Our International Service Committee is exploring an exciting opportunity to support a project with Natün, an organization that works alongside Maya communities in the Lake Atitlán region of Guatemala to strengthen Indigenous leadership, participation, rights and capacity.
Through community-led programs in education, nutrition and health, and economic development, Natün works with local leaders to develop culturally relevant solutions that support Indigenous autonomy and community well-being.
As part of exploring a potential Rotary partnership, a seven-day discovery trip is planned for February 27–March 7, 2027. Participants will visit Natün’s programs, meet local leaders and community partners, and learn firsthand about Indigenous-led development and the communities Natün serves.
The journey will also offer an opportunity to experience Guatemala’s rich culture, beautiful landscapes and the people who make this country so special.

Overdose deaths are continuing to rise in our community. The Rotary Club of Santa Barbara Sunrise in partnership with Rotary Action Group Addiction Prevention North America is doing something about it by equipping our community with the knowledge and tools necessary to help combat the opioid crisis and save lives. Participants will learn how to administer an effective treatment in reversing an opioid overdose. Attendees will receive a free kit. ($49 value). Advanced, early registration is required. Space is limited. Please help share this important advisory.
WHAT: The public is invited to learn how to administer a medicine that rapidly reverses an opioid overdose. This training, which will last for one hour, is an invaluable opportunity to be prepared to act swiftly and effectively in emergency situations. WHEN: Monthly from 6:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Advanced, early registration is required. Space is limited.

District Governor

Margarida Eidson is a member of the Rotary Club of Ventura East, joining in May of 2017. She served as Club President in 2020-2021 and again for the last Quarter of 2023.
Margarida served District 5240 as Youth Services Director in 2021-2022, as Assistant Governor in 2022-2023 and as Chief of Staff in 2023-2024. She was selected as the District Governor for 2026-2027.
Margarida is the president of Eidson Management, Inc., which provides bookkeeping, financial analysis, marketing, and human resource services to multiple clients. In addition, Margarida’s company manages the Poinsettia Pavilion, a non-profit event center in Ventura that hosts around 80 events monthly.
Margarida enjoys volunteering in her community, holding many different positions throughout the years. She lives in Camarillo, California and has four wonderful boys.

Andrea Light is inspired by the process of individuals coming together and making an impact on the broader community. The values and passions of her colleagues at the Santa Barbara Foundation and the Santa Barbara County community are Andrea’s greatest motivations to come to work every day and be a part of something bigger than herself.
During her tenure with the Foundation, Andrea has held roles in the Philanthropic Services Department and, currently, in the Finance Department. In her current role as Investments and Accounting Analyst, she focuses on the operational aspects of SBF’s investment portfolios and financial accounts, assisting with audit schedules, private market funds accounting, and account reconciliations.
In addition to her Foundation experience, Andrea has worked in institutional investments, media sales, and was a flight attendant. She served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Paraguay and holds a BA in Anthropology from Cal State Los Angeles.
Director of Donor Relations Jessica Sanchez says, “The road to effective philanthropy begins with a donor’s motivation. This reminded me that when you are inspired to give, you are often providing encouragement to other people who share passion for a cause, and this is what motivates me every day to help donors meet their charitable goals.”
Jessica is responsible for developing and strengthening relationships with donors and fund advisors, sharing best practices in philanthropic giving, strategically adding value to the donor experience through aligned giving opportunities, and facilitating meaningful engagement experiences for donors.
Prior to joining the Foundation, Jessica worked for Farmers Insurance as a customer service representative and as a tutor for Carney Educational Services. Working for Carney Educational Services, she assisted children in meeting academic and social needs. Jessica graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Global Studies and Chicano Studies and has received her Paralegal Certificate through the UCSB Extension Program. // Join us! The Peace Crane Project

Sue DiCicco Smith is an artist, author, and former Walt Disney Feature Animation artist. She founded the Peace Crane Project in 2012 to connect young people around the world through the shared art of origami. Sue is co-author, with Masahiro Sasaki, of The Complete Story of Sadako Sasaki.
