What's In A Classification

Every person who joins a Rotary club is assigned a classification based on their profession or career. However there is no official list of classifications published by Rotary International - determining a classification list is left to individual clubs.

In thinking of a classification list for Sunrise I was reminded of the nursery rhyme which starts “tinker, tailor, soldier, sailor, rich man, poor man, beggar man, thief.” We may be lacking in some of those areas but the rhyme goes on “doctor, lawyer, Indian Chief” and we definitely have doctors and lawyers.

A Google search of this rhyme reveals a 2013 version which also mentions a jailer, captain, banker, teacher along with other professions such as cook, gardener, preacher, boxer, fisherman, plowman and pirate. Again we have some of these but if we were using this as a classification list we would have several vacant classifications.

On a serious note we do have a varied group of lawyers, accountants, bankers, teachers and medics along with a business scientist, an electrical producer, a water resource engineer and a realtor or two! We will consider applications from anyone who has the potential to be a quality Rotarian.

That said if anyone knows of a person who would make a good Rotarian in “welcoming services”, “polygraph services” or “cattle breeding” (all classifications at some clubs) please let us know!
