Rotary club provides $30,000 to upgrade PavilionSince the
Spring of 2011, a number of community partners have come together in an effort
to improve the TH&VS Pavilion located at Hollinger
Park in time for the City of Timmins’ 100th
Anniversary Celebration scheduled to take place throughout 2012. The partners
include the TH&VS Homecoming Committee, the City of Timmins
and the Timmins
- Porcupine Rotary Club, who took the lead as the major financial contributor
providing $30,000 towards the
enhancements of the project. In
addition, Timmins Overhead Doors and Timmins Building Supplies donated services
helping to reduce costs of the project
The
Pavilion was originally constructed by the TH&VS technical students in 2000
as a millennium project and so it was not surprising to see the TH&VS 2012
Homecoming Committee come on board to support the significant enhancements that
include roll up doors, refurbished gable ends, piers for speakers, addition of
suspension points for lighting, improved electrical service etc. This fall, the
current school administration, teachers and students will work at closing the
three remaining gable ends and refreshing the paint of the well used pavilion.
According
to Mayor Laughren, “Timmins is a very special place in which to
live, learn, grow up and grow old, in large part because so many of us work
together to strengthen and sustain the fabric of our community. By and large,
people and organizations from the City have demonstrated energy, enthusiasm,
generosity and passion for making a difference in the lives of others, and in
the overall quality of life enjoyed in our community. Though individual
fundraising, giving and volunteer efforts, many continue to find ways to
contribute to the community in which they live, work and play.”
The goal of
the revamped TH&VS Pavilion project is to give Timmins and the performing arts community a
place to call home and a venue suited for medium-scaled events, but most of
all, to show community pride and involvement.
The
initiative was spearheaded by Midnight Express a well known music promoter who
provided overall direction on the design of the enhancements for the TH&VS
Pavilion.
“Our
community is stronger as a direct result of our volunteers and our generous
corporate citizens” concluded Mayor Laughren. ![]() |

Gold Miners' Daughters Strike the motherload with the help of Rotary ClubROLLER DERBY: Timmins skaters win 2 Fresh 2 Furious TournamentBy The Daily PressPosted 22 minutes agoTORONTO — The Gold Miners' Daughters hit the mother lode at the 2 Fresh 2 Furious Tournament on Saturday. Despite having only two previous bouts under their belt, the Gold Miners' Daughters were the last skaters standing at the conclusion of the flat track roller derby event at Ted Reeve Arena. "We were the underdogs of the tournament," said Gold Miners' Daughters captain Amy Heffernan, who uses the track name Ames to Mame. "People were in absolute shock that this was our first tournament ever, they kept asking our coach, Jeff Latham (known on the track as Nick L. Bagg) 'What are you feeding these girls?'" In the championship game of 2 Fresh 2 Furious, the Gold Miners' Daughters skated over Toronto's D-VAS 67-24 in a hard-hitting affair. Despite the rather one-sided final score, the D-VAS did not surrender the trophy without a fight. "I just remember being on the line at the beginning of the bout and, after the whistle blew, two of their blockers hit and packed Ames up," said Rachel Matthews, who skates under the name Night Train Jane. "That was when the heat was on for me. We showed them we know how to hit too!" Nadia Riopel, known trackside as Nasty Nads, showed D-VAS the Gold Miners' Daughters have strong jamming abilities, as well, taking lead jammer status during the first jam. Assistant captain Lisa Tremblay, known as Kill'er Princess, followed up with some awesome jamming moves of her own. Both Timmins skaters impressed the crowd with their manoeuvres and speed — and made some new fans! The tournament featured 16 teams, with the Gold Miners' Daughters advancing after posting a record of five wins and one loss in round-robin play. The lone loss for the Gold Miners' Daughters, 38-30, came against Durham Region. Timmins fans interested in watching the championship game from 2 Fresh 2 Furious can do so by visiting YouTube and looking up GTAR derby. The trip to Toronto for the tournament was made possible by the support the Timmins roller derby girls received during the recent Rotary Ribfest, noted Gold Miners' Daughters president Yanick Tremblay.
That success, combined with Saturday's tournament victory, has given the Gold Miners' Daughters a lot of momentum. However, the group still faces a few challenges. "We came back with a golden trophy, but we are still struggling to find ourselves a permanent place to skate," Yanick Tremblay said. "With a growing membership of 23 women, we are anxious to keep skating." The daughters have been without a regular skating venue since the spring and are in need of a permanent home. "What we did this weekend was incredible," Latham said. "We were nothing short of amazing, but without a practice space, it will be very hard for us to maintain that status." In addition to a new home, the Gold Miners' Daughters are also seeking more sponsors. |

A little History about our club #2
Thanks to Helen for providing these facts to me for our newsletter. On May 09, 1977, Timmins skiier was honored. A special presentation of a lady's Rolex watch was made to Olympic gold medal winner Kathy Kreiner at a meeting of The Timmins Rotary Club. The watch was given to Kathy for her outstanding contribution to skiing in Canada. The meeting was held at the Senator Motor Hotel. On one from Timmins will ever forget the excitement of learning that Kathy had won Canada's only Olympic gold medal in 1976. Laurie Kreiner (also a skiier) accompanied Kathy. The presentation was presented by Rotary Club president Ben Bauman.
