Guest Speaker James Whittaker on Pier Cable Car Proposal

Last week’s presentation by Green Tech CEO James Whittaker is part of a continuing conversation about whether and how to build a new cruise ship pier in George Town that creates economic growth with minimal environmental impact. Mr. Whittaker’s idea is to have the ships anchor in the harbor and bring passengers to shore through a cable car system. He outlined specifications, costs and similar systems elsewhere.

The proposal, he says, would not require the large-scale dredging of the harbor that is included in current proposals being considered by Government. Mr. Whittaker estimates his proposal's price tag at around $170 million versus what he says will be a roughly $220 million cost of the current proposal once environmental mitigation steps are included.

Dictionary Distributions Wrap Up

Literacy Month distribution of illustrated dictionaries is wrapping up at schools, and Sunrise Rotarians have had a busy couple of weeks collecting smiles in exchange for the hundreds of reference books that have been passed out to the Year 5 students. At Sir John A. Cumber Primary School in West Bay, Principal Joseph Wallace and Minister Tara Rivers are joined by Literacy Director Su Mander, President Christine Matthews and Rotarian Faye Lippitt.
