The Sergeant Speaks: “Happy Dollars” Have Arrived!

That’s sad news for the Sunrise Club and for all of us who were hoping to enjoying Sergeant Bryan’s radio-personality style of banter and repartee while assessing good-natured fines during the 2010-2011 Rotary year.

But the good news is that he hasn’t yet left us and he’s planning to revamp the Sunrise Sergeant’s arsenal of ways to raise funds for club expenses. Beginning this month, the usual fines will be augmented by “Happy Dollar” donations.

So...what’s a Happy Dollar?

Well, it’s a dollar that you can pay to let everyone know about something that makes you happy. At the beginning of each club meeting, as the Sergeant goes from table to table identifying guests, you’ll now also have a chance to offer up a Happy Dollar and announce a bit of good news.

As Sergeant Bryan notes, “It sets the tempo for the meeting as upbeat and very positive with clapping and laughter, and gets people to willfully contribute before we get into the heart of the meeting.”

He also predicts that some people will elect to toss in more than a single dollar, simply due to the level of news they are sharing.  Someone may toss in “$5 for their five grandkids coming to visit” or “$25 for the celebrating their 25 years of marriage.” But at $1, everyone feels empowered to share something, even if it’s simply “glad to still be alive and kicking.”
