear Rotary gear or holiday accessories (or both). Ring the bell. Thank donors for their gift. Extra points earned if you bring a dog, play music, or wear something silly.
You must wear a mask and practice social distancing.
BONUS: Each of the first 15 members that volunteer to stand the kettle will receive the gift of a new holiday mask as an appreciation for their voluntary service.

It's time to go for a walk with a small group of your Rotary friends! We'll be careful and practice social distancing. Each walk will be limited to the first 8 people who sign up, so there will be plenty of room for social distancing. You must RSVP with Judith in advance and be confirmed to participate. When you RSVP, you'll receive the directions regarding where to meet. Dogs welcome and encouraged!
Please bring a mask, some water, sun screen and a hat! Both walks have beautiful scenery. We'll be walking approximately 3 miles. Let's get out and enjoy the outdoors and some fellowship!

CLUB MEETING NOTES 11/4/20
Call to Order: President Eric called the meeting to order at 7:32 a.m. Frank Tabar gave the flag salute; Karen Kawaguchi gave the invocation; Diana Cecala provided the raffle that was won by Frank Tabar.
Guests: Tom Rhodes, Rick Wilson, Bety Zezulkova, Bill Boyd (member, RC of E-Club One World), Sandy Grasso Boyd, Lisa Burns, Marc McGinnes, speaker.
In Memoriam: Judith announced that former member, Jean Olsen, had died. She was Judith's mentor when they both worked for Girl Scouts.
Committee Reports:
Club Service: Diana W. said the November Happy Hour will be held on November 19. The October Yappy Hour was fun. She is working on something fun for the holidays. Judith will be leading two walks in November: one on Sunday, November 8 9:00 a.m. at the Ellwood Bluffs; the other on Saturday, November 28, 9:00 a.m. at Parma Park. Email Judith if you wish to participate. Judith also reminded people that, following the Foodbank raffle, they should send their checks marked “Foodbank” as soon as possible to the club’s Charitable Foundation. We raised $2,230 and need to get it to them in time for Thanksgiving.
Community Service: Luz Maria reported that, last Saturday, a group of members visited La Casa de la Raza to deliver 20 tablets for kids and 10 for administrative staff donated by Eric. They were impressed by the facility and programs. Dennis talked to staff about the possibility of mentoring or tutoring the children, which he will continue to pursue. He mentioned that La Casa sells tri-tip tortas on Fridays between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. from their front door as a fundraiser. He said one torta is enough for two people. Eric said, "Speak for yourself!" Joanne mentioned that Partners in Education also may have volunteer opportunities.
Vocational Service: Scott Burns reminded members that the SPARK! event was happening the next day, November 5th at 6:30 p.m. The topic is the fire in the town of Paradise one year ago.
Student Exchange Update from Bety: Bety, our Exchange Student from two years ago, said that everything had shut down in the Czech Republic because of the coronavirus. All the schools closed a month ago. Her family is healthy and they did not lose their jobs. She will be going straight to medical school when she graduates.
Marc McGinnes
Program: Kirk Greene introduced our speaker, Marc McGinnes, who is his neighbor. The conservation movement started long ago with John Muir and Teddy Roosevelt. However, on January 28, 1969, the oil spill in the Channel triggered the birth of the environmental movement. Marc graduated from U.C. Berkeley Law School in 1966. He had a job set up with Bechtel in San Francisco. He also went to Nancy in France to do post-graduate work where he honed his speaking skills. The Vietnam War was raging. On Christmas Eve 1968 astronauts were circling the moon looking for a landing spot, when Marc saw Earthrise – earth from outer space. It profoundly changed Marc’s thinking. He became aware that “that’s my home and my responsibility.” The oil in the Channel continued to spill. Marc was called by Congressman Pete McCloskey to suggest that Marc move to Santa Barbara to enter a new field of law and start the environmental movement.
The oil spill was caused by drilling without safety casings around the drill head. Peter McCloskey was invited to be co-chair of the Environmental Teach-In, which led to the start of Earth Day. The Santa Barbara Declaration of Environmental Rights was published on January 28, 1970 and Earth Day was introduced on April 22 that year. It led to the question of whose rights reign: private property or community benefit?
Marc taught environmental law to UCSB undergraduates who would go on to law school because UCSB does not have a school of law.
Marc mentioned a Life magazine article regarding Mars – Bringing a Dead World to Life. He said if we can’t preserve health and living conditions on this planet, what makes us think we could do it on Mars? Marc talked about gratitude: "when I arrived I took a breath; when I leave I’ll return that breath." I will be grateful in between for being an Earthling.
Marc met Pearl Chase whom he found to be intimidating.
When asked if we are at the point of no-return in regards to environmental problems, he said he doesn’t know. It is a time for humility. The climate is changing. We may not survive but we may flourish. It has a lot to do with how we feel about ourselves and the magic of the planet. We are Earthlings.
